To make a laptop last longer between charges, reduce screen brightness, shorten the screen timeout, and switch on your operating system’s battery-saving mode. These settings slow current power use; they cannot restore capacity lost as a battery ages. Start with the free adjustments below, then check battery care and charging options for your specific laptop.
Reduce power use on Windows 11
- Choose an efficient power mode. Open Settings > System > Power & battery and select Best power efficiency when runtime matters more than peak performance. Turn on Energy saver to reduce power use and, where supported, background activity. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide.
- Dim the screen and shorten its timeout. In Settings > System > Power & battery, lower brightness and set the screen to turn off sooner when idle. The exact options can vary by device.
- Reduce display and background work. If your laptop offers a lower refresh rate, use it when smooth motion is not important. Review Energy recommendations and limit unnecessary syncing or background activity. - Disconnect what you are not using. Unplug idle USB accessories and turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you do not need a connection. This is most useful when those devices or radios would otherwise remain active.
Reduce power use on Windows 10
Windows 10 includes battery-saving guidance for brightness, screen timeout, Battery saver, and power modes where supported. The labels and available controls can differ by device. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so include that security status in any decision about continuing to use it; battery settings do not change the support situation. Reduce power use on a Mac laptop
- Enable Low Power Mode. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery, then choose Low Power Mode if the option is available. It is intended for situations where longer runtime matters more than peak performance. Options vary by Mac. Apple’s Mac battery settings guide describes the available controls.
- Dim the display and close unneeded apps. Lower brightness and quit apps you are not using, particularly those doing ongoing work.
- Unplug unused accessories. Disconnect peripherals that you do not need during the session.
- Review other battery settings. Depending on the Mac, Battery settings may include dimming on battery, graphics switching, energy modes, and battery usage history. Use the available controls that fit your workload.
Extend battery health over time
Runtime and battery health are different. Power-saving settings help the laptop use its current charge more slowly. They do not recover capacity already lost through battery aging. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with use, and high temperatures can permanently reduce it. Microsoft recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges, keeping charge in a moderate range when practical, and enabling Smart charging if the device supports it. Treat a moderate range as general care, not a rigid charging rule: suitable features and routines vary by laptop. See Microsoft’s battery-care guidance.

Use a USB-C power bank only after checking compatibility
A USB-C Power Delivery (PD) power bank can add runtime for some laptops, but USB-C alone does not mean a laptop can charge through that port. Check your exact model’s manual or specifications before buying or connecting one.
- Confirm the laptop supports charging through USB-C PD, and identify the port that accepts power.
- Check the laptop’s required input wattage against the power bank’s output from a single port under load.
- Use a cable rated for the required power. Insufficient wattage or an unsuitable cable can prevent charging or cause repeated connection cycling.
- Consider capacity and portability for your needs; no one power-bank capacity or wattage is suitable for every laptop.
Manufacturer guidance makes compatibility model-specific: MSI’s USB-C PD power-bank guidance and ASUS’s notebook charging guidance both direct readers to verify supported models and charging requirements. ASUS also notes power-bank use for supported notebooks and light workloads.
