Vim then waits for a motion and calls your function with the selected range type. If you instead want to add a new way to select text for built-in commands such as delete or yank, use an operator-pending mapping with :omap.
Choose the right extension point
| What you want to add | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| A new operation that transforms or inspects text selected by a motion | 'operatorfunc' and g@ |
Your callback receives the motion’s range. |
| A new motion or text-object-like selector for existing operators | :omap |
The mapping selects a range while an operator is pending; commands such as delete and yank can use it. |
These mechanisms solve different problems: g@ supplies the operation, while :omap supplies a way to select text. If users need to see or adjust a range before applying an operation, a Visual-mode entry point may be more suitable, though Visual mode takes more keystrokes and has limited redo functionality. See Vim’s motion reference for motion and Visual selection behavior.
Make an operator with g@ and 'operatorfunc'
The sequence is: a mapping sets the function name in 'operatorfunc', then returns g@. Vim enters operator-pending mode and waits for a motion. After the motion, it calls the function. The callback receives one argument: "char" for characterwise, "line" for linewise, or "block" for blockwise-Visual operation. The '[ and '] marks identify the start and last character of the operated range. This documented mechanism requires a Vim build compiled with +eval. See the Vim Reference Manual’s “Mapping an operator” section.
Minimal Vimscript pattern
function! TransformOperator(type) abort
" The operated range is marked by '[ and '].
" Handle a:type: 'char', 'line', or 'block'.
" Perform the transformation for that range shape.
endfunction
function! StartTransformOperator() abort
let &operatorfunc = 'TransformOperator'
return 'g@'
endfunction
nnoremap <expr> <Leader>t StartTransformOperator()
Replace the callback comments with the operation you need. The mapping starts the operator; it does not itself choose text. For example, invoke the mapping and then type a motion or text object. Vim determines the range from that motion and passes its type to the callback.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add a Visual-mode entry point if needed
When users should be able to select text first, add a Visual-mode mapping as well as the Normal-mode mapping. Vim’s documented CountSpaces example uses nnoremap <expr> and xnoremap <expr> to set up the callback and return g@. For newer Vimscript patterns, that example binds a function reference with function('CountSpaces', [context]), which allows operation-specific context. Consult the example in the operator-mapping reference for its full handling of Normal and Visual invocation.
Use nonrecursive mappings such as nnoremap and xnoremap so the mapping’s own keys do not unexpectedly expand through other mappings. An expression mapping can also preserve a prefix count or register when your design needs those values.

Handle range shape and editor state deliberately
- Use the callback type. Do not assume every motion selects a characterwise or linewise range. Decide explicitly how the operation handles
char,line, and, if supported,block. - Use the range marks carefully. Treat
'[and']as the authoritative callback boundaries. Motion inclusivity affects which characters belong to a range; translating the marks into another selection or editing command requires care. - Restore state you change. If the callback alters registers, marks, or options, save and restore them, including when the operation errors. Vim’s documented example uses
try/finallyand restores the unnamed register, Visual marks, and options such as'clipboard','selection', and'virtualedit'after temporarily adjusting them. - Check feature availability. Use
:versionto check whether the Vim build includes+eval;g@is not available without it. - Plan dot-repeat separately. Do not assume a short callback automatically repeats correctly with
.. The reference example tracks repeat state and notes that expression mappings avoid command-line enter/leave autocommands. Design and verify repeat behavior for your own operation.
Use :omap when you are defining a motion
If your goal is to make a new selector that existing operators can consume, define an operator-pending mapping rather than a transformation callback. The Vim User Manual demonstrates :omap <F7> a{: after an operator is pending, pressing <F7> selects a brace-delimited block. That lets existing operators use the selection. See Vim User Manual: Mappings.
