Apple School Manager (ASM) is the school’s deployment portal; a separate mobile device management (MDM) service configures iPads and Macs, applies policies, and distributes apps and books. The basic workflow is to connect the MDM server to ASM, add devices and assign them to that server, enroll them using a model suited to ownership and use, then manage and maintain them through MDM.
Plan the deployment before enrolling devices
Decide how students will use the fleet before configuring it: one-to-one devices assigned to individuals, shared classroom iPads, or a combination. Define who owns and supports the devices, how the rollout will be staged, and what successful enrollment and classroom use look like. Apple describes education deployment as ranging from shared devices in individual classrooms to one-to-one devices throughout a district (Apple’s education deployment guide).
- Identify the participating IT, school leadership, teaching, and support teams.
- Choose the student account, roster, identity, and app-licensing workflows the school will use.
- Confirm the planned MDM supports the school’s iPadOS and macOS versions and required enrollment modes.
Apple’s education deployment guide focuses on US K–12 and higher-education settings and notes that features vary by region. Check the availability of services and integrations for the school’s country before designing the rollout (Apple education deployment overview).

What Apple School Manager does—and what MDM does
ASM links school device records to an MDM service and also supports school accounts, classes, and app and book purchasing. MDM is the service that sends settings and restrictions to devices, manages enrollment, and distributes content. ASM does not replace MDM; both are needed for the organization-owned deployment described here (Apple deployment overview; Apple School Manager setup guide).

Prepare ASM, MDM, accounts, and rosters
- Set up Apple School Manager. Establish the institution’s ASM environment and decide who will administer it.
- Add the MDM server in ASM. Complete the certificate and server-token exchange between ASM and the chosen MDM service. Follow the current instructions from both services.
- Connect school systems where supported. Apple documents student information system (SIS) integration directly or through SFTP, as well as federated authentication with supported identity providers. Confirm that your SIS and identity provider are supported in your region and by the MDM workflow you plan to use.
- Plan account and class synchronization. Decide how student identities, classes, and rosters will be created and kept current. Test a small group before importing a full roster.
Apple’s setup guide covers connecting an MDM server, device management, and integrations with school systems (Apple School Manager setup guide). Available features and supported services can differ by country.
Add devices to ASM and assign them to the right MDM server
Devices bought through linked Apple or participating reseller and carrier channels can appear in ASM. Eligible devices can also be added manually using Apple Configurator. After a device record is available, assign it to the MDM server that will manage it; assignment is what allows that service to configure activation and enrollment settings (Apple’s device assignment guide).
- Link participating purchase channels to ASM when applicable.
- Check that each device appears in ASM, or use Apple Configurator for eligible devices that need manual addition.
- Assign devices to the intended MDM server. If the school has one MDM target, consider automatic assignment for eligible future purchases.
- Verify assignment and synchronization in both ASM and the MDM before preparing devices for students.
Choose the enrollment model
Enrollment determines how a device joins MDM and what can be configured during setup. Match the method to who owns the device and whether one student or many students will use it. Apple documents Automated Device Enrollment and manual Device Enrollment as distinct paths; exact capabilities depend on the device’s operating system and MDM (Apple enrollment guide).

Organization-owned, individually assigned iPads and Macs
Automated Device Enrollment is designed for organization-owned devices and can bring management into the initial setup experience. On supervised devices, the MDM profile can be made nonremovable. Decide whether enrollment is mandatory and whether Setup Assistant should authenticate the student or another user. When an authenticated user is associated with a device, MDM can apply user- or group-based management.
Manual Device Enrollment
Manual Device Enrollment is user-initiated, so it is a separate choice from Automated Device Enrollment. Apple notes a Mac-specific behavior: on Macs running macOS 11 or later, manual Device Enrollment also enforces supervision. Verify the current enrollment options and restrictions for the exact OS versions and MDM in use.
Shared classroom iPad
Shared iPad is intended for multiple students using a classroom iPad. Each iPad must be supervised in ASM for this mode. Enabling Shared iPad through MDM takes effect after the device’s next activation and MDM enrollment; removing Shared iPad requires erasing and reactivating the device. Configure and test the mode before handing devices to students, and plan for the erase-and-reactivate requirement if the use model later changes.

Configure the setup experience, policies, and security
Use MDM to apply device settings, restrictions, and security requirements. For eligible enrolled devices, MDM can skip some Setup Assistant panes. On iPad, however, language, country or region, and Wi‑Fi selection cannot be skipped before activation. Skipping a pane may leave a feature at its default setting; hiding a setup step does not by itself disable that feature (Apple enrollment guide).

Apple’s security guidance describes capabilities that may be available through compatible MDM and enrollment, including setup authentication, minimum operating-system requirements, FileVault enforcement on Mac, and control over profile removal. These are configuration capabilities, not a universal policy prescription. Choose settings according to district requirements, student privacy expectations, and the school’s support plan (Apple Platform Security).
- Test the student setup flow from activation through first sign-in.
- Document which settings are applied by device, user, or group.
- Explain privacy-sensitive controls to the people who use and support the devices.
- Confirm the intended profile-removal and recovery behavior before rollout.
Distribute apps, books, and classroom content
ASM and MDM work together to support app and book distribution, including wireless installation and updates. Tie selections to curriculum, licensing, and classroom needs, then verify that the content reaches the correct devices or users. Apple’s education guide also covers Classroom, Schoolwork, class creation, and ongoing device management (Apple education deployment overview).

Manage iPads and Macs together
The fleet-management pattern is broadly the same for both device types: keep device records in ASM, assign them to an MDM server, enroll them, configure them through MDM, and review their status over time. Shared iPad is a specific iPad mode, not a general option for Macs. Enrollment behavior also has platform-specific details, including the supervision behavior Apple documents for manually enrolled Macs running macOS 11 or later.
Before rollout, verify the MDM’s supported payloads and workflows against the exact iPadOS and macOS versions in the school. A feature supported on one platform or OS version should not be assumed to work identically on the other.
Operate the fleet and protect the management connection
Review device assignment, enrollment state, and applied policies as students move between classes or leave the institution. Keep the ASM-to-MDM connection current: Apple says MDM server tokens expire after one year and must be replaced, and warning notifications may not arrive. Track renewal as a scheduled operational task rather than relying only on an alert (Apple’s server-token renewal guide).

For locally hosted MDM, Apple recommends regular backups and restoration testing. Include certificates, tokens, device relationships, and Activation Lock bypass codes in recovery planning, and verify that restoration works before an outage makes it urgent (Apple’s MDM backup and restore guide).
Choose an MDM by requirements, not an unsupported ranking
Apple’s deployment guidance explains the operational needs but does not establish a current vendor comparison or pricing survey. Evaluate candidate services against the school’s requirements and verify vendor claims directly.
