This stops the browser’s direct request to the font service; it does not remove other third-party requests or, by itself, establish compliance with privacy law.
What happens when a page loads a remote web font?
A common font-loading flow starts with the browser requesting a stylesheet from a font service; that stylesheet points the browser to one or more font files. Google describes this sequence in its technical documentation. The font provider therefore receives a browser request when the font is fetched.
Google says its servers necessarily receive IP addresses to transmit fonts, and says it does not use the data to create end-user profiles or for advertising. Those are Google’s statements about its own service, not an independent audit of every font provider or a determination of legal compliance. See Google Fonts’ privacy statement.
Self-hosting means the browser downloads font files from your site’s infrastructure or origin rather than directly from a font provider. That removes this particular browser-to-font-provider request. It does not prevent other third parties embedded on your pages from receiving requests.

How to self-host fonts
- Find every font source. Inspect page markup, CSS, theme and plugin settings, and the browser’s network panel. Look for external font stylesheets and font-file requests; checking only one page may miss fonts used by other templates.
- Confirm the license. Check the actual license for each font and confirm that it permits your intended web use and hosting method. Do not assume a font can be copied or redistributed just because it is visible on a website. Monotype’s web-font implementation reference discusses licensing boundaries, but the font’s applicable license governs.
- Put permitted files on your own origin. Add the font files to your site’s infrastructure and define their paths in your CSS. Use formats and file paths that match the files you have. Include a suitable generic or system fallback so text can still be rendered if the web font is unavailable; Google’s getting-started guide also recommends a generic fallback family.
- Limit what you deliver. Include only the typefaces, weights, styles, and character ranges the site uses. Subsetting can reduce transferred bytes, but verify that the chosen character coverage supports the languages and glyphs your visitors need. - Choose a loading behavior. Set
font-displaydeliberately in your font-face CSS. Options such asswap,fallback, andoptionalaffect how long fallback text is shown and whether the web font replaces it when available. The right choice depends on the design and how much visual change is acceptable. Chrome documents the options in its font-display guidance. - Verify the deployed pages. In a clean browser session, load representative pages and inspect the network panel. Confirm that neither the external font stylesheet nor the provider’s font files are requested. Repeat for pages and templates that may use different font families; changing one stylesheet does not establish that the entire site is free of remote font requests.
Self-hosting does not guarantee privacy-law compliance
Serving fonts locally is a technical measure that can reduce a specific disclosure. It is not a legal safe harbor and does not settle what obligations apply to the rest of a site’s data collection or third-party services. The European Commission’s GDPR principles overview says organizations remain responsible for compliance and must be able to demonstrate it.
The Bavarian data protection authority discusses externally hosted and self-hosted fonts, including consent context, on its external fonts page. For a question about a particular jurisdiction or implementation, consult current regulator guidance and qualified legal advice rather than treating local font hosting as a universal compliance answer.

Balance privacy, performance, and maintenance
Self-hosting changes where the browser gets a font; it does not guarantee a faster page. Actual performance depends on file size, caching, server configuration, connection setup, preload choices, and how fonts behave while loading. Compare your own pages using representative devices and network conditions rather than assuming one delivery method always wins.

Keep these checks in mind when changing font files or stylesheets later: a theme update, new plugin, or added language can introduce another font request or make a subset incomplete. Recheck the live page after changes that affect typography.
