To stabilize Puppeteer screenshot tests, change the page before capture: hide volatile content with CSS, collapse it if its space should not count, or replace it with a deterministic fixture if its size and placement are part of the test. Puppeteer’s documented screenshot options do not include a built-in locator mask or screenshot stylesheet option, so this is a page-preparation step—not a Puppeteer mask setting.
Choose what the test should still verify
Decide what matters about the changing region before suppressing it. A timestamp may be irrelevant while the surrounding layout matters. An ad creative may be unpredictable, while the ad slot’s dimensions and placement are important to the page.

Hiding an entire ad slot can make a test miss a sizing or placement regression. If those properties matter, keep the slot and make only its contents deterministic.
Apply stable styling before the screenshot
- Navigate to the page and wait for the application state your test is intended to capture.
- Identify the timestamp and ad elements. Prefer stable, application-owned selectors such as test IDs over selectors tied to incidental markup.
- Apply CSS or deterministic replacement content before taking the screenshot.
- Capture the page with
page.screenshot(), or capture a component withElementHandle.screenshot()when the assertion concerns only that element. - Keep the browser and rendering conditions consistent between baseline and comparison runs.

Keep the comparison meaningful
- Mask only known, intentionally volatile regions. A broad selector can hide defects the screenshot test is meant to catch.
- Use selectors with clear ownership and maintenance expectations. Revisit them when the page structure changes.
- Choose a stable replacement fixture when geometry matters; choose hiding only when the content itself is outside the test’s purpose.
- Run baseline and comparison captures under consistent browser versions, operating systems, settings, hardware, power conditions, and headless mode where possible. Rendering can vary across these conditions, as Playwright’s visual comparison guide notes.
How this differs from Playwright masking
Playwright documents a stylesheet technique for filtering volatile content and a screenshot API with locator masks and a stylesheet string. Those are Playwright APIs, not Puppeteer options. Does Puppeteer have a built-in screenshot mask option?

Should I hide an ad with visibility:hidden or display:none?
