To connect a YouTube stream key to a scheduled live broadcast, open the intended event in YouTube Studio, copy that event’s stream key and server URL, and enter both in your encoder. Start sending the feed early, confirm its preview appears in the correct Live Control Room event, then select Go live. A YouTube Premiere is different: it is a scheduled upload, so it does not use an encoder stream key.
YouTube’s published help guidance does not document a separate stream-key process for India. Use the time zone shown in Studio and verify the event and preview before broadcast time.
Match the key to the scheduled live event
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send a video feed to YouTube. It must be paired with the matching YouTube Live server URL. YouTube describes stream keys as password- and address-like credentials that tell an encoder where to send the feed and let YouTube accept it. Treat the key as private: anyone with access may be able to send a feed through it.
- Confirm livestream access. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- Schedule or select the event. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live → Manage, then schedule the stream or select the scheduled event you intend to use. Reuse settings or create new ones as appropriate.
- Copy that event’s connection details. Open its stream settings and copy both the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Enter the details in your encoder. If the encoder offers YouTube as a service, select it and enter the corresponding key. Otherwise, paste the server URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field and the key into its stream-key field.
- Check the event before going live. Start the encoder, wait for the feed preview to appear in the intended Live Control Room event, and verify that the event is reachable. For a scheduled encoder stream, select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready to begin.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the event on YouTube, then stop the encoder after the event has ended.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees that a connection will work. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in your encoder.

Make sure it is the right event
Do not choose a key merely because its label or event title looks familiar. Check the stream settings attached to the scheduled event you mean to broadcast. If you reuse an existing key or settings, confirm in Studio that they are attached to that event before sending the feed.
Know whether you need a live stream or a Premiere
| Format | How it works | Does it need an encoder key? |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled live stream | An encoder sends a live feed to a scheduled YouTube event. You check its preview in Live Control Room and start the event there. | Yes. Use the server URL and key associated with the intended stream setup. |
| Premiere | A video is uploaded in advance and scheduled so viewers can watch together with live chat. | No. The Premiere itself is not an encoder-fed live stream. |
Schedule a Premiere without a stream key
Upload the video, choose Schedule, set the date and time, and select Set as Premiere. YouTube says Shorts are not supported for Premieres, and an uploaded Premiere cannot exceed 1080p output. Those are Premiere-specific limits; they do not describe the quality settings for an encoder-fed live stream.

Connect a live pre-show to a Premiere
If you want an encoder-fed live pre-show followed by a Premiere, create the Premiere first. Then configure Live Redirect in the live stream’s customization settings to send viewers to the selected Premiere when the live stream ends. YouTube’s stated eligibility for the channel sending the redirect is more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. YouTube recommends telling viewers to wait a few seconds for the player to reload. Confirm the current controls and eligibility in Studio before the event, since they may change.
Schedule for viewers in India
The official YouTube guidance reviewed does not establish a special India-only stream-key matching workflow. When scheduling, use the time and time zone displayed in Studio, and communicate the intended India local time clearly to viewers. Before the event, check the scheduled event itself and confirm that the encoder preview appears there.

Do not use the date on a public watch page as proof of the live event’s local start time. YouTube’s separate note that a published video’s watch-page date is based on Pacific Standard Time concerns scheduled video publication; it does not establish how a scheduled live event’s time is displayed or handled in India.
Common connection problems and fixes
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is sending to YouTube’s server URL and the key copied from the intended event. Confirm the encoder is running, then allow time for the preview to appear.
- The preview appears on the wrong event: Stop the encoder and check which stream settings and key are attached to the scheduled event. Reconnect using the details for the correct event; do not go live until its preview is visible in the intended Live Control Room.
- The key may have been shared or exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, then replace it in the encoder. Do not continue using a key you can no longer keep private.
- The channel cannot start a livestream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- The live-to-Premiere handoff is unavailable: Check the sending channel’s Live Redirect eligibility and configure the redirect on the live stream’s customization settings. If the channel does not meet YouTube’s stated threshold, the redirect feature may not be available to it.
