Make a website screenshot accessible by choosing alternative text that reflects its purpose in context. Use concise alt text for information the screenshot uniquely conveys, alt="" when it is decorative or redundant, and an action or destination when the screenshot is a link or control. For a complex screen, pair a short alt description with the important details in nearby text or a table.
Decide what the screenshot contributes
Before writing alt text, ask what a person who cannot see the image needs to understand or do on this page. The same screenshot may need different treatment in different contexts: it can be informative in one article and redundant in another. W3C WAI explains that an image’s text alternative depends on its usage, context, and content (WAI Images Tutorial).
- Informative: State the essential message, page state, or task-relevant detail that is not already available in adjacent text.
- Decorative or redundant: Use an empty alternative,
alt="", if removing the screenshot would leave the same information and function intact. - Functional: If the screenshot is a link or button, describe what activating it does or where it goes.
- Complex: Identify the image briefly, then provide important values, relationships, or steps in nearby text, a list, or a table.
Write alt text for common screenshot types
Informative screenshots
Keep the alternative focused on the screenshot’s unique contribution. For example, if surrounding text explains how to open a settings page, but the screenshot shows that the “Privacy” tab is selected, alt text could say: Settings page with the Privacy tab selected. Do not describe every visible control if those details are not needed to understand the content.
Decorative or repeated screenshots
If the screenshot adds no information beyond the adjacent text, use alt="". This tells assistive technology that it can skip the image while preserving the image element. Do not omit the alt attribute on an informative screenshot; an absent attribute is not the same as an intentionally empty one. WAI’s first-review guidance distinguishes missing alternatives from appropriate empty alternatives (WAI Easy Checks).

Screenshots containing text
If words in the image carry meaning or instructions, make that text available as an equivalent. For a short label or brief message, include the meaningful words in the alternative. For substantial copy, put the text in the page itself rather than making readers depend on an image. WAI’s image guidance says that when an image of text is used, its text alternative should contain the same words (WAI: Images of Text).
Clickable screenshots
When the image itself is interactive, describe its purpose rather than only its appearance. A screenshot linking to a live demo might have alt text such as Open the account setup demo. The alternative should help a reader decide whether to activate the link, not merely announce that the image is a screenshot.

Dashboards, charts, and multi-step interfaces
Do not cram a complex screen into a long alt string. Give it a concise identification, then include the useful equivalent in the page: a table for values and comparisons, or prose or a numbered list for a workflow. That keeps the information available to everyone and easier to scan. WAI recommends a short alternative with a detailed description elsewhere for complex images (WAI Easy Checks).
Review the result in context
- Read the surrounding content without the screenshot. Identify which information or function would otherwise be missing.
- Draft the alternative around that gap. Describe the unique information, the control’s purpose, or the destination—not incidental visual details.
- Check for duplication. If nearby text already conveys everything needed, use
alt="". If an image contains meaningful words, make them available in text. - For complex content, verify the equivalent. Confirm that the nearby description, list, or table includes the key steps, relationships, or values shown.
- Use an automated check for missing attributes, then inspect manually. A scan can flag missing
alt, but it cannot judge whether the wording is appropriate. WAI says that judging an alternative requires seeing the image and considering its context (WAI Easy Checks).
What alt text does—and does not—establish about conformance
WAI’s image tutorial connects its guidance with WCAG success criterion 1.1.1, Non-text Content (Level A), 1.4.5, Images of Text (Level AA), and 1.4.9, Images of Text (No Exception) (Level AAA). These are distinct criteria and conformance cannot be established just by adding one alt string. The reviewed WCAG 2.1 Recommendation describes its criteria as testable and technology-independent and discusses combining automated tests with human evaluation (WCAG 2.1 Recommendation). That link is specifically to version 2.1; check the current standard and applicable jurisdiction or policy before making a compliance claim. ADA.gov likewise cautions that automated checkers need careful use and that a clean automated report does not establish that everything is accessible (ADA.gov web guidance). This guidance is practical authoring advice, not an audit of a particular website or legal opinion.

If you need a screenshot to document your site before adding it to an article or guide, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. It does not generate alt text or make the final image accessible; choose the alternative according to the screenshot’s purpose on your page. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
