Make each thumbnail from the travel blog’s homepage using the same browser viewport, then crop or resize it to fit your directory card. A consistent capture helps readers scan the directory; the right pixel dimensions depend on the card your site actually displays, not on a universal standard.
Choose what each thumbnail should show
For a travel blog directory, a website thumbnail is a small preview of the blog itself—not a travel photograph illustrating an individual article. Capture the homepage’s identifying first-screen content: ideally its masthead, navigation, and a recognizable image or headline. A viewport capture usually makes directory cards easier to compare than a full-page image, but use a full-page capture if readers need to see more of the site.
Keep the presentation neutral. A preview should identify the site, not suggest that its author endorses or partners with your directory.
Capture homepages consistently
Set one viewport for the directory
Choose a browser width and height and use the same values for every site. The exact values are a design decision: preview the capture at the size your directory cards will display, then adjust until the homepage’s identifying content remains legible. There is no established universal pixel size for travel-blog-directory thumbnails.

Use a browser or a screenshot API
You can open each homepage in a browser, set the chosen viewport, capture the visible page, and save the image. For many entries, a screenshot API can make repeated captures easier to standardize. Screenshots.Dev documents URL or HTML capture, image dimensions, and full-page control; those documented options do not constitute a comparison of providers. See its API documentation and check the service’s current functionality and terms before relying on it.
Whichever method you use, inspect the output. Sites may render differently at the same dimensions, and a capture can miss a useful identifying element or show a temporary overlay.

Crop and resize for the directory card
Start with the actual display area in your directory. Keep a consistent aspect ratio across cards, or apply the same crop to each capture. Check every reduced preview: a uniform crop can still cut off a distinctive logo, headline, or image. Resize the saved image for its display purpose rather than serving a needlessly large original. WordPress’s guidance explains that image dimensions and file size should suit the intended display, and that resizing can affect focus (Image size and quality).
If you use WordPress, its documented defaults include thumbnail at a maximum of 150 × 150 px, medium at 300 × 300 px, medium-large at 768 px wide with no height limit, and large at a maximum of 1024 × 1024 px. These are configurable defaults, not recommendations for your directory: settings can change and themes can register custom sizes. WordPress supports custom featured-image sizes and crop options; see Featured Images & Post Thumbnails and the Settings Media screen.

Serve a suitable image to each screen
For a WordPress directory, responsive image support can emit srcset and sizes so the browser can choose from generated image candidates. Google also recommends responsive image markup such as srcset or <picture>, with a fallback URL in src. See the WordPress responsive images documentation and Google Image SEO Best Practices.
Write useful alternative text that explains what the image represents, for example, “Homepage preview of [blog name].” Do not turn alt text into a list of search keywords. WordPress describes a featured image as an image representing an individual post, page, or custom post type; a directory can use that mechanism for its blog previews (WordPress Developer Resources).
Keep the directory’s previews maintainable
Save the source homepage URL and capture date with each directory entry. This makes it easier to identify the source and refresh the image when a blog redesigns, changes its homepage, or disappears. There is no source-established ideal refresh interval, so choose one that fits your editorial workload and revisit entries when you have a reason to suspect a preview is stale.

A screenshot of another blog may reproduce its logo, photographs, or other protected material. The available sources do not establish an India-specific legal rule for publishing these screenshots, and taking a screenshot does not by itself establish permission to republish it. Check the site’s terms and applicable law, and seek permission where appropriate. The WordPress Photo Directory’s requirement that its contributors hold rights and submit photos under CC0 applies to that directory’s submissions; it is not a general license for third-party website screenshots (Photo Directory guidelines).

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can capture a URL as an image or PDF; use a consistent viewport and choose the output and capture options that suit your directory. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace https://stripe.com with a blog homepage URL and provide your API key. The call saves the response as shot.webp; set the required capture options for your chosen dimensions and output.
Quick Recap
ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
