To match a laptop charger, identify your exact laptop model and check its official manual or original adapter label for the supported charging port, connector, voltage, current, and wattage. A plug that fits—or a charger with a high wattage rating—does not by itself prove compatibility.
Start with the exact laptop model
Find the model name or number on the laptop’s label, in its system information, or in your manufacturer account. Use that identifier to locate the official manual or support page. Charger requirements can differ between models in the same product family, so do not rely on the brand or screen size alone.
If you still have the original adapter, record the output ratings printed on its label: voltage (V), current (A), and wattage (W). For a fixed output rating, watts equal volts multiplied by amps. Treat the original adapter as a useful reference, but check the laptop’s model-specific documentation before buying a replacement. Dell specifically recommends checking the computer manual for wattage and connector information (Dell adapter guidance).

USB-C
USB-C describes the connector shape, not necessarily the port’s charging capability. Confirm that the specific port supports power input and that the laptop and charger support a compatible USB Power Delivery (USB PD) profile. Do not assume a USB-C data port can charge the laptop.

Apple says a Mac that uses USB-C for charging can use a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB PD. Apple recommends meeting at least the model’s minimum recommended wattage for the best charging experience, and says third-party equipment should meet applicable regulations and safety standards (Apple: Use a power adapter with your Mac). That guidance applies to Macs with USB-C charging; it is not a universal rule for every laptop.
Barrel and proprietary connectors
For a barrel plug or proprietary connector, match the connector and electrical specifications specified for your exact model. A plug that appears to fit may have the wrong dimensions or electrical characteristics. Do not force it: Dell warns that incorrect insertion can bend or break pins. Some systems also identify the adapter electronically, so an unrecognized adapter may cause charging problems or reduced performance (Dell adapter guidance).

Match the charger’s output to the laptop’s requirements
Compare the adapter’s output with the model’s official requirements. For USB-C, the charger must provide an output profile the laptop accepts, with sufficient power for the intended use. A lower-power charger may charge slowly, fail to keep up while the laptop is under load, or cause the system to reduce performance. A higher wattage number alone does not establish compatibility; the port, protocol, voltage profile, and model requirements still matter.

Manufacturer specifications are model-specific. For example, Lenovo’s ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 guide specifies USB-C power input of at least 20 V and 2.25 A, and says that port is not designed as the primary power input. Lenovo’s Legion 5 Pro 16 guide lists tested USB-C charger ratings for its specified port of 20 V at 3.25 A, 4.75 A, 5 A, or 6.75 A, and cautions that USB-C power may not provide full performance while the laptop is operating. Neither model’s figures should be applied to other laptops.

Check the cable as well as the adapter
A compatible power brick can still be unusable if it lacks the cable or connector your laptop needs. Check whether the replacement includes a cable and whether your laptop connects by USB-C, USB-C-to-MagSafe, or another arrangement. Apple’s Mac guidance lists adapter and cable combinations by model family (Apple: Use a power adapter with your Mac).

Use an undamaged charger intended for the laptop’s requirements. Lenovo advises choosing a safety-approved or certified USB-C charger; Dell warns that a damaged adapter cable with exposed conductors can cause electric shock. Do not use a frayed cable or one with exposed wiring. When buying, check the seller’s model-compatibility information, return terms, and whether the adapter will be recognized by the laptop.

HP’s support guidance likewise points users to the supplied or a compatible HP adapter and matching replacement voltage and wattage. Because charger requirements vary by model, consult the current manual for your exact HP laptop rather than applying a general HP-wide rating.

Use this compatibility check before connecting
- Identify the exact laptop model. Read the product label, system information, or manufacturer account.
- Find the official requirements. Check the model’s manual or support page for the charging port, connector, and accepted input ratings.
- Read the adapter label. Compare its output voltage, current, and wattage with the laptop’s requirements. For USB-C, verify USB PD support and a suitable profile.
- Verify the cable and plug. Confirm the required cable type and connector; never force a connector into place.
- Check safety and condition. Prefer safety-approved equipment and reject damaged cables or adapters.
- Connect and confirm operation. Check that the laptop indicates charging and behaves normally. On Dell systems, adapter status can be checked in BIOS; an “Unknown” status can be associated with charging failure or reduced performance (Dell adapter guidance).
If the laptop does not charge normally
- The connector does not fit easily: Stop. Recheck the exact connector and model compatibility rather than forcing it.
- A USB-C charger connects but does not charge: Confirm that the laptop port accepts power input and that the charger supports USB PD at an output profile the laptop accepts.
- The laptop charges only when asleep or powered off: The adapter may not supply enough power for use while the system is running. Check the model’s minimum input requirements and the charger’s output ratings.
- The system reports an unknown adapter or performance drops: Check the manufacturer’s instructions for adapter identification and verify that the replacement is recognized and suitable for the model.
- The cable is frayed or exposed: Disconnect it and replace it; do not continue using damaged power equipment.
