There is no simple official XRP Ledger (XRPL) statistic that gives the percentage of DEX activity coming from order books versus automated market maker (AMM) pools. XRPL can route a trade through an order book, an AMM, or both, so a credible comparison requires a defined asset universe, time window, denominator, and rule for mixed executions. For historical share, measure validated transaction outcomes—not current pool balances or open-offer depth.
Why order-book share and AMM share are not simple opposites
The XRPL decentralized exchange combines a native Offer-based central limit order book with AMM liquidity. XRPL’s documentation explains that offers and payments are optimized to determine whether swapping in a pool, through order books, or through both provides the best rate. As a result, one transaction may draw liquidity from more than one source; a binary label can conceal that mixed routing.
An AMM and an order book are also distinct liquidity surfaces for an asset pair. XRPL documentation allows up to one AMM for a given pair, while the order book contains offers. For issued assets, identify each asset by both its currency code and issuer; a currency code alone may not uniquely identify it.

There is no protocol-prescribed denominator for this comparison. State exactly what the percentage measures, because different denominators answer different questions.

- Share by execution count: the proportion of counted executions classified as order-book-only, AMM-only, or mixed. This describes how often executions occur, not their size.
- Share by executed value: the proportion of total realized value attributed to each source. Choose and disclose a numeraire and explain how you convert trades in different assets into it.
Report execution count and executed value separately when possible. Publish the start and end ledger or UTC time range, whether the data is from mainnet or testnet, the included asset pairs, and any exclusions. A result for selected pairs should not be presented as network-wide share.
How to calculate realized activity
- Define the universe. Specify the ledger range, network, included pairs, and whether you are measuring all XRPL DEX trades or a selected subset. For issued currencies, record currency and issuer.
- Choose the denominator. Decide whether share is based on execution count, executed value in a named numeraire, or another explicit measure. Document any conversion method used for value-based comparisons.
- Identify executed exchanges. Use validated transaction metadata and ledger results to identify what actually executed. Do not treat a pool’s current reserves or the offers currently visible in a book as historical trading volume.
- Classify liquidity sources. Keep three categories—order-book only, AMM only, and mixed—or allocate mixed executions across the sources under a stated, reproducible rule. Do not silently force a mixed execution into one category.
- Validate and disclose. Base retrospective results on validated ledgers and publish the data source, ledger range, asset universe, denominator, classification rules, allocation method, and exclusions.
What XRPL data methods can and cannot tell you
The amm_info API method retrieves an AMM pool’s state, including at a specified ledger, and indicates whether the result is validated. It is useful for inspecting pool state, but a reserve snapshot is not a record of the period’s executed volume.

book_offers and book_changes provide order-book information: offers in a book and changes to books, respectively. These methods help inspect available liquidity and book changes, but open offers or current depth alone do not establish how much trading executed through the book during a chosen period.

For the comparison itself, use validated transactions and their outcomes. XRPL ledgers close approximately every 3–5 seconds, and tentative execution calculations can differ from final results when transactions affect the same book within one ledger. A retrospective figure should therefore be calculated from final validated data, not tentative results.

How to report the result without overstating it
- Give the percentage together with its denominator, time range, asset universe, and network.
- Show execution count and executed value as distinct measures rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.
- Include a mixed category or state the allocation rule used for mixed executions.
- Distinguish realized activity from pool reserves, open offers, and other liquidity snapshots.
- Call a selected-pair result a selected-pair result, not a network-wide statistic.
The official XRPL documentation describes exchange mechanics and data-access methods, but it does not establish a current XRPL-wide order-book-versus-AMM percentage or a canonical calculation standard. A percentage is meaningful only when its dataset and method are reproducible.
