For a few profiles, use Instagram’s built-in account switcher and check the active handle before you post. If you need planned publishing, team access, or coordination across more accounts, a scheduler such as Buffer, Later, or Hootsuite may help. There is no evidence here for a universal best app or a current price winner; choose based on the profile types and workflow you need.
Switch between Instagram accounts in the app
Instagram’s in-app profile switcher is the simplest choice when you only need to move between your own profiles. Buffer’s help article describes switching by tapping the account name at the top of the profile screen. Interface labels may change, so look for the account name or handle in that area.
- Open the profile screen in Instagram.
- Tap the account name at the top and select the profile you want to use.
- Before publishing, check the selected handle. Buffer’s guidance specifically warns users in its notification publishing workflow to confirm the intended account.
Instagram’s account switcher versus Meta account settings
Switching profiles inside Instagram is different from managing connected experiences in Meta’s account settings. Meta describes Accounts Center as a place to manage options such as single sign-on and cross-posting between connected accounts. Those connections are optional; review which profiles are linked and which experiences are enabled rather than assuming that linking accounts is required to switch profiles.
On April 23, 2026, Meta announced that Accounts Center would gradually transition to Meta Account over the following year. Meta said the transition would not change day-to-day app use. The announcement does not say that Instagram’s in-app profile switcher is being removed, and the rollout may not have reached every account yet. Meta’s Meta Account announcement and its earlier Accounts Center announcement explain the distinction.

When a social media management app is useful
A management service can be worth considering when you plan posts ahead, coordinate several profiles, or need a team workflow. The reviewed product documentation supports relevant functions across Buffer, Later, and Hootsuite, but it does not establish which is best for every user. Compare the details that affect your work:
- Whether the service supports your Instagram account type and the formats you publish.
- How many social profiles your plan allows, and whether each Instagram profile uses a separate slot.
- Whether publishing is scheduled directly or relies on a notification workflow.
- Who can access each profile and what permissions team members receive.
- Whether its analytics meet your needs, and the current price and plan terms.
Check each service’s current product terms before choosing a plan. The documentation reviewed here does not provide a side-by-side feature test or current price comparison.

Buffer
Buffer documents connecting multiple profiles and publishing workflows. Its connection guidance says the Instagram account active in the browser can determine which account is connected, so sign into the intended profile first. Buffer also describes a client-account workflow that uses a linked Facebook Page when the user has the required Page permissions; this may avoid sharing the client’s Instagram password for that connection, but it does not guarantee that every task or feature can be completed without direct Instagram access. Buffer’s Instagram connection guidance and multiple-account guidance explain its setup and switching workflows.
Later
Later documents Instagram authentication, scheduled publishing, and profile slots that depend on the plan. When adding a profile, use the exact username and password for the intended Instagram account. If saved browser credentials keep selecting the wrong profile, Later recommends trying a private browser window. Confirm current slot limits, supported formats, team permissions, and prices directly with Later. Later’s Instagram connection article covers its account setup guidance.

Hootsuite
Hootsuite’s surfaced help information identifies Instagram Business and Creator profiles and organization or team management. The available support information does not establish its full current feature set, profile caps, prices, or all connection requirements. Check Hootsuite’s current help and plan details before relying on it for a particular account or team workflow. Hootsuite’s Instagram connection help is a starting point.
Connect the intended Instagram profile to a scheduler
Browser sessions and saved credentials can silently point a connection flow at the wrong account. When accounts are ambiguous, connect them one at a time and verify the profile shown in the tool before continuing.

- In the browser, sign out of the Instagram profile that should not be connected, then sign in to the exact profile you intend to add. Buffer notes that its connection flow uses the active Instagram browser session.
- Start the connection from the management tool and follow its authorization steps. For Later, use the username and password of the Instagram profile being added; if saved credentials select another profile, try a private browser window.
- Confirm the connected handle in the management tool. If it is wrong, disconnect it and repeat the setup with the intended profile active.
- Before scheduling or sending a post, check the destination profile and the publishing method the tool uses.
Working with more than five Instagram accounts
Buffer’s help center says Instagram allows up to five accounts per device and that logging in to a sixth may require removing remembered login details and logging out. That is a Buffer support claim, not a limit independently confirmed here by current Instagram documentation. Treat it as guidance to verify against Instagram’s own help materials before restructuring your setup. Buffer also discourages regular notification publishing for more than five profiles because repeated logins may create friction. Buffer’s multiple-account support article states both points.

For larger workflows, a scheduler may reduce the need to switch manually, but its profile capacity depends on its current plan. Check plan limits and the required Instagram account types before moving accounts into a tool.
Quick Recap
Reduce login friction and protect client access
- Avoid needless logouts. Buffer warns that frequent logins and logouts, especially from different IP addresses, can trigger security flags. This is its operational guidance, not a quantified or independently verified Instagram enforcement rule.
- Use delegated access when available. For the client connection workflow Buffer documents, the user needs the required permissions on a linked Facebook Page. This can avoid sharing the client’s Instagram password for that setup, but check feature-specific access requirements.
- Keep profiles identifiable. Confirm the handle at connection time and again before publishing, particularly when several profiles use the same browser or management workspace.
