The first run writes the expected image; subsequent runs wait for two identical screenshots and compare the result with that baseline.
Use the screenshot assertion that matches your scope
Playwright provides two related assertions:
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot()captures the page.expect(locator).toHaveScreenshot()captures one element or component.
Page assertions are useful for a route-level visual contract. Locator assertions produce smaller, more focused snapshots and usually make failures easier to diagnose. Both assertions wait until consecutive screenshots are identical before comparing, which avoids taking the reference or actual image while the page is still settling. See the visual comparisons guide, page assertion API, and locator assertion API.
Minimal page test
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Component-focused test
test('checkout summary', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/checkout');
const summary = page.getByTestId('order-summary');
await expect(summary).toHaveScreenshot('order-summary.png');
});
Name snapshots deliberately. Stable names make diffs searchable and prevent an unrelated page from silently becoming the expected image.
Create, review, and update baselines
- Run the test once in the environment you intend to use for visual testing. Playwright creates the reference screenshot when no snapshot exists.
- Open the generated image and confirm that it represents the intended UI state. Commit it with the test and configuration.
- Run the test again. Playwright captures the current page, waits for visual stability, and compares it with the committed reference.
- When a design change is intentional, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect every changed image, and commit the new files with the UI change.
An update command is not a generic failure fix. Treat changed snapshots as a code-review decision: determine whether the difference is an approved design change or a regression before replacing the baseline.

Make rendering deterministic before comparing pixels
A screenshot is the result of a browser, operating system, fonts, graphics stack, viewport, data, and page state. Differences in host OS, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode can change pixels even when application code is unchanged. Generate and compare snapshots in the same controlled environment. If your supported platforms intentionally render differently, configure separate Playwright projects and maintain platform-specific snapshots rather than treating one platform as universal.
Freeze the test inputs
- Use fixed test data and deterministic dates, numbers, and feature flags.
- Wait for the page’s meaningful content rather than an arbitrary short delay. A locator assertion’s stability wait does not make asynchronous application data deterministic.
- Use a fixed viewport and the same device scale policy for baseline and comparison runs.
- Install the same browser version and fonts in local, CI, and snapshot-generation environments.
Disable animation intentionally
Screenshot assertions disable animations by default: finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled for capture, then restored. Make that contract explicit when it matters:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png', {
animations: 'disabled'
});
If a test is meant to verify a particular transition frame, do not rely on timing. Set the application state directly and capture after the state is established.
Neutralize hover and focus state
Hover effects are part of the screenshot. Move the pointer to a neutral location or hover a harmless element before capture:
await page.mouse.move(0, 0);
await expect(page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Save' }))
.toHaveScreenshot('save-button.png');
Likewise, decide whether focus rings, open menus, selected tabs, and caret visibility belong in the contract. Set those states deliberately instead of inheriting whatever state the preceding action left behind.

Hide only irrelevant volatility
The stylePath option applies a stylesheet during capture. It can hide or alter volatile content, including content inside shadow DOM and frames. Use it for timestamps, rotating advertisements, or other content outside the assertion’s purpose; do not hide a region merely because it is difficult to stabilize.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account.png', {
stylePath: './visual-test.css'
});
/* visual-test.css */
[data-visual-volatile], .live-clock {
visibility: hidden !important;
}
Filtering a real product area can conceal a regression. Prefer fixing the data source or waiting for a known state when the content is part of what you need to test.
Choose scope and pixel scale deliberately
| Decision | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Whole page | You need a route-level contract covering layout, navigation, and page composition. | More unrelated changes can fail the test and produce larger diffs. |
| Locator | You are protecting a component or a critical region. | Changes outside the locator are not covered. |
scale: 'css' |
You want one image pixel per CSS pixel and compact, easier-to-review snapshots. | It does not represent every device pixel on a high-DPI display. |
scale: 'device' |
You need device-pixel fidelity for a rendering-sensitive check. | Images can be larger and more sensitive to device-scale differences. |
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('hero.png', {
scale: 'css'
});
Set tolerances based on the failure you are willing to accept
Playwright exposes three distinct comparison controls. The documented default for threshold is 0.2.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Option | Meaning | Typical question |
|---|---|---|
threshold |
Acceptable perceived color difference for an individual pixel in YIQ space. | How different may one pixel’s color be? |
maxDiffPixels |
Absolute number of pixels allowed to differ. | How many changed pixels are acceptable? |
maxDiffPixelRatio |
Allowed proportion of changed pixels. | What fraction of the image may differ? |
maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio are unset by default. They solve different problems: a color threshold can tolerate small anti-aliasing variation at many locations, while a pixel count or ratio limits the total area that may change. Choose the smallest allowance that accommodates known rendering noise.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('map.png', {
threshold: 0.15,
maxDiffPixels: 20
});
Do not respond to a failure by broadly increasing all three values. First inspect expected, actual, and diff images; then investigate environment drift, fonts, browser versions, animation, pointer state, and dynamic data. A tolerance should encode a known, acceptable source of noise, not hide an unexplained change.

A repeatable visual-test workflow
- Define the contract. Decide whether the page or a locator is the subject, which state is required, and which content is intentionally excluded.
- Pin the environment. Use a fixed Playwright browser revision, OS image, fonts, viewport, and scale. Keep baseline generation in the same CI image used for comparison.
- Arrange state. Seed data, wait for required network or UI conditions, set viewport and color scheme, and neutralize hover, focus, and animation.
- Capture. Call
toHaveScreenshot()with a stable name and only the options needed for this contract. - Review failures. Compare the diff with the expected and actual files. Classify the change as environment drift, unstable setup, an application bug, or an intentional design change.
- Update intentionally. Use
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsonly for approved appearance changes, then review the generated files in the same pull request.
Troubleshooting common mismatches
Every test fails after a CI image change
Cause: OS, fonts, browser revision, graphics behavior, or device scale changed.
Fix: Restore the pinned image or regenerate all snapshots in the new controlled environment. Do not mix baselines from different renderers in one project.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Only text or cards with live data differ
Cause: Data, time, random values, ads, or a rotating widget is not deterministic.
Fix: Seed the data and set a known clock or response. If the region is genuinely irrelevant, hide it with a narrowly scoped stylePath stylesheet.
Failures show a button in a different color or elevation
Cause: The pointer is hovering a different element, or focus state differs.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
Fix: Move the mouse to a neutral location and establish focus/blur state explicitly before capture.
The page is captured before content appears
Cause: The application is still loading data or fonts.
Fix: Wait for a meaningful locator, loading indicator to disappear, or network condition that represents readiness. Avoid arbitrary sleeps that merely slow the suite.
A tiny anti-aliasing difference causes failure
Cause: Renderer or font variation creates low-level color changes.
Fix: Align environments first. If the remaining variation is understood and harmless, adjust threshold minimally; use a pixel count or ratio only when the acceptable changed area is known.

FAQ
Should I snapshot a page or a locator?
Snapshot the page for a route-level contract and a locator for an isolated component or region whose boundaries you can define reliably.
When should a baseline change?
Change it only after confirming that the visual difference is an intentional, reviewed product change rather than a test or environment problem.
Can tolerances replace a stable test environment?
No. Tolerances can accommodate known rendering noise, but they cannot make different browsers, fonts, data, or UI states equivalent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright compare screenshots immediately?
No. The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive captures to be identical before comparing with the reference.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Where are snapshot files stored?
Playwright writes generated reference images alongside the test according to the project’s snapshot configuration; inspect the generated path in your test output and commit the intended files.
