Measure AI-search visibility, clicks, website visits, and conversions as separate stages—not as one “AI traffic” number. Use Google Search Console for Google Search exposure and clicks, Bing Webmaster Tools for citations in supported Microsoft AI answers, and web analytics for what visitors do after they arrive. Label every metric by platform and unit, then compare trends over aligned dates and dimensions.
Build a measurement view around four distinct stages
A useful report follows the path from exposure to an on-site outcome, while keeping each platform’s metric separate.
| Stage | Metric and source | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search exposure | Impressions in Search Console’s generative AI Search performance report | Whether a page appeared in Google’s generative AI features on Search, and how that exposure changes over time. | An impression is not a visit, click, or conversion. AI features are also included in the overall Search Console Web search type. Google’s report announcement |
| Google Discover exposure | Impressions in Search Console’s generative AI performance report for Discover | Whether a link was seen in a generative AI feature in Discover, subject to the report’s visibility definition. | It is not a Search impression or a site visit. Dates use Pacific Time, and Search Labs experiments are excluded. Google’s report announcement |
| Microsoft AI citations | Citations, cited pages, sampled grounding queries, and trends in Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Whether content is cited in supported Microsoft AI answer experiences and which pages or sampled topics are associated with citations. | Citation counts do not show ranking, placement, authority, the role of a page in a specific answer, or visits caused by a citation. Microsoft’s AI Performance report guidance |
| Search clicks | Clicks and click-through rate (CTR) in Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools Search Performance | Whether users clicked through from the measured search surfaces. | A click is not the same unit as an Analytics session. Bing Search Performance covers multiple Bing surfaces. Bing Search Performance guidance |
| Visits and outcomes | Sessions, engagement, landing pages, and configured key events or conversions in web analytics | What visitors did on the site and whether measured visits led to a defined outcome. | Analytics depends on correct tagging and configuration; its source attribution cannot identify every AI-answer exposure that may have preceded a visit. Google Analytics and Search Console integration guidance |
These measures describe different things. Do not add impressions, citations, clicks, sessions, or conversions together or label exposure counts as “AI traffic.”

Measure Google Search visibility and clicks in Search Console
Google’s dedicated generative AI Search performance view reports impressions for generative AI features on Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. It can show pages, countries, devices for Search results, and dates. Google’s announcement says the Search and Discover generative AI reports were announced on June 3, 2026, and the Search reporting rollout reached websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. These are product availability milestones, not traffic or performance benchmarks. Google’s report announcement

Use the dedicated view to track generative AI Search exposure. Use the broader Search Console Performance report to inspect Search clicks, impressions, CTR, and queries; its Web search type includes AI features. Keep the report name and metric visible in charts so a Web total is not mistaken for a generative-AI-only total.
Keep Discover’s generative AI report separate
Google’s Discover report measures a link seen in a generative AI feature in Discover when the link has been scrolled into view. The report provides pages, countries, and dates. Its dates use Pacific Time, and it excludes Search Labs experiments. Treat its impressions as Discover exposure—not as Google Search exposure, a click, or a session. Google’s report announcement

Track Microsoft AI citations in Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report covers citations of publisher content across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and selected partner experiences. It includes total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends. Microsoft’s AI Performance report guidance

A citation count does not establish how high or prominently a page appeared, whether it was authoritative, or what role it played in a particular answer. Grounding queries are sampled, not a complete query log. For Bing search traffic and search-performance measures, use Bing Search Performance separately; that report includes clicks from surfaces such as Web search, chat responses, news answers, image results, and knowledge panels. Use web analytics for visits and business outcomes
Search Console describes activity before a person arrives from Google Search—such as impressions, clicks, and queries. Analytics describes visitor interactions on the site, including traffic sources, engagement, and configured actions. In practical terms, use Search Console for Google Search performance and Analytics for sessions, engagement, and key events or conversions. Google’s integration documentation
Choose the on-site outcome before interpreting a traffic change. For example, a rise in organic sessions may matter differently if the goal is a lead form submission, a purchase, or deeper engagement. Make sure the relevant key event or conversion is configured and that landing-page and source/medium reporting is usable; analytics cannot report an outcome that has not been measured.

Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions are calculated differently, so exact agreement is not expected. - Keep each chart’s unit explicit: impressions, citations, clicks, sessions, or conversions.
- Compare direction and timing of changes rather than forcing unlike totals to match.
- When a trend shifts, check affected pages and queries, Analytics source/medium and landing-page setup, date and timezone alignment, and any changes to tagging or canonicalization.
- Put each platform’s definition and limitations beside the chart, especially when an impression or citation is being discussed alongside traffic.
For Google, Search Console is the pre-arrival Search source and Analytics is the on-site behavior source. For Microsoft, report AI Performance citations separately from Bing Search Performance traffic. The distinction makes it possible to see whether exposure, click-through, or post-arrival outcomes changed without assuming one caused another.

What the reports do—and do not—establish
These platform reports can help identify visibility trends, cited URLs, sampled query themes, search clicks, and on-site outcomes. They do not provide a single, complete measure of “AI visibility” or prove that a particular citation generated a particular visit. Keep conclusions within the unit and coverage each report actually provides.
Google’s official guidance also says special AI-specific files or markup are not required to appear in its Search AI features: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.” Google Search Central guidance on AI features
