To manually install a Microsoft security update, identify the device’s exact Windows release, build, edition, and processor architecture, then download the matching MSU package from Microsoft Update Catalog. Install it with Windows Update Standalone Installer, DISM, or PowerShell, restart, and verify the result using more than one signal.
A KB number by itself is not enough. The same KB family can have different packages for different Windows releases and architectures, and a package may require a servicing-stack update (SSU) or an earlier checkpoint cumulative update. Get-HotFix is useful, but it does not report every update channel, so a missing KB there does not automatically mean installation failed.
What a manual KB installation actually involves
Microsoft publishes many security updates as Microsoft Standalone Update packages with an .msu extension. An MSU contains the package metadata and payload that Windows servicing applies to the running operating system or an offline image. Manual installation is useful when Windows Update has not offered an update, when an administrator needs a controlled deployment, or when troubleshooting requires a specific package.

The safe workflow has five decisions:
- Identity: confirm the exact KB number and revision.
- Applicability: match the package to the product, release, build, edition, and architecture.
- Dependencies: install any required SSU or checkpoint packages in Microsoft’s stated order.
- Application: use Windows Update Standalone Installer, DISM, or PowerShell.
- Verification: compare hotfix data with update history, the expected OS build, and servicing-package state.
Installing a similarly named package for another Windows release can produce an “update is not applicable” message, or it can leave the intended security fix absent.

1. Identify the Windows target before downloading anything
Record the device’s release and build
On the target computer, record the Windows edition and version, OS build, and processor architecture. In Windows, press Win+R, enter winver, and note the version and build. You can also open Settings and view the Windows edition, version, and OS build under the system information page. Check whether the machine is x64, arm64, or x86 where that architecture is supported.
Do not rely on a label such as “Windows 11” or “Windows 10” alone. A package for Windows 11 version 23H2 is not interchangeable with one for version 24H2, and an x64 package is not the correct payload for an arm64 installation.
Read the KB article’s applicability details
Open the Microsoft Knowledge Base article for the exact KB. Read these sections before downloading:
- Applies to: confirms the product and release covered by the package.
- Prerequisites: identifies SSUs, earlier cumulative updates, or other required packages.
- Supersedence: shows whether a newer cumulative update replaces the package.
- Known issues: warns about documented installation or post-installation behavior.
- Build information: provides the OS build expected after a successful installation.
Microsoft’s own troubleshooting guidance warns that a package for a different release or architecture can be rejected or be inapplicable. Keep the KB article open while selecting a Catalog result; the KB number alone is not a sufficient selector.
2. Download the matching package from Microsoft Update Catalog
Microsoft Update Catalog is the authoritative location for standalone Windows update packages. Catalog entries are intended primarily for advanced users and administrators, but the download process is straightforward.
- Open Microsoft Update Catalog in a browser.
- Enter the KB number in the search field, using the format
KB1234567. - Review every result’s product name, Windows release, architecture, classification, and publication or revision information.
- Select the row matching the device’s product, release/build family, and architecture. Avoid a similarly named result for another release or an older superseded revision.
- Add the selected item to the basket and choose Download.
- Save the MSU file in a local folder such as
C:Packages.
Catalog search results can include x64, arm64, and x86 packages, as well as packages for different editions or server products. A result that contains the right KB digits but the wrong product or architecture is not the right download.
3. Check prerequisites and checkpoint ordering
Servicing-stack updates
A servicing-stack update changes the components Windows uses to install later updates. If the KB article lists an SSU prerequisite, download and install that package before the security or cumulative update. Treat the prerequisite as part of the update’s dependency chain rather than as an optional extra.

Windows 11 version 24H2 checkpoint cumulative updates
For Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, some cumulative updates use checkpoint packages. The Microsoft Update Catalog view can expose preceding checkpoint MSU files that must be installed first. When the KB article or Catalog identifies checkpoints, download every required MSU and install them in the listed order. Skipping a checkpoint can cause the target cumulative update to fail or be reported as not applicable.
Microsoft’s May 12, 2026 Windows 11 security update example, KB5089549, demonstrates the MSU installation methods and ordering requirements that apply to releases using this model. Use the instructions attached to the particular KB rather than assuming that all cumulative updates have the same sequence.
What “not applicable” usually means
“This update is not applicable to your computer” generally means that Windows cannot find a matching product state or prerequisite. Check, in this order:
- the exact Windows version and build;
- the architecture (x64, arm64, or x86);
- whether the update is for the installed edition or product;
- whether an SSU or checkpoint is missing;
- whether a newer cumulative update has already superseded the package.
Do not force an MSU intended for another release. Find the matching Catalog row or use the newer cumulative update that applies to the device.

