For nausea, feeling full quickly, constipation, or other stomach symptoms on a GLP-1-based weight-loss medicine, try smaller meals, eat slowly, stop when comfortably full, and sip fluids through the day. If symptoms persist, worsen, interfere with daily life, or make it hard to keep fluids down, contact your prescriber. Do not change your dose on your own. These tips apply most directly to GLP-1-based medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide; other prescription weight-loss medicines can have different side effects and instructions.
Which side effects are common with GLP-1-based medicines?
Gastrointestinal symptoms are common with GLP-1-based therapies, but the exact effects vary by product. The FDA’s current WEGOVY prescribing information lists nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and abdominal pain among common adverse reactions. The FDA’s MOUNJARO trial snapshot lists nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, and abdominal pain.
Use the Medication Guide for your exact medicine to check its side effects and warnings. These medicines do not all share the same adverse effects or instructions.
How can I manage nausea or feeling full quickly?
- Choose smaller meals and eat slowly.
- Stop eating when comfortably full rather than trying to finish a usual portion.
- Ask your prescriber whether avoiding high-fat or spicy foods might help.
- Drink water or other sugar-free fluids through the day.
These are general strategies, not a substitute for medical advice. If nausea makes it difficult to eat or drink, tell your care team.

What should I do about vomiting or diarrhea?
Pay attention to fluids, especially if vomiting or diarrhea continues. Persistent or severe symptoms can cause dehydration, which may lead to kidney problems and require medical attention. Contact your clinician if symptoms are severe, persistent, concerning, or make it difficult to keep fluids down. Do not rely on diet changes alone for alarming symptoms.
FDA labeling warns that volume depletion from gastrointestinal symptoms can contribute to acute kidney injury. Seek urgent medical care for severe or alarming symptoms, and follow the warnings in your product’s Medication Guide.

How can I manage constipation or reflux-like discomfort?
Discuss these symptoms with your prescriber or care team, particularly if they persist or worsen. General gastrointestinal strategies in professional guidance include smaller meals, hydration, light activity, and waiting at least two to three hours after eating before lying down. What is appropriate can depend on your health and other conditions.
Can I slow down a dose increase or change my medication?
Gastrointestinal effects can arise when treatment starts or the dose changes. A clinician may consider slower dose escalation, extending the current phase, adjusting treatment, or switching medicines. Do not reduce, increase, skip, repeat, or reschedule a prescription dose on your own.

FDA consumer guidance likewise recommends working with a health professional to determine whether adjusting the dosage or switching medicines may ease a side effect: Finding and Learning about Side Effects.
When should I contact a clinician urgently?
Get prompt medical advice for severe or alarming symptoms, or for vomiting or diarrhea that is persistent or prevents you from keeping fluids down. Dehydration can become serious, and product labels include warnings beyond routine stomach upset. Consult the Medication Guide for your specific medicine rather than assuming warning signs are identical across products.

What if I use compounded semaglutide?
Compounded products may have different presentations and administration instructions from FDA-approved pens. The FDA reports dosing errors involving measurement and administration of compounded semaglutide, some with serious consequences including hospitalizations. Ask your healthcare provider or compounder to explain how to measure and administer the intended dose; do not assume pen instructions apply to a compounded product. See the FDA alert on compounded semaglutide.
Check the guidance for your exact medicine
For product-specific common effects, dose escalation, and serious warnings, use the current FDA prescribing information and Medication Guide for your medicine and review questions with your prescriber. The management advice here is strongest for GLP-1-based therapies, not every prescription weight-loss medication.
