Use only songs for which you can document permission for the composition and the specific sound recording, and confirm that permission covers YouTube, continuous live transmission, your territories, monetization if applicable, and any replay. A license does not necessarily prevent YouTube from interrupting a live stream: the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Treat rights clearance and YouTube’s matching system as two separate tasks.
What rights you need before playing a song
A song may involve separate rights in the underlying musical work and in a particular sound recording. The Government of India’s Copyright Act, 1957 and the Copyright Office’s Handbook of Copyright Law describe these distinct rights and the permissions that may apply. Do not assume that permission for one layer, one recording, or one type of use covers the others.

Check the actual track and license
For every track, identify the composition, the recording you will use, and the actual rights owners or authorized licensor. Read the license terms rather than relying on a label such as “royalty-free” or “free.” Keep the agreement, receipt, track list, correspondence, and any channel allowlist confirmation together.

| Rights covered | Permission covers both the musical work and the specific sound recording, or clearly identifies which rights it grants. |
| Platform and use | YouTube use and continuous live transmission are allowed; confirm monetized use if you plan to monetize. |
| Territory and term | The countries where viewers may access the stream and the period for which the permission remains valid are covered. |
| Replay | Archiving the live stream and making the replay available are permitted, if you intend to keep an archive. |
| Content ID | The licensor explains whether the channel must be allowlisted, who can do it, and how to confirm it is complete. |
| Evidence and support | You have written, track-level proof of permission and a contact who can help resolve a mistaken match or claim. |
The Copyright Office Handbook names IPRS and PPL as examples of organizations that may be relevant to permissions for music works and sound recordings. That does not establish that either organization controls every track, that its license alone is sufficient for your YouTube use, or that its current repertoire or terms cover your intended use. Verify ownership, repertoire, territories, and the exact license directly.

How to clear tracks and prepare the YouTube channel
- Build a track list. Record each song’s title, composer or other work details where available, the recording and its source, the rights owner or licensor, and the evidence for your permission.
- Read the track-specific terms. YouTube points creators to its Audio Library as a place to find royalty-free music. Check the terms for each individual track and preserve a copy or record. For commercial music, obtain written terms that explicitly address the use you intend.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting before launch. Give the rights owner or authorized administrator the exact YouTube channel details and ask how that channel will be added to the relevant allowlist. Retain their confirmation. YouTube’s help guidance says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the owner has not allowlisted the channel.
- Check each planned use against the permission. Confirm that the license covers continuous live transmission, the relevant territories and period, monetization if applicable, and the archive if you plan to keep one. If a term is unclear, get written clarification before adding the track.
- Keep the evidence accessible during operation. Store licenses, receipts, track records, and allowlist correspondence where the person monitoring the stream can retrieve them promptly.
A description saying a song is free, crediting its creator, or finding it online does not itself establish permission or prevent a Content ID match. YouTube cautions that even music labeled “free” online may still be flagged.
What YouTube may do while the stream is live
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it identifies content, it may issue a warning, replace the stream picture with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the detected content continues. This can happen even when you believe you have permission; having a license and having the channel allowlisted address different issues.

If Studio or the live stream shows a warning
- Stop or remove the affected music promptly rather than allowing it to continue while you investigate.
- Check YouTube Studio for the relevant restriction, claim, or strike notice and note which track or content is identified.
- Compare the notice with your track list and permission records. If your license applies, contact the rights owner or authorized administrator about the match and confirm the channel’s allowlist status.
- Do not restart with the same track until you have resolved the issue or replaced it with music whose permission and Content ID handling are clear.
Check the replay separately
If you archive a completed live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream ends. Confirm that the permission also covers the replay and its availability period. If it does not, disable or remove the archive where appropriate rather than assuming that clearance for the live transmission automatically covers it.
Claims, removal requests, and strikes are different
A Content ID claim is not automatically a copyright strike. Read the specific Studio notice and use the response route that applies to it. A copyright removal request that YouTube considers valid can lead to removal of the content and a strike.

Respond to the notice you actually received
- If the issue is a Content ID match, check whether the track is licensed for the use, whether the channel was allowlisted, and whether the rights owner can resolve the match.
- If you receive a copyright removal request, follow the instructions and deadlines in that notice. YouTube’s help guidance describes a scheduled removal request that can give the uploader seven days to take specified actions before removal and a strike; the available actions depend on the case.
- Use a counter notification only when you have a good-faith legal basis. A license or other evidence may matter, but do not dispute simply because you credit the owner or found the song labeled free.
- YouTube’s strike guidance says a qualifying strike can expire after Copyright School is completed and the applicable 90-day waiting period passes, subject to the channel’s strike status. Follow the current notice and help guidance for your case.
What Indian copyright law does—and does not—mean for a music stream
The Copyright Act, 1957 defines communication to the public broadly to include making a work or performance available through diffusion, whether or not someone actually accesses it. The Act recognizes rights in musical works and sound recordings, and section 14 includes performance or communication to the public among the rights for musical works. These provisions are why a song being publicly available online does not, by itself, establish that you can rebroadcast it continuously on your channel.
Section 52 lists specific exceptions, including fair dealing for specified purposes such as private or personal use, criticism or review, and reporting current events. Those exceptions are not a blanket permission for a 24/7 music entertainment stream. Whether an exception applies depends on the actual facts and current law; get advice from an Indian copyright lawyer for a disputed or high-stakes use.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo can keep an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not clear music rights or prevent a copyright match; you still need permission for every track and should arrange any required Content ID allowlisting. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded video as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
