You can manage Windows quality updates without Intune using Windows Update client policies in Group Policy, or through an existing WSUS or Configuration Manager setup. These approaches let you control update sources, timing, staged rollout, and restart experience. The right choice depends on your Windows editions, network access, and current management systems.
Choose an update-management path
Windows Update client policies are not exclusive to Intune. Microsoft documents configuring them through Group Policy as well as MDM, with controls for which updates are offered, when they are applied, and how deployments are staged. Policy availability depends on Windows edition and release; Microsoft lists Pro, Education, and Enterprise for Windows 10 and Windows 11, along with additional supported variants. Check the applicable policy documentation for the exact target OS before deploying: Windows Update client policies (documentation last updated August 19, 2026).

Plan the rollout before changing policy
First establish which service should supply quality updates to each device group. Some organizations use different sources for different update classes, but that requires explicit, consistent scan-source settings. Conflicting Group Policy, MDM, WSUS, or Configuration Manager settings can redirect scans or interfere with management. Prefer documented Group Policy or CSP settings for scan-source configuration rather than relying on direct registry edits.

- Inventory the fleet. Record Windows editions and versions, device ownership and join state, internet access, and existing WSUS or Configuration Manager policies.
- Choose the update source and policy owner. Decide which system controls quality updates for each device group. If update classes use different services, document and configure their scan sources.
- Create deployment groups. Start with a pilot or validation cohort, then expand to broader groups after checking results. Microsoft recommends staged deployment, but does not prescribe a universal number of groups or delay. Set the schedule to match your risk tolerance, support capacity, and servicing obligations. - Set timing and user experience. Configure applicable deferrals or pauses, deadlines, notifications, and restart behavior with the Windows Update client policies supported by your target release.
- Validate on representative devices. Confirm that effective policy and scan source match the design, then monitor installations and compliance using the reporting in your chosen management system. Investigate devices that diverge before expanding deployment.
Use Group Policy to control quality updates
On supported commercial Windows editions, Group Policy provides a way to configure Windows Update client policies without an Intune quality update policy. Use the policy documentation for the particular Windows release and edition to confirm available controls and names; do not assume every setting applies identically across versions.
Quality updates are generally issued monthly and are cumulative: the latest applicable cumulative update brings a device current for its installed Windows version. Without an Intune quality update policy, devices can still receive updates through standard Windows Update behavior. Client policies can control timing and the user experience, including deadlines, restarts, and notifications. Keep WSUS or Configuration Manager in the update path
WSUS and Configuration Manager remain documented management options. Configuration Manager can use a software update point backed by WSUS; the important design task is making the intended source clear for each update class and avoiding policy overlap that sends clients elsewhere. Review Microsoft’s guidance for integrating Windows Update client policies with WSUS alongside your existing client and server configuration.
Do not assume that retaining WSUS means every update class or scan is automatically managed the same way. Verify the effective configuration on test devices and check it again when changing Group Policy, MDM, WSUS, or Configuration Manager settings.

When a third-party patch service may fit
A non-Microsoft service may be worth evaluating if your organization needs additional automation or broader patch reporting. Action1 and ManageEngine publish information about Windows patch-management services (Action1; ManageEngine), but vendor descriptions alone do not establish comparative quality or suitability. Evaluate supported Windows versions and servers, offline and remote endpoint handling, update source, deployment safeguards, reporting, security requirements, and total cost. Availability and terms should be confirmed with the vendor.
