To find out whether an on-stream membership promotion brought in additional sign-ups, compare it with a no-promotion condition running at comparable times. Randomly assign eligible viewers or preselected time blocks to promotion and control, log what viewers were actually shown, and compare new sign-ups per eligible viewer or measured exposure. YouTube Studio can show membership sign-ups and members gained, but a rise that happens after a promotion alone does not prove the promotion caused it.
Choose the outcome before you start
Frame the question as: “How many additional new channel memberships occurred because viewers were exposed to this specific promotion during the test window?” Use new sign-ups or members gained as the primary outcome. Keep related measures separate: cancellations, active members, total members, revenue, and gift membership redemptions are not interchangeable outcomes.
YouTube’s Memberships tab reports sign-ups and cancellations; YouTube Analytics reports members gained and lost over time, along with membership audience, revenue, and transaction information. Total members and active members answer different questions from new sign-ups. A member who has canceled may retain access through the remainder of a billing period, so a total or active-member count is not a substitute for the number of new joins during the test.

Pick a comparison that can support a causal claim
Randomized viewer-level holdout
If you can randomly show the promotion to some eligible viewers while withholding it from others at the same time, compare the groups’ sign-up rates. This is the clearest comparison because both groups experience the same broader period. It requires a way to assign and record exposure and to connect outcomes to the assigned group. Google’s A/B guidance describes variants shown to random samples at the same time: GA4 A/B test.
Randomized time-block rotation
A public 24/7 stream usually shows the same message to everyone watching at a given moment, so viewer-level assignment may not be practical. Instead, divide the schedule into comparable time blocks and randomly assign each block to promotion or control before the test begins. Rotate assignments across days and dayparts so, for example, all promotion blocks do not fall on high-traffic evenings while control blocks fall on quiet mornings.

This rotation applies general randomized-test principles to a continuous stream; it is not a built-in YouTube experiment feature. Viewers may return across blocks or see the promotion and join later during a control block. Record this spillover risk and decide in advance how to treat repeat viewers and delayed sign-ups. The sources available here do not establish a YouTube-specific attribution window for on-stream membership promotions.
Pre/post comparison
If you cannot run a control, compare periods of similar duration and, where possible, compare matching day-and-time blocks against a longer historical baseline. Treat the result as directional evidence, not proof. A before/after comparison does not control for changes in audience mix, seasonality, stream uptime, special events, or other channel activity. Set up the test and log what happened
- Write down the test question and primary measure. Specify the exact promotion, test dates and hours, the primary outcome (new sign-ups or members gained), and the denominator you will use: eligible viewers or measured exposure opportunities.
- Freeze the promotion. Save the exact copy or creative, its placement (on screen or spoken), frequency, and destination, such as the channel’s membership Join flow. YouTube supports channel
/joinlinks and an introductory video in the membership window; see YouTube’s membership guidance. Keep the offer and other stream conditions as consistent as possible across test and control. - Prespecify assignments. For viewer-level testing, document how eligible viewers are assigned. For a time-block test, make the randomized schedule before examining results and spread promotion and control blocks across comparable days and hours.
- Log scheduled and actual delivery. Record each block’s assignment, actual start and end time, what was displayed or spoken, how often it appeared, stream uptime, and any departure from the schedule. Also record concurrent events, other promotions, or interruptions that could influence sign-ups.
- Track exposure opportunities. Record eligible viewers or another defensible measure of how many chances viewers had to encounter the promotion. YouTube’s standard membership reports do not establish a native per-promotion exposure-to-membership conversion metric, so exposure logging may need to be maintained separately.
- Retrieve membership outcomes for the same periods. In YouTube Studio, use the Memberships tab and the Analytics membership audience and revenue views for the chosen custom periods. Inspect sign-ups, cancellations, members gained or lost, active and total members, and transaction reporting as relevant. Report which metrics you used rather than treating them as synonyms.
Calculate and report the difference
For each test arm, report the assigned and actual promotion exposure opportunities, the sign-up count, and the sign-up rate using the same denominator. A simple rate is sign-ups divided by eligible viewers or measured exposure opportunities. Then show the absolute difference in counts and rates between promotion and control, with the included dates and hours, stream uptime, and any major concurrent events.
Include uncertainty around the estimate when the data and analysis support it. The available sources do not establish a minimum viable sample size, test duration, or expected lift for a particular channel; those depend on its baseline sign-ups, audience, exposure logging, and schedule. Do not present a small or noisy difference as established impact.

Keep the distinction between association and incrementality clear. A sign-up that occurs during or after a promotion is coincident or attributed by timing; it is not necessarily incremental. Google describes incremental conversions as estimated by comparing treatment and control outcomes over the study duration, rather than simply counting conversions associated with a campaign.
Common measurement problems and fixes
- Sign-ups rose, but viewer traffic rose too: Raw totals can grow because the stream had more viewers or more uptime. Report a rate per eligible viewer or exposure opportunity alongside the count.
- Promotion blocks all ran at peak times: The comparison is confounded by daypart. Randomize or rotate assignments across comparable days and times.
- The message was not shown as scheduled: Use actual delivery logs, not the assignment alone, and document deviations and outages.
- Viewers encounter both conditions: Repeat viewers and delayed decisions can spill across blocks. Acknowledge the limitation and define how the analysis handles the overlap before interpreting results.
- Other changes coincide with the promotion: Special events, other calls to action, stream interruptions, and changes in audience composition can affect sign-ups. Log them; if there is no control, describe the comparison as directional.
- Active or total members do not match new joins: Use sign-ups or members gained for the primary outcome. Membership cancellations and remaining access can make active and total counts behave differently.
