The quickest manual update works the same way on Windows and macOS: open Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more (…) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, or enter edge://settings/help in the address bar. Edge checks for an update on that page. Choose Download and install when offered, then choose Restart when Edge says a restart is required. The About page also shows the installed version and whether the browser is current.
What you need before updating
Edge normally updates itself in the background, but a manual check is useful after a security announcement, when the browser has been open for a long time, or when you want to confirm a particular device is current. The procedure below applies to the current desktop editions of Edge for Windows and macOS.
- Keep an active internet connection. A captive-portal network, metered connection, VPN, proxy, or restrictive firewall can prevent the update service from reaching Microsoft.
- Save work in other applications and close any Edge windows you do not need. Edge can reopen tabs after restarting, but unsaved information in web apps should be saved first.
- Have enough free storage for the downloaded package and its temporary installation files.
- If the computer belongs to an employer, school, or other organization, expect that policy may control the update channel or remove update controls.
There is no single Microsoft-published download size or universal completion time for every Edge release. The package and installation time vary by version, device, connection, and operating system.

- Open Microsoft Edge. If Edge will not launch, skip to the installer section below.
- Open the menu. Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Open the About page. Select Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. You can go directly to
edge://settings/helpinstead. - Wait for the check to finish. Microsoft states that Edge checks for updates automatically, but you can manually check and install updates at any time. Leave the About page open while it checks.
- Install an offered update. If the page says An update is available, select Download and install. Edge downloads the package and prepares it for the next browser restart.
- Restart Edge when requested. If the page says To finish updating, restart Microsoft Edge, select Restart. This closes and relaunches the browser so the new files can be applied.
- Confirm the result. If the page says Microsoft Edge is up to date, no additional browser action is required.
The labels above are the important decision points. An update can be downloaded but not active until Edge restarts, so do not treat a completed download as the final verification.
What each About-page message means

What is different on Windows and macOS?
The Edge menu and About-page workflow is shared by both desktop platforms. The address edge://settings/help, the update buttons, and the version display work the same way. The meaningful difference is the second update channel: Windows can also receive Edge through Windows Update, while macOS has no equivalent Windows Update screen.
On a Mac, use the About page first. If it cannot retrieve the package, download the installer from Microsoft’s official Edge site using another browser if necessary. Quit Edge when the installer requests it, complete the on-screen steps, reopen Edge, and check the About page again. Avoid third-party download sites, because the official installer is the supported recovery path.

On Windows, the About page is still the most direct check. Windows Update is useful when a system update or restart is pending, or when an organization distributes browser updates through its operating-system management process. Whichever route you use, the final authority for the browser build is the version and status shown in Edge’s About page.
Use Windows Update as a second route on Windows
Windows can deliver Edge updates through the operating-system update channel. This option exists only on Windows; macOS does not have a Windows Update equivalent.
- Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- For any offered updates, select Download & install.
- Restart Windows when it prompts you. A pending operating-system restart can also be relevant when Edge itself appears unable to complete an update.
After Windows finishes, open Edge and use the About page to verify the browser version. Windows Update is an operating-system channel, so it may not present the same timing or controls as the browser’s own check.
Use the official Edge installer when checks fail
If the About page cannot download or apply an update, and Windows Update has not resolved the problem on a Windows computer, use Microsoft’s official Edge download page. The same fallback is available on macOS.

- Open Microsoft’s official Edge download page in another browser if Edge cannot connect.
- Select Download for your operating system.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its on-screen instructions.
- When installation finishes, open Edge and return to
edge://settings/helpto check the installed version and status.
Microsoft says that updating with its installer keeps favorites, passwords, and settings. This is an update path, not a request to erase your profile; nevertheless, make sure important work is synchronized or otherwise backed up before changing software on a managed or heavily customized computer.
If the download page offers several operating-system choices, select the one matching the computer you are repairing. Do not use an installer copied from an unknown site or an old file saved from a previous release. A fresh package from Microsoft gives the updater the best chance of replacing incomplete or damaged files.
Verify that the new version is actually active
Do not rely only on the installer window or a restart notification. In Edge, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge, or enter edge://settings/help. The page displays the installed version number and reports whether Edge is up to date.
- If a version number is visible and the status says the browser is up to date, the update is active.
- If the page still asks you to restart, the downloaded build has not yet been applied to the running browser.
- If the page shows an error or repeatedly offers the same update, use the troubleshooting branches below rather than repeatedly clicking the same control.
Record the displayed version if you are troubleshooting several computers or need an audit trail. Compare the result only with the channel and policy used by that device; a managed installation may intentionally receive updates on a schedule different from a personal computer.

