For a TeamViewer session that connects but feels sluggish, open the session toolbar’s Quality control and choose Optimize speed. It prioritizes smoother control over image detail. A stale screen and a connection that will not start need different fixes, so use the steps below for the symptom you are seeing.
Make a connected session feel more responsive
During the remote-control session, open the toolbar’s Quality control and select Optimize speed. TeamViewer says this setting favors fluidity and responsive control, but graphic quality may be reduced. The exact toolbar location and available options can vary by platform and session context. TeamViewer’s display-settings guide describes the available choices.
Choose a setting for the work
| Setting | What it favors | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Optimize speed | Fluidity and responsive control | Graphic quality may be lower |
| Optimize quality | A more accurate visual display | Connection fluidity may decrease |
| Auto select | A balance between speed and quality | Balances the two rather than prioritizing one |
If the image detail matters more than motion—for example, when inspecting a visual—compare Optimize quality with Auto select. Custom settings may also let you adjust colors, quality, fast video streaming, GUI animations, and application compatibility. TeamViewer notes that the application-compatibility option reduces performance, so it is not the first choice when responsiveness is the goal.
Refresh a screen that looks frozen
If the remote display appears stale or frozen, choose Refresh screen from the session toolbar. TeamViewer describes this as requesting an update to the graphics display, which can help when the screen looks frozen or many tasks are running on the remote computer. It refreshes the display; it does not establish that a network bottleneck has been fixed. See TeamViewer’s instructions for refreshing the remote screen.

Fix a connection that will not start
If TeamViewer shows “Not ready. Please check your connection,” follow this path. The outbound-port advice applies to this connectivity problem; it is not a routine firewall change for every user.
- Test general internet access. Open a webpage or another web application on the device running TeamViewer. If those also fail, resolve the device’s internet connection first.
- Check TeamViewer’s outbound reachability. If TeamViewer cannot reach the internet, its troubleshooting guidance says to allow outbound port 5938. Ask your network administrator if you do not manage the firewall.
- Restart after a recent failure. If TeamViewer worked only minutes earlier, exit and reopen the application, or reboot the device.
- Check service status. If internet access is working and restarting does not help, check TeamViewer’s status page for a service issue.
These steps follow TeamViewer’s troubleshooting guidance for the alert: “Not ready. Please check your connection”.

Check session traffic instead of guessing at bandwidth
To investigate whether a session is using substantial network traffic, open Connection Information during the session and inspect the data coming to and going from the device. TeamViewer says those values can help calculate usage for that connection. Traffic varies with what you do in the session, the devices, and the network, so a reading from one session is not a universal bandwidth requirement. The reviewed guidance does not specify a minimum internet speed. See TeamViewer’s Connection Information guide.
