For most people, the practical way to make a Chromebook-like computer from an existing laptop is to install ChromeOS Flex. You can also build ChromiumOS from source, but that is a developer project rather than a simpler installation route. Flex is the better fit if you want a usable everyday computer; a source build is for people who want to work on the operating system itself.

Choose the right route for your goal

Route Best for What to know
ChromeOS Flex Converting a compatible Windows, Mac, or Linux computer into a Chromebook-like device Install from a USB drive. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models; an uncertified computer may work, but its performance, features, and stability are not guaranteed.
ChromiumOS from source Developers who want to build and test the open-source operating system Requires a Linux build workstation, a board-specific build, and a separate device to test. A generic build does not ensure that a particular laptop’s hardware will work.

If your goal is simply to keep an older laptop useful, start by checking whether its exact model is certified for ChromeOS Flex. If you want to modify or develop ChromiumOS, use the source-build route and identify the target board before beginning.

Check whether a computer is suitable for ChromeOS Flex

Google’s minimum target requirements are an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible device, 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, USB boot capability, and administrator access to the BIOS. These are minimums, not a guarantee that every feature will work.

Certification is the important reliability boundary: Google guarantees ChromeOS Flex functionality on certified models, while uncertified devices are not guaranteed to have reliable performance, full functionality, or stability. Google does not recommend or support Intel or AMD devices from 2012 and earlier, or Nvidia devices from 2014 and earlier.

Compare candidate laptops before installing

  • Certification: Look up the exact model, not just the manufacturer. A successful USB boot alone does not make a machine certified.
  • Processor and graphics: Prefer hardware newer than the generations Google identifies as unsupported or not recommended.
  • Memory and storage: The minimum is 4 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage; more headroom is useful for everyday multitasking and files.
  • Firmware access: Confirm that you can enter BIOS or UEFI settings and boot from USB.
  • Everyday hardware: Check the functions you rely on, including Wi-Fi, audio, touchpad, webcam, sleep, and—on convertible devices—tablet mode.
  • Update support: Check whether the model has an Automatic Updates end date and account for it when deciding whether the conversion is worthwhile.

Install ChromeOS Flex from a USB drive

You need a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the installer erases everything on that drive, so copy any files you want to keep somewhere else first. Google’s ChromeOS Flex preparation instructions offer Chromebook Recovery Utility for ChromeOS, Windows, or Mac; an image can also be written with a suitable imaging tool.

  1. Create the installer: Use Chromebook Recovery Utility on a supported computer, or download the ChromeOS Flex image and write it to the USB drive with a suitable imaging tool. Select the correct USB device; its contents will be erased.
  2. Boot the target laptop from USB: Insert the installer and use the computer’s boot menu or firmware settings to start from USB. The key or menu procedure varies by model.
  3. Test before installing, if desired: Start ChromeOS Flex from USB to check whether essential components such as Wi-Fi, audio, and the touchpad work on your hardware.
  4. Install to internal storage when ready: Follow the on-screen installation flow only after you are comfortable replacing the computer’s existing operating system. Installing to internal storage changes the target computer, so save important files and verify you have selected the intended device.

The USB test is useful for discovering obvious compatibility problems, but it does not establish that every feature—including sleep, webcam, or tablet mode—will work reliably over time. For a dependable result, rely on certification rather than a successful installer boot.

Build ChromiumOS from source instead

Source compilation is a different undertaking from installing Flex. The ChromiumOS quick start officially supports Ubuntu 22.04 and requires a 64-bit system with sudo access. The project’s hardware guidance recommends a multi-core x86-64 workstation, 32 GB of RAM, and 200 GB of free disk space, preferably on NVMe storage. You will also need a ChromiumOS device under test (DUT) and a USB thumb drive of at least 8 GB. Ethernet is recommended for moving build artifacts; use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter if the DUT has no Ethernet port.

Documented build sequence

  1. Prepare the Ubuntu workstation: Use Ubuntu 22.04, a 64-bit system, and an account with sudo access. Install Git, curl, xz-utils, and zstd; set up depot_tools and the required sudoers configuration as described in the ChromiumOS quick start.
  2. Initialize and sync the source: Initialize the ChromiumOS manifest with repo init, then retrieve the source with repo sync. Use the manifest and setup instructions in the official quick start for the exact initialization arguments.
  3. Select a board: Set the board name for the target build. The quick start uses amd64-generic as a starter example; it is not a promise of compatibility with every laptop.
  4. Build packages: Run cros build-packages --board=${BOARD}.
  5. Build an image: Run cros build-image --board=${BOARD}.
  6. Write the image to USB: Run cros flash --board=${BOARD} usb:// to flash the build to a USB device. Make sure you select the intended removable drive.
  7. Boot and install on the DUT: Boot the target device from USB. When ready to install, run /usr/sbin/chromeos-install on the target.

Do not run the build commands as root. Before committing to a board, check that it corresponds to the device and that the hardware you need is supported. A generic image does not guarantee working camera, audio, suspend, Wi-Fi, or graphics on a particular machine.

What a Flex conversion does not guarantee

ChromeOS Flex on a general-purpose PC should not be assumed to match a factory Chromebook’s hardware integration or app support. Android-app availability is device-specific: ChromiumOS documentation says devices launched in or after 2019 generally support Android apps unless otherwise specified, and older devices are listed individually. That guidance does not establish Android-app support for a generic PC running ChromeOS Flex.

Chromebook firmware changes are an advanced, separate risk

If the target is already a Chromebook, its firmware and device-specific boot process require extra care. The ChromiumOS quick start calls for entering developer mode and following the device-specific method for USB boot; do not assume that instructions for one Chromebook apply to another.

MrChromebox’s utility offers options including RW_LEGACY firmware for dual booting and coreboot/UEFI Full ROM firmware for operating systems outside stock ChromeOS, as well as firmware backup. Its warning is explicit: “Flashing the firmware has the potential to brick your device, requiring relatively inexpensive hardware and some technical knowledge to recover.” It also states: “Flashing Full ROM firmware will remove your ability to run ChromeOS.” Restoring stock firmware is limited on devices that have reached end of life.

Before any firmware flash, verify the device’s board and HWID, charge the battery, connect AC power, make a firmware backup, and read the project’s support and unbricking documentation. Treat firmware replacement as a device-specific operation, not a general step in making a Chromebook.
