If by “receiver” you mean your audio/video receiver (AVR), start with HDMI-CEC: enable it on the TV and AVR, connect the devices by HDMI, and turn on the AVR’s TV power-sync option if available. If you mean the DIRECTV receiver—the Genie, Genie Mini, Gemini, or another set-top box—that is a different device. The steps below are for making the AVR or soundbar turn on with your TV and DIRECTV equipment.
How the one-button setup works
HDMI-CEC lets compatible devices send control commands over HDMI, including power and input changes. Manufacturers use different names for it, and compatible devices do not always behave identically. ARC/eARC is different: it carries audio from the TV to an audio system. It does not, by itself, guarantee that the AVR will power on; power synchronization generally depends on CEC.
For the clearest source-switching arrangement, connect DIRECTV to the AVR, then connect the AVR to the TV:
DIRECTV HDMI OUT → AVR HDMI IN → AVR HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN

Use the TV and AVR ports labeled ARC or eARC if you also want sound from TV apps to return to the AVR. DIRECTV recommends HDMI for connecting its receiver to a TV and says to select the corresponding TV HDMI input; its guidance is at DIRECTV’s receiver connection instructions.
An alternative is to connect DIRECTV to the TV and connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the AVR. That can work, but the TV is then doing the source switching, so power and input behavior depend more on the TV, AVR, DIRECTV model, HDMI ports, and software.

Set up HDMI-CEC on the TV and AVR
- Check the HDMI path. Connect DIRECTV to an AVR HDMI input and the AVR’s HDMI output to the TV. If using TV audio return, connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the AVR’s ARC/eARC output. Use HDMI rather than separate analog or component connections when possible.
- Enable CEC on the TV. In the TV’s settings, look under HDMI, external devices, device connections, or control. Turn on HDMI-CEC and device or auto power control. Enable ARC/eARC too if TV audio needs to return to the AVR. Menu names and paths vary by model.
- Enable HDMI control on the AVR. Turn on HDMI Control or HDMI-CEC and, if available, the option named TV Audio Control, power sync, or auto power on. Enable ARC/eARC if needed. Sony, for example, calls an HDMI-control setting
CTRL.HDMIin documentation for the STR-DH590: Sony receiver HDMI-control guidance. - Set the AVR input. Assign the HDMI port carrying DIRECTV to a recognizable source such as CBL/SAT, SAT/CBL, or HDMI 1. Use the port you actually connected; there is no universal “correct” HDMI number.
- Check DIRECTV device settings. If your box exposes a setting for HDMI control, CEC, power control, or device control, enable it. Not every DIRECTV model offers a user-accessible CEC setting, so do not assume the option exists.
- Restart the HDMI chain. Turn off the TV, AVR, and DIRECTV box, unplug each from power for about a minute, then reconnect the HDMI cables. Turn on the TV, then AVR, then DIRECTV box, and test power and input switching. This is a practical reset, not a manufacturer-mandated timing requirement.
Some AVR controls are independent. HDMI control, ARC/eARC, and standby pass-through may each have their own setting. Onkyo’s TX-NR5100 documentation distinguishes HDMI CEC from HDMI standby/pass-through: Onkyo HDMI hardware settings. Standby-through can pass video while the AVR remains in standby; it does not mean the receiver has powered on. Yamaha manuals describe receiver-side HDMI Control setup for synchronized TV and component control: Yamaha HTR-7065 manual.
Find your TV’s CEC setting
These are common feature names, not guaranteed menu paths. Check the manual for your exact model if the setting is not obvious. Sony describes CEC functions such as device power and volume control, and documents BRAVIA Sync and Auto TV Power On: Sony BRAVIA Sync and HDMI-CEC overview.

Check the AVR’s HDMI-control options
On the AVR, look for HDMI Control, HDMI-CEC, TV Audio Control, power sync, or an equivalent setting. If you use TV audio return, enable ARC/eARC at both ends and select the AVR’s TV audio or ARC/eARC input as needed. Enable HDMI pass-through only if you want the DIRECTV picture to reach the TV while the AVR is in standby; that setting is separate from powering the AVR on.
Use the DIRECTV remote if CEC is unreliable
Programming the DIRECTV remote is separate from HDMI-CEC. The remote can send commands directly to the TV and, if the remote and AVR are compatible, to the audio system. Power and volume assignments may be separate, so test each function rather than assuming that working volume control means AVR power is programmed too.

