Short answer: you cannot make IMGKit universally pixel-identical to Chrome or another modern browser with one option. IMGKit sends your HTML to wkhtmltoimage, which uses an older WebKit rendering path. To make results match as closely as possible, standardize the renderer and runtime, use the same final HTML and assets, set the viewport and crop explicitly, wait for JavaScript deterministically, verify fonts, then tune zoom and scaling. If exact browser fidelity is mandatory, render with the same browser engine and version as the target.
Why IMGKit differs from a browser
IMGKit is a Python wrapper; it does not draw the image itself. The underlying wkhtmltoimage executable parses the page and paints it with WebKit. Chrome, Firefox and Safari use different engines, font rasterizers, CSS implementations and JavaScript runtimes. Identical source HTML therefore can produce different line breaks, element positions, antialiasing and image dimensions.
The documented controls can make the environment repeatable, but they do not promise universal pixel-perfect equivalence. Decide first whether you need matching geometry (positions, sizes and wrapping) or identical pixels. The latter generally requires using the same browser engine, version and rendering mode as the reference capture, followed by an explicit visual tolerance for unavoidable raster differences.
Control the renderer before changing CSS
Record the executable and environment
Keep a capture manifest with the IMGKit package version, absolute wkhtmltoimage path and version, operating-system or container image, installed fonts and all relevant options. IMGKit can select a binary explicitly:

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
config = imgkit.config(wkhtmltoimage="/absolute/path/to/wkhtmltoimage")
Two machines with different binaries or fonts are not the same renderer. Check the selected executable with its own help output and version command; builds can expose different options and behave differently.
Use the same final inputs
Compare the browser and IMGKit against the same post-template HTML and CSS, not two independently generated versions. Confirm the base URL for relative links, authentication, cookies, request headers, images, web fonts and any extra stylesheets. For local files, review the binary’s local-file access policy and allow only the directories that contain required resources. In IMGKit, pass stylesheets explicitly when they are not already linked and resolvable.
Align viewport, crop and scale
Viewport width determines how CSS lays out the page; capture bounds determine which part of that layout is written to the image. Treat them as separate variables.
| What to align | Typical control | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Layout viewport | --viewport-size |
Sets the CSS viewport used for wrapping and responsive breakpoints. |
| Screen width | IMGKit image settings | Controls the rendering surface used by the utility. |
| Crop rectangle | Image width and height options | Defines the captured rectangle, independent of page layout. |
| Scale | zoom and smart-shrinking behavior |
Changes apparent size after layout; tune only after geometry matches. |
Start with the browser’s CSS viewport, for example 1280x800, and capture the same width and height in both systems. Do not compensate for a wrong viewport by randomly changing zoom: that can make text look the right size while leaving responsive wrapping wrong.

Make JavaScript readiness deterministic
Enable JavaScript when the page requires it, but do not assume a fixed sleep proves that the page is ready. wkhtmltoimage documents a JavaScript delay, a window-status wait and debugging output. Prefer an application-level readiness signal, such as setting window.status = 'ready' after data, fonts and images have loaded, and configure IMGKit to wait for that status. A fixed delay is a fallback; network speed and workload vary.
Animations can change the captured frame. Disable them in a capture stylesheet or wait until the animation reaches a known state. If a script never sets the expected status, the process can wait indefinitely, so define a timeout in your surrounding job system.
A repeatable Python IMGKit configuration
This is a starting point, not a universal preset. Replace the binary path and readiness strategy for your deployment:
import imgkit
options = {
"format": "png",
"encoding": "UTF-8",
"enable-javascript": None,
"javascript-delay": "500", # Use only when a fixed delay is acceptable.
"viewport-size": "1280x800",
"zoom": "1",
}
config = imgkit.config(
wkhtmltoimage="/absolute/path/to/wkhtmltoimage"
)
imgkit.from_file(
"page.html",
"output.png",
options=options,
config=config,
)
For a string, use imgkit.from_string(html, output, ...); for a URL, use imgkit.from_url(url, output, ...). Keep the exact HTML, CSS files, options and environment manifest with each comparison image. IMGKit passes supported options to the underlying utility, so verify names and effects with the installed binary’s help.

Fonts, CSS and assets: the usual hidden causes
Fonts
A missing web font silently falling back to another face changes glyph widths, line breaks and every element below the changed line. Install the intended fonts in the capture environment, verify that the renderer can access them, and wait for font loading before signaling readiness. Compare a diagnostic page that prints the chosen font family and several long text lines.
Stylesheets and media
Make stylesheet inputs explicit and check for failed requests. Print-media settings can change CSS rules in browser workflows; the wkhtmltoimage settings documentation notes that its print-media option has no effect for image output, so do not rely on it to switch the image renderer to print CSS.
Images and local files
Inspect logs for 404 responses, blocked local files and failed cross-origin requests. Allow only the required local paths. A missing image can alter intrinsic dimensions and layout, so fix resource loading before tuning scale.
Debug in a controlled sequence
- Static baseline: capture a small local page with local CSS, a known font and no asynchronous JavaScript.
- Verify logs: enable JavaScript debugging where needed and confirm stylesheets, images, fonts and scripts load successfully.
- Match geometry: set identical viewport width and height, then compare line wraps, bounding boxes and clipping.
- Add complexity gradually: reintroduce external assets and dynamic behavior one group at a time.
- Tune typography: after fonts are confirmed, test minimum font size and related text settings.
- Tune scale: change one of zoom or smart-shrinking at a time and preserve each configuration.
- Compare raster output: use the same image format and dimensions; judge antialiasing and subpixel differences only after layout matches.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “No executable exists” or binary not found | IMGKit cannot locate wkhtmltoimage. |
Install the utility, use its absolute path in imgkit.config, and confirm executable permissions. |
| Conversion exits with an error or segmentation fault | Utility/build or page-specific failure. | Run the underlying wkhtmltoimage command directly to read its actual error; test with a minimal page and check the build’s help. |
| Blank or partially styled image | Blocked local files, failed network requests or an incorrect base URL. | Inspect resource logs, correct URL resolution and allow only necessary local paths. |
| Dynamic content missing | JavaScript disabled or capture occurs before completion. | Enable JavaScript and use a readiness signal; use a delay only as a measured fallback. |
| Text wraps differently | Viewport, font, zoom or minimum-font settings differ. | Match viewport first, then verify installed fonts, then test scaling. |
| Works locally but fails headlessly | Display-server requirements differ. | On systems that need one, run under Xvfb; treat it as environment compatibility, not a visual-matching switch. |
| Every build looks slightly different | Different utility versions, OS libraries or fonts. | Pin the container/runtime and keep a capture manifest with every artifact. |
When to keep IMGKit and when to change engines
Keep IMGKit when its WebKit output is compatible with your existing pipeline, its runtime can be reproduced, and the remaining variance is within your acceptance tolerance. Its documented viewport, resource, JavaScript and scaling controls are useful for deterministic legacy workflows.

FAQ
Can IMGKit use the exact CSS viewport from Chrome?
Yes, set the documented viewport option to the browser’s CSS width and height, then align the output crop separately. This improves layout comparability but does not change the rendering engine.
Is a 500-millisecond delay enough for every page?
No. It is only a time-based wait. A deterministic application readiness signal is more reliable when page work varies.
Why should geometry be checked before antialiasing?
Different engines can rasterize otherwise identical shapes differently. If line wraps or positions are wrong, pixel-level comparisons cannot identify the real cause.
