Yes—you can mass-edit more than 800 HTML files safely, but the right method depends on the change. For one exact text replacement, use Visual Studio Code’s global search and replace. Use PowerShell or Python for repeatable or per-file changes, and an HTML parser for structural edits. Before changing the full site, back up or branch, search without replacing, test a small sample, review the diff, and validate representative pages.
Choose the right method for the change
“Mass-edit” can mean a simple text replacement or a document transformation. Those are different jobs: a find-and-replace operation does not understand HTML structure.
| Change | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Replace one exact URL or phrase | VS Code global replace, or a script using literal replacement | Simple to scope and review when the exact text is consistent. |
| Replace a narrowly defined text pattern | VS Code regex or a tested script | Useful when variations follow a predictable pattern; inspect matches before writing. |
| Insert or remove a block of markup | Script or HTML parser | Guard against duplicate insertion and ensure the target location is correct. |
| Change an element or attribute based on its context | HTML parser | Targets document elements instead of every matching string, including strings in comments or scripts. |
| Generate a different result for each file | PowerShell, Python, or a parser | Can use file names, paths, or existing page content as input. |
| Change files produced by a CMS or build system | Edit the source template, content, or build pipeline | Direct edits to generated output may be overwritten by the next build or deployment. |
Prepare before editing hundreds of pages
- Find the durable source. Check whether the HTML is maintained directly or generated from a CMS, static-site generator, shared template, or build pipeline. If it is generated, change the source rather than relying on edits to output files.
- Make recovery possible. If the site uses Git, check the working tree and create a branch before editing:
git status, thengit switch -c mass-html-edit. Otherwise, work on a copy or create a dated backup archive. - Confirm the scope. Identify the root directory and file types. A search for
*.htmlwill not necessarily include.htmor server-side templates such as.php,.asp, and.shtml. - Inspect representative files. Open examples from different folders and templates. Check whether the target text, markup, encoding, and line endings are consistent.
- Search before replacing. Record the number of matching files and occurrences, and inspect the locations. Unexpectedly high or low counts are a reason to stop and refine the scope or pattern.
Encoding and newline handling deserve special attention. A tool can create a large diff by changing UTF-8 versus another encoding, a byte-order mark, CRLF versus LF line endings, or final-newline behavior. If nearly every line appears changed after a small edit, stop and investigate before proceeding.
Use VS Code for a straightforward global replacement
VS Code’s Search view can search and replace across an opened folder, limit results with file globs, and preview changes. See the VS Code documentation for search and replacement.

- Open the project root folder in VS Code rather than opening just one HTML file.
- Open global search: press
Ctrl+Shift+Fon Windows or Linux, orCmd+Shift+Fon macOS. - Search for the exact text without replacing it. Review the result files and matches, including pages from different folders. Note whether the text appears in content, attributes, comments, CSS, JavaScript, or JSON-LD.
- Limit the file scope in Files to include. Use
**/*.htmlfor HTML files under the opened folder;**/*.{html,htm}for both extensions; orpages/**/*.htmlfor a particular directory. To exclude common directories, use!**/{node_modules,.git,dist,build}/**. VS Code documents glob patterns and search scope on its search page. - Leave regex off for literal text. Enable regular expressions only when variations are intentional and the pattern has been tested. For example,
https?://old.example.commatches either HTTP or HTTPS for that host; replace it withhttps://new.example.com. VS Code uses JavaScript-style regular expressions and supports capture-group references in replacements; see its search and replacement notes. - Inspect the replacement preview before applying it. Check several matches, especially cases that differ in context or punctuation. First limit the operation to a test directory or a few files, then review those results.
- Apply the full replacement only after the sample behaves as intended. Review the changed files in Git or compare them with the backup.
VS Code is convenient for a one-time, reviewable change. A regex can still match the wrong context, and a visual editor is less suited to per-file logic or an auditable, repeatable migration. Record the search text, replacement, and scope if you may need to repeat the operation.
Use PowerShell for a logged, repeatable Windows edit
PowerShell can recursively enumerate files, read each file as one string with Get-Content -Raw, and write content with Set-Content. The Microsoft references cover recursive file enumeration, Get-Content, and Set-Content and its encoding options.

This script reports matching files and occurrence counts. It is a dry run: the write command is commented out.
$root = "C:Sitesexample"
$old = "https://old.example.com"
$new = "https://new.example.com"
$files = Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $root -Recurse -File -Filter *.html
$changed = 0
$matches = 0
foreach ($file in $files) {
$before = Get-Content -LiteralPath $file.FullName -Raw
$count = ([regex]::Matches($before, [regex]::Escape($old))).Count
if ($count -gt 0) {
$after = $before.Replace($old, $new)
Write-Host "$($file.FullName): $count replacement(s)"
# Uncomment only after reviewing the dry-run output and testing a sample.
# Set-Content -LiteralPath $file.FullName -Value $after -NoNewline -Encoding utf8
$changed++
$matches += $count
}
}
Write-Host "Files that would change: $changed"
Write-Host "Total replacements: $matches"
Run the dry run and verify the root, file list, and totals. Test the write operation on a copy or a small sample before uncommenting Set-Content. The example explicitly writes UTF-8; that may change files that used another encoding, so do not assume it preserves each file’s original encoding. Check the output for encoding and newline changes before applying the operation to the complete site.

