A YouTube stream key is a credential: it tells an encoder where to send video and lets YouTube accept that feed. To manage a 24/7 music stream safely, select or create the key in YouTube Studio, enter it only in OBS’s stream settings, restrict access to the channel and OBS configuration, and reset the key promptly if it may have been exposed. A key does not itself keep a stream running continuously; the encoder still needs operational testing and monitoring.

What the stream key does—and why it needs protection

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key and the server URL are separate encoder settings: OBS sends the feed to YouTube using that destination and credential. Anyone who obtains the key may be able to send a feed to the associated stream, so treat it as secret configuration data, not as a value to share casually. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

These instructions concern a YouTube music stream encoded locally in OBS. The consulted YouTube guidance explains the key lifecycle and encoder workflow, but does not describe OBS’s internal secret-storage behavior or promise uninterrupted 24/7 availability.

Set up the key in YouTube Studio and OBS

  1. Open the stream controls. In YouTube Studio, choose Go Live to open Live Control Room, then select the Stream tab. Create a custom stream key if you need a reusable key, or select the intended existing key. YouTube also allows creators to reuse prior stream settings; that carries over the previous key, so verify which key is selected before starting another stream. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
  2. Enter the server and key in OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings and choose YouTube as the service if using the built-in integration, or configure the server and stream key fields if entering connection details manually. Put the YouTube server URL in the server field and the selected key in Stream Key. Do not put the key in a scene, overlay, on-screen text, public chat, tutorial, screenshot, shared document, or other material that could be seen by viewers or people who do not need access. These are prudent handling precautions based on the key’s credential role, not an OBS security feature claim.
  3. Restrict access. Give channel administration access only to trusted people; YouTube explicitly advises this. Also limit access to accounts and machines that can open or change the OBS configuration containing the key. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
  4. Preview before relying on the feed. Prepare the encoder in advance, preview the stream in Live Control Room, and check that audio and video are correct before the broadcast is relied on. If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video continuously during a stream. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

Rotate a key if it may have been exposed

If the key appears in a public screenshot, document, message, or broadcast—or you otherwise suspect someone unauthorized has it—reset it in Live Control Room’s Stream tab. Copy the replacement into OBS and verify the encoder reconnects using the new value. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Resetting changes the credential, so an encoder still using the old value will need updating. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Plan for continuity, not just credential safety

A protected key does not prevent an OBS crash, computer shutdown, network outage, or YouTube connection drop. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports advance preparation, previewing, testing backup-encoder failover, and monitoring audio/video; it does not guarantee continuous availability. YouTube states a channel can have up to 10 active streams and a stream key up to 3 active streams. These are platform limits, not uptime or security measures. The consulted page did not state a publication date, so check the current guidance before relying on these volatile limits. YouTube Help: Streaming tips YouTube Help: Encoder settings and live stream setup

YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish how longer continuous streams will be archived. Music rights and YouTube’s copyright or reused-content decisions are separate from stream-key handling. A valid key is not permission to broadcast music.

Common problems and what to check

  • OBS will not connect after a key reset: replace the old value in OBS with the newly generated key, confirm the server URL is in its separate field, and retry the connection.
  • A new stream unexpectedly uses an old key: check whether you reused prior stream settings in Live Control Room, then verify the selected key matches the value configured in OBS.
  • The stream appears connected but the music or picture is wrong: preview in Live Control Room and check the encoder’s audio and video before depending on the stream; continue monitoring while it runs.
  • You are unsure whether the key is still private: treat uncertainty as possible exposure, reset the key, and update authorized encoders. Do not try to solve a suspected leak by merely hiding the old value in OBS.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is 24/7 prerecorded music on YouTube, a cloud service is an alternative to keeping a local OBS computer running. StreamNeo is #1 among the options covered here because it runs always-on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives a first day free. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or its plans, then start the free day.
