Use --window-status when the page can signal that its required asynchronous content is ready; use --javascript-delay for a fixed, approximate pause. JavaScript is enabled by default in the documented command-line tool. A delay does not prove that application work has finished, and the documentation does not define a universal timeout for a status value that never appears.
Choose a readiness strategy
| Option | What triggers printing | Best suited to | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
--window-status <value> |
window.status equals the supplied value |
A page you control that can set a ready marker after its required asynchronous rendering | The documentation does not specify a timeout if the marker never appears. Historical reports describe hangs and context-sensitive behavior. |
--javascript-delay <msec> |
The configured elapsed time after page load | A page whose render time is predictable enough for a bounded pause | Too short may capture incomplete content; too long wastes time. It is not a signal that arbitrary application work has finished. |
The wkhtmltopdf usage documentation lists 200 ms as the default JavaScript delay. That is a configuration default, not a guarantee that a page’s scripts or data requests will finish within that time. See the wkhtmltopdf usage reference.
Wait for an explicit page-ready marker
If you can change the page, assign a distinctive value to window.status only after the asynchronous work and DOM updates required in the PDF are complete. Then give that exact value to wkhtmltopdf:
<script>
// Set this only after required data and DOM updates are complete.
window.status = 'pdf-ready';
</script>
wkhtmltopdf --window-status pdf-ready input.html output.pdf
For a real application, put the assignment in the success path after the relevant data has been fetched and rendered—not immediately when the initial HTML loads. If the application can fail to fetch or render the required content, decide how that failure should be handled rather than setting the ready marker unconditionally.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the marker string identical in the page and command. Because the command relies on page JavaScript to assign it, do not pass --disable-javascript.
Use a fixed delay when a signal is unavailable
If you cannot add a readiness marker, set a post-load pause in milliseconds. For example, this waits two seconds:

wkhtmltopdf --javascript-delay 2000 input.html output.pdf
Choose a delay from observed rendering behavior and allow margin for ordinary variation. A fixed delay is inherently approximate: if the page takes longer than the pause, the PDF can still be incomplete; if it finishes earlier, wkhtmltopdf waits unnecessarily. The documented default is 200 ms, so set an explicit value when that default is not appropriate.

Using the library interface
The libwkhtmltox documentation exposes the analogous load.jsdelay setting for waiting after page load. It also describes printing when JavaScript calls window.print(). JavaScript enablement is controlled by web.enableJavascript. Consult the libwkhtmltox page settings reference for the interface and setting details.

Do not treat --run-script as a completion signal
The command-line documentation says --run-script runs extra JavaScript after the page is done loading. It does not promise to wait for application-specific asynchronous rendering initiated by that script. Use a page-controlled readiness marker or a delay where appropriate; do not assume running a script means its asynchronous work has finished.
Combining delay and status options
The official option descriptions do not establish how --javascript-delay and --window-status interact when both are supplied, nor do they specify a universal timeout for an unmet status. A historical report for version 0.12.2.1 describes one user’s observation that the longer wait applied, but that is not a cross-version contract. Prefer one clear readiness strategy and validate the exact executable and input page you deploy.

Troubleshoot incomplete PDFs or a command that does not finish
- JavaScript content is missing: Check that JavaScript has not been disabled and that your delay is long enough, or move the status assignment to after the required asynchronous DOM updates.
- The status wait appears to be ignored or never ends: Confirm the page assigns the exact status string, including capitalization, and that the assignment runs on the page loaded by wkhtmltopdf. Since the documentation does not specify an unmet-marker timeout, do not assume the command will recover automatically.
- Behavior differs between machines or command layouts: Record the wkhtmltopdf version and build, whether it uses patched Qt, the complete command and option placement, and the input page. Historical issue reports describe differing outcomes; they are not guarantees for other versions.
- The command uses a table of contents or multiple page objects: Test that precise input structure. Historical reports describe cases where table-of-contents placement and status handling affected observed behavior, including a report involving a 0.12.3 setup.
- A delay works sometimes but not consistently: Treat it as a timing estimate, not a completion check. Increase the margin if you must use a delay, or add an explicit marker if you control the page.
Historical reports are useful for identifying cases to test, but they do not establish universal behavior. The wkhtmltopdf repository is archived, and no current supported release or live-binary test is established here; verify the behavior of the exact build you operate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does wkhtmltopdf run JavaScript by default?
Yes. JavaScript is enabled by default in the documented command-line tool; the --disable-javascript option turns it off.
Can I use --window-status for content I do not control?
Only if the page sets the exact status value you provide. If it does not expose a usable readiness marker, a fixed delay is the available approximation described here.