For a controlled pattern, PowerShell’s regex replacement can be used instead of literal .Replace(). For example, the pattern https?://old.example.com(/[^"'s>]*)? can capture an optional path, and the replacement https://new.example.com$1 reuses it. Test cases with uppercase or lowercase variants, paths, queries, fragments, either quote style, comments, scripts, and already-updated values before writing. A regex over the whole file can also change text outside the intended link.
Use Python for cross-platform or per-file logic
Python is useful when an operation needs custom conditions, reports, or a repeatable transformation. This literal-replacement example is also a dry run by default:

from pathlib import Path
ROOT = Path("/path/to/site")
OLD = "https://old.example.com"
NEW = "https://new.example.com"
changed_files = 0
replacement_count = 0
for path in ROOT.rglob("*.html"):
text = path.read_text(encoding="utf-8")
count = text.count(OLD)
if count:
updated = text.replace(OLD, NEW)
print(f"{path}: {count} replacement(s)")
# Dry run by default. Uncomment after testing and reviewing the report.
# path.write_text(updated, encoding="utf-8", newline="")
changed_files += 1
replacement_count += count
print(f"Files that would change: {changed_files}")
print(f"Total replacements: {replacement_count}")
This example assumes UTF-8. If files use a legacy encoding or a mix of encodings, identify and handle that explicitly rather than reading every file as UTF-8. As with PowerShell, test output for encoding and newline changes before a full run.
For per-file work, a script can derive values from the filename, but predictable text is not a substitute for a parser when documents vary. For instance, replacing a title element with a regular expression can be a controlled shortcut only if the markup is known to be consistent; a parser is safer when attributes, whitespace, or malformed markup vary.

Use an HTML parser for structural changes
Choose an HTML-aware parser when the task is to add a class to particular elements, change links only under a condition, add missing image attributes, remove a specific script element, insert metadata into <head>, or change only the first heading. A parser works with tags and attributes rather than matching arbitrary text, reducing the chance of changing a similar string inside a comment, script, or style block.
Parsing is not automatically risk-free: serializing documents can normalize quotes, entities, whitespace, or optional markup and produce a much larger diff than the intended edit. Test the parser on representative pages and inspect its output before processing the full set. If the change is only one exact string, a parser may be unnecessary overhead.
Prevent common mass-edit failures
- Wrong scope: verify the root and include patterns, and exclude vendor, build, or dependency folders as appropriate. VS Code search scope can also be affected by ignore behavior and workspace settings; see its search notes.
- Unexpected file types: check for
.htm, server-side templates, hidden or ignored files, and symlinked directories if expected pages are missing. - Broad regex matches: narrow the pattern or use a parser. The same text may occur in visible content, attributes, comments, scripts, styles, or structured data.
- Repeated insertion: make insertions idempotent. For example, test whether a unique marker already exists before adding a block; otherwise a second run may duplicate it.
- Encoding or line-ending changes: inspect the diff size and open files containing accented or non-Latin text. Garbled characters, replacement symbols, or an unexpected full-file diff are reasons to restore and investigate.
- Broken URLs despite correct-looking text: verify relative versus absolute paths, query strings, fragments, URL encoding, case-sensitive paths on Linux hosting, canonical URLs, redirects, and internal links.
Validate the result and recover if needed
- Review the change set. In Git, run
git diff --statto see the scope,git diff --checkto flag whitespace errors, andgit diffto inspect the actual edits. Git documents diff and restore commands at git-scm.com/docs. - Search again. Look for the old value to find missed instances and the new value to check coverage. Investigate duplicates or unexpected counts instead of assuming the replacement is complete.
- Test different page types. Open representative pages in a browser and check links, scripts, stylesheets, images, metadata, canonical URLs, and structured data. A site crawl or HTML validation can catch issues that a text search will not.
- Undo narrowly if the scope is wrong. Use
git diff --name-onlyto identify affected files. Restore only the intended path withgit restore --source=HEAD -- path/to/affected/files; restoring a broad path can discard other uncommitted work. Without Git, restore from the backup.
If too many or too few files changed, stop before deployment. Check the root directory, file filters, pattern breadth, generated directories, extensions, capitalization, ignored files, and whether some pages come from templates rather than static files.
Which method should you use?
- For one exact, consistent replacement, start with VS Code and its preview.
- For a repeatable or conditional operation, use a dry-run script in PowerShell or Python and report files and match counts.
- For edits to elements and attributes based on document structure, use an HTML parser and inspect serialization changes.
- For generated pages, change the source template, content, or build process so the fix survives the next build.
No editor makes a bulk edit safe by itself. A narrow scope, a tested sample, a recoverable backup or Git branch, and a reviewed diff are what make editing hundreds of files manageable.
