Set a consistent thumbnail specification
Use the company website’s listing URL as the capture input. For directory cards, a fixed viewport is usually easier to compare than full-page images: it gives each entry a similar frame and avoids making long pages look disproportionately tall. Capture the full page only when the whole page is itself useful to a reader.
- Choose one viewport for all entries, then set a consistent display ratio in the directory card.
- Save each image against a stable listing identifier, not a company name that might change.
- Choose pixel dimensions to suit your own card layout. The available documentation does not establish an ideal universal size.
- Check the image at its actual card size; a capture that looks good at full resolution may not communicate well when scaled down.

For a site that keeps network connections open, networkidle may not arrive; switch to an appropriate load condition or wait for a specific selector instead of letting the job run indefinitely.

Optimize images for card delivery
WebP and AVIF may compress better than PNG or JPEG, reducing image size and download time; the outcome depends on the image and delivery context. Choose a format your delivery stack and target browsers support, and inspect the actual thumbnail after conversion. Do not assume a fixed percentage of savings. web.dev’s guidance on serving WebP images discusses modern image formats and delivery.
Keep the stored image’s framing and the card’s display ratio aligned. If the layout crops an image, verify that the product name or recognizable page content remains visible at the rendered size.

Store and refresh captures
Store outputs in a predictable location keyed by listing ID, and keep the source URL and capture time in your directory data if you need to audit or refresh them. A simple refresh policy is to capture when a listing is created and when an operator requests an update. Website content and availability can change, so a thumbnail should not be treated as a permanent record of the current page.
Run capture jobs outside the request that accepts a new listing. A slow, broken, or unreachable website should not hold up the directory’s normal submission flow. Use a controlled queue with timeouts, resource limits, and bounded retries, and check the resulting image and page metadata after capture. A technically completed screenshot may still show a parked domain or irrelevant page.
Some providers describe caching, forced-fresh options, metadata retrieval, or checks for parked, 404, and unreachable pages. Those are provider-described capabilities rather than independently established service comparisons; confirm the current behavior, limits, and failure reporting with the provider before relying on them.

Protect the capture service from unsafe URLs
When a server visits a URL supplied by a directory submitter, the renderer becomes a security boundary. An attacker may try to make it request internal or otherwise unintended destinations. OWASP’s Server Side Request Forgery Prevention Cheat Sheet advises validating destinations, preferring allowlists when expected destinations are known, and constraining network access. It warns that complete URLs are difficult to validate safely.

- Validate submitted destinations before they reach a browser worker. If your product can use a known set of destinations, prefer an allowlist.
- Constrain worker network access so a page capture cannot reach internal services or other prohibited destinations.
- Apply timeouts and resource limits, and isolate capture jobs from the web request that accepts a listing.
- Review target URLs and resulting pages; a successful capture does not prove that the page represents the submitted company.
- If you send URLs to a managed renderer, review that provider’s handling of URLs and security controls.
