To prevent the wrong host or credential from being used, also check variable scope: a local or data variable can override the value in the selected environment. Keep secrets in Postman Vault when they should not sync or be shared, and treat any revealed CLI output as sensitive.
How to switch between development, test, and production
Create a distinct environment for each meaningful context. An environment groups values used by requests and scripts, so selecting a different one can change the host, credentials, or other settings without rewriting the request. Give environments clear names and descriptions, such as “Development” and “Production.”
- Select the intended environment in Postman before running a request. The environment selector and current interface can change; consult Postman’s environment documentation for current UI details.
- Check that the request’s resolved URL and relevant values match the target system. Pay particular attention before sending a request that could change production data.
- If a value looks unexpected, inspect matching variables in other scopes as well as the active environment. Postman marks overridden variable values with strikethrough formatting in its UI.
The selected environment supplies context-specific values, but it is not the only place Postman can find a variable. Scope precedence can cause a request to use a different value than the environment’s.
Why Postman may use the wrong variable value
Postman documents variable scope precedence from broadest to narrowest as global → collection → environment → data → local. When the same name exists in multiple scopes, the narrowest matching scope wins. Consequently, a data or local value can override the value in the active environment.

Postman’s script reference explains that pm.variables.get() returns the closest-scope value. Likewise, pm.variables.set() creates a local value that persists only for the current request or collection run. This can be useful for temporary script results, but it can also explain a surprising host or credential.
When a script specifically needs the value from the environment, use the scope-specific method, such as pm.environment.get(), rather than the generic closest-scope lookup. When debugging a request, check for duplicate names across scopes and inspect the resolved URL and credential—not only the environment entry.

Where to store API keys and other sensitive values
Choose storage based on whether the value needs to sync, who should be able to access it, and how scripts or CLI workflows need to read it. Vault, local values, and masked variables are different controls; none should be treated as a substitute for the others.

Postman recommends using Vault for sensitive data such as API keys, describing them as “encrypted vault secrets” in its team environment documentation. Its security documentation says environment variables are encrypted on the server before storage using AES-256-GCM; the documentation does not establish that every local, shared, or transmitted secret is protected in every context. Treat encryption, synchronization, access, and UI masking as distinct questions.

How to share an environment without exposing secrets
Share only values that collaborators are meant to view or use. A shared environment value syncs for people who can access that environment. Editors can change shared values, while viewers can view and use the environment. Grant edit access deliberately, and keep secrets that should not be available to collaborators in Vault instead.
- Use clear environment names and descriptions so teammates can distinguish contexts.
- Review environment access and editing rights before sharing.
- Keep credentials out of shared values when collaborators should not have them; use Vault for those secrets.
- Remember that masking a value in the UI is not the same as preventing synchronization or access.

Use Postman CLI without leaking secret values
Postman CLI can read local files or cloud environments. Its environment-get command hides secrets by default, but the --show-secrets option reveals them. Avoid enabling that option unless necessary, and do not expose revealed values in terminal recordings, logs, screenshots, or shared sessions. Consult the Postman CLI variable documentation for current command behavior.