Think of these as an escalation path rather than four interchangeable buttons. Start with the browser because it gives immediate feedback. On Windows, check the operating-system channel if a restart or package is pending. Use the official installer only when those checks cannot complete. Always return to the About page, since that is where you can see both the version and the final up-to-date message.
Why Edge will not update, and how to fix it
Update failures usually come from connectivity, policy, storage, permissions, or a partially completed previous update. Work through the causes in the order below so that you do not change more settings than necessary.
1. The connection, VPN, or proxy is blocking the check
First open a few ordinary websites to confirm that the connection is usable, then temporarily disconnect a VPN or test a different network if your organization permits it. A VPN can allow normal browsing while still blocking Microsoft’s update service. Metered connections may also postpone large downloads.

On a managed network, the administrator may need to allow Microsoft’s update endpoints. Microsoft identifies msedge.api.cdp.microsoft.com for update checks and *.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com for downloads. If those destinations are filtered, changing Edge settings locally will not solve the problem; ask the network administrator to review the rule.
2. A firewall or security product is intercepting update traffic
Endpoint security, antivirus web inspection, and host-firewall rules can block the updater even when the browser itself works. Check the security product’s event log for a blocked Edge or Microsoft update process. Rather than leaving protection disabled, create an approved exception through your organization’s normal process or test the update with the security policy owner present.
3. Windows has a pending update or restart
On Windows, open Start > Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart if prompted. A pending Windows restart can leave shared components or installer services in an intermediate state. After Windows comes back, retry the Edge About page and verify the version.
4. There is not enough free storage
Edge needs space for the download, temporary files, and the replacement installation. Delete or move unneeded files, empty the recycle bin, and retry. Do not remove Edge’s profile folders to create space: those folders contain browsing data and are not a safe substitute for ordinary disk cleanup.
5. The installer lacks permission
An installer can fail when the account cannot write to the required program locations or when an organization restricts software changes. Sign in with an account that is allowed to install approved applications, or ask the administrator to perform the update. Repeatedly launching the same installer without the required rights will not change the policy.

If Edge downloads an update but fails at the install stage, restart Windows or macOS first and try the official installer. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers administrator rights, update-cache problems, and reinstalling Edge from its official site. Use that documented recovery path instead of deleting random folders or registry entries, which can remove profile data or make later repair harder.
7. Compatibility or system conditions prevent installation
Older operating-system builds, unusual system configurations, or other compatibility conditions can stop a package from applying. Install all applicable operating-system updates, restart, and then retry. If the installer reports a specific compatibility requirement, follow that message; do not force an unsupported package.

8. Update controls are missing or disabled
Dimmed controls, a missing download button, or a policy message often means the computer is organization-managed. Microsoft advises contacting the IT administrator in that situation. The administrator may schedule updates, pin a browser version for testing, or restrict direct installation. Personal troubleshooting cannot override those controls safely.
Common pitfalls that make a successful update look unsuccessful
- Closing the wrong window: Downloading a package is not the same as applying it. Use Edge’s Restart control when it appears.
- Checking too soon: Windows Update may complete in the background and require a system restart before the browser can use shared components. Restart first, then check again.
- Testing only ordinary browsing: A webpage loading does not prove that the Microsoft update endpoints are reachable. VPN, proxy, firewall, or DNS filtering can affect only update traffic.
- Removing profile data: Deleting favorites, password, or profile folders to free space risks losing data and does not repair the updater. Use normal disk cleanup instead.
- Using an unofficial installer: Third-party packages can be outdated or modified. Microsoft’s own download page is the supported fallback.
- Ignoring ownership: A work or school computer may be intentionally held on a particular version. Ask IT before forcing a manual installation.
Windows 10 support status and what it means for Edge updates
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This lifecycle statement is separate from the Edge update procedure: the About-page steps can still be present, but the operating system’s support status affects what Windows Update can deliver and the security posture of the computer.

Saving work before a restart, avoiding untrusted download sites, and verifying the final version prevent most avoidable interruptions.
