Hot air and louder fans during demanding games are often normal: the CPU and GPU generate more heat under load, and the cooling system speeds up to move it out. To reduce noise safely, first clear the vents and choose a thermal mode suited to the task. If the laptop overheats at light workloads, shuts down, or develops abrupt or unusual fan behavior, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and support for your exact model.
Why a gaming laptop gets hot and loud
Gaming puts sustained demand on the processor and graphics hardware. ASUS explains that resource-intensive work raises CPU and GPU temperatures, prompting the fans to accelerate and push air through the heat sink; Dell likewise notes that fan speed and noise change with internal temperature. Noise alone does not prove a fault. Consider what the laptop is doing, its selected thermal mode, whether its vents have room to breathe, and the guidance for its specific model. ASUS’s overheating and fan troubleshooting guide and Dell’s thermal troubleshooting guide describe these behaviors.
Improve airflow before changing settings
- Place the laptop on a firm, open surface rather than bedding or another soft material that can block its intake.
- Keep intake and exhaust openings clear, and leave space around the sides and rear so discharged air can escape.
- If the laptop’s design allows, a stand can raise it and provide more clearance beneath it. A cooling pad is another optional airflow aid, not a guaranteed fix or a substitute for clear vents. ASUS suggests a stand or cooling pad; Lenovo advises checking the laptop’s specifications and cooling-pad compatibility. See Lenovo’s laptop cooling guidance.
There is no universal temperature reduction established for stands or pads. Fit, vent alignment, stability, adjustability, and any size or power requirements depend on the laptop and accessory.

Choose a thermal mode for the workload
Use the laptop maker’s supported control app or settings rather than assuming that a mode name means the same thing across brands. Quiet or balanced settings may reduce fan activity, while performance-focused modes can allow more fan noise in pursuit of higher sustained performance. The available modes and their behavior are model-specific.

| Setting choice | What to expect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet or balanced | May reduce fan noise; sustained performance and temperature behavior can differ from a performance profile. | Whether your model offers the mode and how its manufacturer describes the trade-off. HP says select notebook models include a quiet thermal profile: HP’s fan-noise troubleshooting guidance. |
| Performance | Can permit higher fan speed and temperature on specified models; it is intended for users prioritizing performance over acoustics. | Exact model and power conditions. Lenovo describes operation modes for Legion laptops in its Legion operation-mode documentation. For specified Legion and LOQ models, Lenovo says Performance mode may be unavailable on battery or with an under-rated power adapter: Lenovo’s model-specific power and battery guidance. |
For a quieter session, try the supported quiet or balanced option and check whether the resulting performance remains adequate. For demanding games where frame rate matters more, a performance profile may be preferable if the laptop is connected to the correct power adapter. Expect the fans to respond to workload and the mode; do not treat any one profile as universally best.
Clean vents cautiously
Dust at external vents can interfere with airflow. Check the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s warranty or service instructions before cleaning; laptops differ in vent layout and in what maintenance users should perform.

- Whisper Quiet: The 9 fans of the laptop cooling stand are all added with capacitor components to reduce working noise. the gaming laptop cooler is almost quiet enough not to notice even on max setting.
- Start with the manufacturer’s recommended external vent-cleaning procedure. HP includes vent cleaning among its troubleshooting steps.
- ASUS suggests commercially available compressed-air cans, held at a distance from the vents and not inverted. Follow the instructions for your exact model and the can; do not assume this general guidance applies to every laptop.
- Do not treat opening the chassis or removing internal parts as a universal do-it-yourself step. Use model-specific service guidance if internal cleaning is needed.
Check software and use diagnostics if the problem persists
If fan noise is persistent or cooling seems ineffective, check whether an application is using substantial CPU or GPU resources even when you are not gaming. HP’s guidance also points to checking suspicious processes and updating the BIOS; follow the support instructions for your exact laptop rather than installing firmware from an unrelated model’s page.