Option A: Windows Update Standalone Installer
For an interactive installation, locate the downloaded .msu file in File Explorer and double-click it. Windows Update Standalone Installer checks the package and starts servicing. Approve the administrator prompt when requested, follow the displayed instructions, and allow the installer to finish. If several MSUs are required, install them in the prerequisite or checkpoint order specified by Microsoft.
Option B: DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
DISM is useful for repeatable or scripted servicing. Open Command Prompt (Administrator), replace the path and filename with the package you downloaded, and run:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:Packageswindows11.0-kb1234567-x64.msu/Online targets the currently running Windows installation. The path must point to the actual MSU file; quote it if the path contains spaces:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"C:Update Packageswindows11.0-kb1234567-x64.msu"For an offline Windows image, the target and servicing syntax are different. The command above is specifically for the running installation and should not be used as an offline-image command.
Option C: PowerShell
Open an elevated PowerShell window and use the Windows package cmdlet:
Add-WindowsPackage -Online -PackagePath "C:Packageswindows11.0-kb1234567-x64.msu"Use the same package-order rules as with DISM. Installing a prerequisite and the target update in separate commands makes it easier to identify which package produced an error.
5. Restart and let servicing complete
Restart when the installer requests it. Windows may perform pending component actions during shutdown and startup. Do not power off the computer or interrupt the restart while servicing is in progress.
After signing in, wait for Windows to finish any “working on updates” or pending-action phase before checking the KB. A package can be staged before the restart and only become fully active afterward.

Query the KB with Get-HotFix
In PowerShell, query the specific identifier:
Get-HotFix -Id KB1234567A successful result normally displays fields such as HotFixID and InstalledOn. To list all hotfixes reported on the computer and sort them by installation date, run:
Get-HotFix | Sort-Object InstalledOnThese commands are convenient for a quick check and for administrative scripts. Replace KB1234567 with the real KB number; retain the KB prefix.

Understand the Get-HotFix limitation
Get-HotFix uses the Win32_QuickFixEngineering WMI class. Microsoft describes that class as listing hotfixes supplied through Component Based Servicing (CBS), commonly called QFE updates. Microsoft also notes that updates delivered through MSI or the Windows Update site may not be returned.
Therefore, “Get-HotFix cannot find the KB” is not proof that the MSU failed. Use independent evidence before uninstalling, retrying, or declaring failure.
Check Windows Update history
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Look for the KB number, its installation date, and any status or error code. History can show an update that does not appear in the WMI hotfix list.
Compare the OS build with the KB article
Run winver again or check the OS build in Settings. Compare the resulting build with the build number listed in the KB article. A matching post-update build is strong corroboration that the cumulative update took effect, even when the hotfix query is incomplete.
Inspect servicing-package state
To view packages known to the servicing stack, run this command in an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Get-Packages /Format:TableReview the package names and states for the relevant KB or package family. This view helps distinguish a package that is installed from one that is merely staged, pending, superseded, or absent. Package naming can include revision details, so match the entry to the KB article rather than searching only for a shortened text fragment.

How to troubleshoot a failed or apparently missing update

When a package is rejected immediately
Recheck the filename, product line, release, and architecture. Catalog search can return multiple rows with the same KB number. The wrong row may be rejected even though the KB digits look correct. Confirm that the device is not running a different edition or build family than the package description.

When a prerequisite is missing
Read the KB article’s prerequisite section and the Catalog details. Install the SSU or checkpoint first, restart if requested, and then run the target MSU. On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, do not rearrange checkpoint packages merely to reduce the number of restarts; their order is part of the servicing requirement.
When verification signals disagree
Use the evidence in this order: Windows Update history to establish whether Windows recorded the operation, the KB article’s expected build to establish whether the cumulative payload is active, and DISM package state to establish what the servicing stack considers installed or pending. Treat Get-HotFix as an additional signal, not as the sole inventory.
Windows 10 support-date implications
Microsoft’s current support notice states that free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 end after October 14, 2025. A manual Catalog workflow does not create new security fixes after that date. It can still install a package that Microsoft published for a supported servicing scenario, but the device’s eligibility and licensing arrangement determine whether later security updates exist for it.
For a Windows 10 device in 2026, first confirm that the KB actually applies to the installed release and that Microsoft published it for that servicing channel. Do not assume that a recent Windows 11 KB has a Windows 10 equivalent.
A repeatable administrative procedure
For a single computer, the following sequence minimizes guesswork:
- Write down the KB number, Windows edition and version, OS build, and architecture.
- Read the KB article’s applicability, prerequisite, supersedence, known-issue, and build sections.
- Search Microsoft Update Catalog for the KB and select the exact matching product, release, and architecture.
- Download the MSU and any SSU or checkpoint files identified by Microsoft.
- Install prerequisite files first, then the target MSU, using the Standalone Installer, DISM, or PowerShell.
- Restart and wait for all pending servicing actions to finish.
- Run
Get-HotFix -Id KB1234567, then check update history, the resulting build, and servicing-package state.
This sequence separates package selection from installation and verification. That separation is what prevents a correct KB number from being mistaken for a correct package or an incomplete hotfix listing from being mistaken for a failed update.
