For passive speakers, match an amplifier to the exact speaker model’s impedance guidance and recommended amplifier power; for streaming, separately confirm that the amplifier or an added streaming source supports your services and connections. “QED speakers” may mean Q Acoustics speakers connected with QED cable: Q Acoustics says, “We design, engineer and voice all Q Acoustics speakers with QED cables.” If your speakers are another brand, use their own manual and model specifications instead.
First, identify the speaker type and model
A QED cable is a connection between components; it does not determine which amplifier is compatible. Check the label or manual for the speaker’s brand and exact model, then determine whether it is passive or powered/active.
- Passive speakers need an external power amplifier to drive them.
- Powered or active speakers contain amplification. Do not buy a separate power amplifier for them unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically call for one.
Q Acoustics’ speaker FAQ explains the QED cable relationship, but it does not make QED the speaker brand. Start with the actual speaker maker’s specifications. Q Acoustics FAQ

Use the exact speaker model’s stated impedance and recommended amplifier power as your compatibility baseline. Then compare those figures with the amplifier’s specifications, checking that it can handle the load and that its power rating is stated at a comparable impedance. A product name or a cable brand alone is not enough to establish a suitable match.

- The 3060s delivers every nuance of an acoustic double bass or rumble of a cinematic explosion utilising a powerful 150watt amplifier partnered with a high performance 200mm driver
- The Q 3060s is among the slimmest subwoofers available and fits discretely into any home cinema system, Wall mountable with an optional, dedicated wall bracket or can be floor mounted using rubber feet or the spikes provided .
- Other than the main functions, all of the controls and connections are hidden behind a magnetic hatch with a down-facing port being for discrete cable runs
- Enclosure Type: infinite baffle, Bass Driver: 200mm (8 in), Frequency Response (+3 dB, -6 dB): 35–250 Hz, Internal Amplifier Power: 150W Class D, Cross-over Frequency: 35–250Hz (var), Dimensions (WxHxD): 480x300x150 mm, Weight: 8.5kg
- What’s in the box: 1 x 3060s Active Subwoofer, 4 x Spikes, Mains Cable, 1 x User Manual
Example: Q Acoustics 5020
The 5020’s official specifications list a nominal impedance of 6 Ω, sensitivity of 87.9 dB/W/m, and recommended amplifier power of 25–100 W. These figures apply to the 5020 only; they are not a general specification for all Q Acoustics speakers. Q Acoustics 5020 specifications
Sensitivity helps describe how much acoustic output a speaker can produce for a given input, but it does not by itself tell you how much amplifier power your room requires. Room size, listening distance, and preferred volume also matter; the specifications above are not enough to calculate an ideal output for an individual room.

Choose how the system will stream
Amplification and streaming are separate requirements. A stereo streaming amplifier can combine both functions in one component; alternatively, use an amplifier with suitable inputs and connect a compatible streaming source. A 2026 stereo amplifier guide describes the integrated “just-add-speakers” category, but that category description is not a compatibility recommendation for any particular speaker. Installed speakers are a different use case
Q Acoustics’ E300A is an installed amplifier for in-ceiling and in-wall speakers, not a general-purpose recommendation for bookshelf or floorstanding speakers. Q Acoustics specifies 2 × 25 W at 6 ohms and describes support for Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, AirPlay 2, and Amazon Music. Compare amplifier candidates on the same terms
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Speaker load | Compare the amplifier’s stated minimum impedance capability with the exact speaker model’s impedance guidance. |
| Power rating | Compare ratings at the same impedance and under comparable conditions with the speaker maker’s recommended amplifier range. |
| Streaming | Check for the services and protocols you use, network options, and regional availability for the exact model. |
| Connections | Confirm that the amplifier has the analogue or digital inputs required by your sources. |
| Installation | Distinguish a conventional stereo amplifier from an installed in-wall or in-ceiling solution. |
When QED speaker-switch advice applies
QED’s impedance guidance concerns configurations using its speaker switches, which can connect multiple speaker pairs. QED says its switches yield a 4 Ω minimum load with 8 Ω speakers; for 6 Ω speakers, it advises checking whether the amplifier can handle 3 Ω or less. This advice is specific to those switching configurations, not a universal rule for connecting one pair of speakers. QED speaker-switch and amplifier-impedance guidance

Can a streaming adapter work with an existing amplifier?
It may, if the amplifier has a compatible input. QED’s product brochure documents uPlay Plus as connecting a Bluetooth-enabled phone or computer to a hi-fi system through an analogue or optical connection. The brochure documents the product’s function; it does not establish current availability or present-day service compatibility. QED product brochure
