To make a website thumbnail in dark mode, set Chrome’s DevTools to emulate prefers-color-scheme: dark, reload the page, then capture it. This shows the site’s own dark styling if it supports that preference. If it does not, Chrome’s separate Automatic dark mode can generate a dark appearance, but that is not necessarily the site’s designed theme.
Choose which kind of dark thumbnail you need
There are two different results you might mean by “dark mode”:
- The website’s authored dark theme: The page responds to the browser’s dark color-scheme preference with styles designed by the site.
- A browser-generated dark appearance: Chrome applies Automatic dark mode to a light-themed page. This can be useful for a preview, but it should not be presented as the site’s own dark design.
Emulating prefers-color-scheme: dark requests a dark preference; it does not create dark styles for a site that has none. Chrome describes prefers-color-scheme as indicating whether the user prefers a light or dark color scheme. Chrome DevTools: Emulate CSS media features.
Make a one-off dark thumbnail in Chrome
- Open the target webpage in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Open the DevTools Rendering panel. If it is not visible, open the DevTools command menu and search for “Show Rendering.”
- In Emulate CSS media feature, choose
prefers-color-scheme: dark. - Reload the page. Reloading gives the page’s CSS and scripts a chance to respond to the emulated preference.
- Check that the page has changed to the intended theme, then use Chrome’s screenshot workflow to capture the visible viewport or the page area you need.
For a light-themed page without a dark theme, Chrome DevTools also documents Automatic dark mode, which generates a dark rendering for inspection. Use it only when a browser-generated treatment is what you want; it is not equivalent to a site-authored dark theme. The DevTools rendering controls are documented at Emulate CSS media features.

Automate repeatable captures with Puppeteer
For recurring thumbnails, batches, or a visual-check workflow, Puppeteer can capture pages in both light and dark mode. Google’s example uses a dark-mode-screenshot script with --fullPage and --pause 750; these are example options, not universal settings. The right capture area and wait condition depend on the page. See web.dev’s prefers-color-scheme guide for the example and implementation context.
Keep the URL, viewport, page state, and capture timing consistent between runs. If a page depends on a login, interaction, or delayed content, reproduce that state before capturing; an arbitrary pause may not be enough for every site.

Set up the page for comparable results
- Use the same viewport dimensions for every thumbnail in a set.
- Apply the dark preference before the page is captured, and confirm the page actually responds to it.
- Use a consistent load condition or explicit wait for the content you need.
- Make the same choices about full-page versus viewport-only capture each time.
Check the thumbnail before publishing
- Theme: Confirm the output is the site’s authored dark theme or clearly treat it as a browser-generated appearance.
- Readability: Review text, links, controls, and small labels at the thumbnail’s displayed size.
- Images and icons: Check that logos, photos, and vector icons remain legible against the changed background. Image treatment may need to differ between photography and icons; see the image guidance in web.dev’s guide.
- Browser-rendered UI: Inspect form controls and scrollbars if they appear in the capture. The CSS

Support dark mode in a website you control
If you are making the site rather than just capturing it, define dark-theme colors in response to prefers-color-scheme. Google recommends letting the default follow the system preference and offering a user override when the site has a manual theme control. Use color-scheme where appropriate so browser-rendered controls can adapt too. The page stays light after dark emulation
Check that the Rendering panel is set to prefers-color-scheme: dark and reload. If the page still appears light, it may not provide dark styles for that preference. Automatic dark mode is a separate Chrome-generated rendering option.

Parts of the page remain hard to read
Inspect images, icons, controls, and browser-rendered UI as well as text and backgrounds. Dark appearance does not guarantee every asset has been designed for a dark surface.

Automated thumbnails differ between runs
Standardize the viewport, URL, page state, and capture timing. Pages with delayed or interactive content may need a condition tied to the content rather than a fixed pause.
