You can often keep your current iPhone useful longer by reducing battery wear, managing daily power use, and replacing an aged battery when that makes more sense than buying a new phone. “Battery lifespan” means how long the battery remains serviceable; “battery life” means how long it runs between charges. Apple treats these as different measures. Skipping iPhone 18 is a personal value decision, not a rule: keep your phone if it still meets your needs, and compare service and upgrade costs when it does not.
How to reduce long-term battery wear
Charging settings and temperature are the two practical areas to focus on. They can help slow battery aging, but they cannot prevent it entirely.
Set a Charge Limit or use Optimized Battery Charging
On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Charging. Choose a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. Leaving the limit at 100% lets Optimized Battery Charging manage charging instead. Apple says this feature learns your routine and delays charging past 80% in certain situations. It may need at least 14 days to learn and at least nine charges of five hours or more in a location before it engages, so do not expect it to work immediately. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to manage Optimized Battery Charging. A lower limit can mean less time at a full charge, but it also leaves you with less charge available each day. Pick a limit that fits your routine rather than setting it so low that it regularly leaves you short.

Keep the phone away from excessive heat
Apple says iPhone works best in ambient temperatures of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F), and exposure above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery capacity. Apple describes 16–22°C (62–72°F) as an ideal comfort zone. If the phone gets hot while charging in a case, remove the case. Cold can temporarily shorten runtime; normal operation can return after the battery warms back into its usual temperature range. (Apple: Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan)
Store an iPhone properly if you will not use it
For long-term storage, Apple recommends powering the device down near 50% charge and keeping it in a cool, dry place. If storage lasts more than six months, recharge it to 50% every six months. This is storage guidance, not a rule for everyday charging. (Apple: Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan)

How to get more time between charges
Start by finding what is consuming power on your own phone instead of turning off features at random.
- Open Settings > Battery and review battery use by app and background activity. If one app is using more power than expected, check whether it is active in the background or whether its usage reflects how much you used it.
- Dim the display or enable Auto-Brightness in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness.
- Use Wi-Fi when practical. Apple identifies poor cellular signal as a drain; in a low-signal area, Airplane Mode can save power, but it also disables calls and cellular connectivity.
- Turn on Low Power Mode when you need the remaining charge to last longer. It reduces or disables some background activity and features, so use it as a runtime trade-off rather than a battery repair.
On supported iPhones running iOS 26, Apple describes Adaptive Power for high-use days and a redesigned Battery interface with daily usage and app information. Availability depends on the device and software version; do not assume these features appear on every iPhone. (Apple: iOS 26)

How to check whether the battery is wearing out
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health or, depending on model and software, Battery Health & Charging. This is where you can check battery condition and see whether iOS recommends service. On iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later, Apple says this screen can show maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacture date, first-use date, and whether replacement is recommended. Maximum capacity is a measure of current capacity relative to when the battery was new; it is not a direct prediction of how many hours your phone will last. Your actual runtime also depends on use, charging, apps, signal, and other conditions. Apple’s design targets are 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions for iPhone 14 and earlier, and after 1,000 cycles under ideal conditions for iPhone 15 models. These are design targets, not a guarantee for an individual phone or a universal rule for when to replace it. (Apple: iPhone battery service)

Should you replace the battery or buy a new iPhone?
A battery replacement can extend the useful life of a phone that otherwise still works well. Consider your phone’s actual runtime and battery condition, whether it still meets your performance and software needs, the local service cost and availability, the new phone’s cost, and the features you would gain by upgrading.

Apple’s service guidance is available through its battery service page; available options and prices can vary by region. Avoid deciding from battery capacity alone: a phone with a degraded battery may still suit you after service, while a phone with adequate battery health may be due for replacement for other reasons.

What iPhone 18 battery claims can—and cannot—tell you
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Apple claims up to 36 hours of video playback for eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for eSIM-only Pro Max, and describes up to 30 hours of usage on a full charge for Pro Max under its usage model. These are Apple figures based on preproduction devices and a representative usage profile, not independent test results; an individual’s results can differ. (Apple Newsroom, September 9, 2026)
Those claims provide context if you are comparing models, but they do not answer whether your current phone is worth keeping. If it still handles your daily tasks, check its battery condition and compare a local replacement quote with the cost and features of upgrading. Apple’s battery guidance does not establish a single number of years that every iPhone should last.