- Use the remote setup or programming process for your particular DIRECTV remote to configure the TV.
- Run audio-device programming for the AVR or soundbar, if the remote supports it.
- Where available, set volume control to the audio receiver rather than the TV.
- Test the remote’s power command and volume command separately. If power does not work, repeat the audio-device programming process or try a supported device code.
For Gemini, a DIRECTV community response describes a path similar to Home → Settings → System → Remote & Devices → Program Your Remote, including volume-control selection. Menu wording can vary by device and software version; look for equivalent remote-programming and volume-control options if that path is absent: DIRECTV community discussion of Gemini remote settings. DIRECTV’s older RC65RB guide documents a combined power function for the TV and DIRECTV receiver, but that does not establish that every remote can control every AVR: RC65RB Universal Remote Control User Guide.
Choose a fallback that fits the problem
- Use CEC if the TV and AVR support it and you want automatic power and input switching through HDMI. It is convenient, but device behavior can be inconsistent.
- Program the existing DIRECTV remote if it supports your AVR and you want to avoid CEC power or input changes.
- Use a universal remote macro if you need a predictable sequence or the DIRECTV remote cannot control the AVR. A sample sequence is TV Power On → AVR Power On → DIRECTV Power On → AVR Input CBL/SAT → TV Input for the AVR. Add delays if a device needs time to wake. Macros can miss commands or mis-handle devices already on.
- Consider an IR blaster or smart-home hub if your equipment exposes reliable IR or network control and you want a scene such as “Watch DIRECTV.” This adds setup and another potential failure point; IR also depends on a usable path to the device.
Troubleshoot the symptom
The TV turns on, but the AVR stays off
- Confirm CEC is on at both the TV and AVR; turning on ARC/eARC alone may not enable device power control.
- Check that the HDMI connection uses ports and a path that support CEC. An HDMI switch or soundbar in the chain can interfere.
- Look for a separate auto-power, power-sync, or TV audio-control option on the AVR.
- If the AVR is in a low-power mode, check whether that mode disables HDMI control.
- If the AVR lacks compatible TV-to-receiver power synchronization, use remote programming or a macro instead.
The AVR turns on but shows “No Signal” or the wrong input
- Verify the AVR input assignment and select the input connected to DIRECTV.
- Check which device is switching sources: the AVR in the recommended wiring, or the TV in the alternative arrangement.
- Confirm the DIRECTV box is awake and its HDMI cable is seated; try another suitable HDMI input if needed.
- Check whether the AVR’s last-input behavior overrides automatic source selection.
The picture works but sound comes from the TV
- Set the TV audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC or external audio system.
- Confirm ARC/eARC is enabled at both the TV and AVR, and select the AVR’s TV-audio input if required.
- Check that the AVR is not muted and is using the intended zone and input.
The DIRECTV remote controls volume but not AVR power
Volume and power may be programmed independently. Re-run audio-device programming and test the AVR’s power command separately; compatibility depends on the remote model, device code, and AVR.

The AVR turns on unexpectedly or the system turns off at the wrong time
CEC can trigger power changes when a device wakes or changes state. If DIRECTV activity unexpectedly wakes a surround receiver, a DIRECTV community troubleshooting response recommends disabling CEC on the DIRECTV box and AVR: DIRECTV community CEC troubleshooting. If the equipment allows it, disable automatic power-off while leaving other CEC features enabled. Otherwise, turn CEC off and use explicit remote commands or a macro.
The AVR works only after the TV is already on
This can result from HDMI handshake timing, standby-through configuration, the TV issuing a CEC command only after it detects an active source, a slow-waking DIRECTV box, or an HDMI cable or switch that does not pass CEC reliably. Test with the TV and AVR connected directly, then add DIRECTV back to the chain to identify where control stops.
Account for wireless DIRECTV equipment
A wireless Genie Mini or Gemini may communicate with other DIRECTV equipment wirelessly while still using a local HDMI connection to its TV. That wireless relationship does not itself control AVR power; CEC or a programmed remote must still handle the local audio system. DIRECTV’s setup guidance distinguishes the wireless connection from the device’s HDMI connection to the TV: DIRECTV Genie and Gemini setup guidance. For Gemini device connections and HDMI source considerations, see DIRECTV Gemini connection help.
Quick Recap
Final setup check
- DIRECTV is connected to the intended HDMI input on the AVR, or to the TV if the TV is acting as the switch.
- The AVR output and TV input are connected; ARC/eARC ports are used when TV audio return is needed.
- CEC and the AVR’s auto-power or synchronization option are enabled where available.
- The AVR is assigned to the correct DIRECTV input.
- The DIRECTV remote is programmed separately if using it to control AVR power or volume.
- The devices have been power-cycled and tested for power, input selection, picture, and sound.
