Your carrier usually controls how long an unanswered mobile call rings before it goes to voicemail—not a universal setting on your phone. Contact your carrier to ask whether the timer on your line can be extended. A documented self-service option exists for some US Mobile networks, but its dial codes do not apply to other providers.
How do I change the number of rings before voicemail picks up?
First, identify your carrier and, if you use an MVNO, the network your line runs on. Then check that provider’s current instructions or contact its support team. A dial code that changes call forwarding on one network may not work on another, so do not assume there is a universal code.
Also distinguish ring duration from the number of audible ringtone cycles. The network timer determines when an unanswered call is forwarded; the ringtone affects what you hear during that time. Changing a ringtone may make a call easier to notice or change how many cycles you hear, but it does not extend the carrier’s timer.

AT&T
AT&T’s “Use Voicemail on Your AT&T Mobile Phone” support page, last updated May 5, 2025, tells customers who want more time before calls go to voicemail to contact AT&T. It does not publish a specific adjustment code or maximum duration on that page. Call 611 from an AT&T Wireless phone, or use the postpaid or prepaid customer-service contact options listed on the page, and ask whether the ring time can be changed on your line.

US Mobile
US Mobile documents a self-service ring-time adjustment for its Light Speed and Dark Star networks. Its Advanced setup instructions list intervals of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 seconds and provide the corresponding dial codes. Follow the live instructions there rather than copying a code from another carrier or an old guide; first confirm which US Mobile network your line uses.
US Mobile says Warp lines ring for 30 seconds and that the duration cannot be changed. Its instructions also say an iPhone on Dark Star should be running iOS 18.5 or newer. Check the current help page for the exact code and any updated requirements before making a change.

Verizon
A Verizon Community support response describes an approximately 30-second network ring time that cannot be extended. Because this information comes from a community thread rather than a formal current support article, treat it as an indication, not a guarantee for every line. Contact Verizon to confirm the current setting for your account.

The ringtone is the sound your phone plays when a call arrives; the carrier’s call-forwarding or voicemail setting controls when an unanswered call moves on. A different ringtone can make the alert more noticeable, and its pattern can affect how many audible cycles fit before forwarding. It cannot make the network wait longer. Similarly, a louder alert may help you hear a call, but it does not change the voicemail timer.

Which approach should you use?
- Ask carrier support if your provider does not publish a self-service adjustment, or if you need confirmation for your specific line. AT&T explicitly directs customers seeking more time to contact support; Verizon’s approximately 30-second guidance is from a community response.
- Use the provider’s own instructions only when they explicitly cover your carrier and network. US Mobile’s codes are for Light Speed and Dark Star, with the listed intervals; Warp is described as fixed at 30 seconds.
- Do not rely on a handset menu or a code found for another provider as a general fix. The available provider guidance does not establish a universal phone setting or cross-carrier code.
