You can make your Mac look cute using the built-in macOS controls: choose a wallpaper and matching appearance, customize folder icons and colors, add a few widgets, then tidy the Dock and menu bar. The settings are reversible, so you can experiment without committing to one style.
1. Choose a wallpaper and color palette
Start with the desktop image, since its colors can guide the rest of your choices. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Wallpaper and select an image from Apple’s built-in categories or add a photo or image of your own. You can also set an image from Safari, Finder, or Photos as your wallpaper. Some built-in wallpapers offer dynamic, light-or-dark, or shuffled presentation; available options depend on the wallpaper. See Apple’s wallpaper instructions.
Pick a small palette that works with the image—for example, soft greens and cream, or lavender and charcoal. Check that desktop icons remain easy to see against the background. If you change your mind, choose another image in Wallpaper settings.
2. Match macOS appearance to the wallpaper
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Appearance. Choose Light, Dark, or Auto, then select an accent color and an icon or widget style where those controls are available. A light interface can suit a bright pastel background; a dark interface can make saturated colors stand out. Prioritize readable text and clear contrast over a perfect color match.

Apple also provides accessibility controls for text and pointer size. If interface text or the pointer is difficult to see, adjust those settings rather than making the wallpaper or icons harder to distinguish. Apple’s Mac personalization guide describes appearance and accessibility options. Exact labels and available controls can vary by macOS version.
3. Customize folders with colors and icons
Folder styling can make the desktop more personal while helping you spot important projects. In Finder or on the desktop, Control-click a folder and choose Customize Folder. Choose a folder color and add an icon or emoji if the options are available in your macOS version.

Use a consistent visual cue for practical categories—for example, one color for current projects and another for personal files. Keep the emoji or icon recognizable at a glance, especially for folders you open often. Apple documents folder customization in its personalization guide.

4. Add a few useful widgets
Widgets can sit on the desktop or in Notification Center. To add desktop widgets, Control-click the desktop and choose Edit Widgets. Add the widgets you want, place them where they fit, and choose a size or edit displayed information when the widget offers those options. You can reposition widgets afterward.

A small selection—such as a calendar alongside a weather widget—usually keeps the desktop calmer than filling every open space. Choose widgets for information you actually want to see, and check that their text remains legible over the wallpaper. Using iPhone widgets on a Mac
iPhone widgets on Mac require iOS 17 or later, the same Apple Account on both devices, and either proximity or the same Wi-Fi network. Some widgets may open their app on the iPhone rather than on the Mac. These requirements and behavior are described in Apple’s widget guide.

5. Finish with the Dock and menu bar
Adjust the Dock to suit the space you have and the way you work. In Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock, change its size or position and choose whether it hides. Add frequently used apps by dragging them to the Dock; remove an item by dragging it out of the Dock. Removing an app icon does not uninstall the app.

How to keep the result coordinated
- Visual effect: Let the wallpaper and a restrained accent color establish the look; use folder colors and widget styles as supporting details.
- Legibility: Check contrast on the desktop and in widgets, and adjust text or pointer size if needed.
- Usefulness: Keep widgets and Dock items that provide information or quick access you want; remove the rest.
- Flexibility: Wallpaper, appearance, folders, widgets, and Dock settings can be changed again through macOS settings or their respective controls.
- Compatibility: Confirm the Apple Account, iOS version, and network or proximity requirements before relying on iPhone widgets.
