For ordinary words, keep the underlying text as regular letters and create the cursive look with CSS. Avoid replacing letters with script-like Unicode symbols: those are different characters intended for mathematical or technical notation, and screen readers may not announce them as ordinary words. For real mathematics, preserve meaningful letter styles and use semantic math markup such as MathML on the web.
Why Unicode cursive can be hard to read aloud
“Unicode cursive” often means text made from script-looking characters that resemble ordinary Latin letters. These are not ordinary letters displayed in a cursive font; they are separate encoded characters, often selected from Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, U+1D400–U+1D7FF.
The Unicode Standard says these characters are intended for mathematical or technical notation, not nontechnical text. In mathematics, a styled letter can identify a distinct variable or concept. In ordinary prose, substituting those characters for regular letters can make words less predictable for screen readers, copying, searching, and other text handling. A character having a Unicode value does not ensure that assistive technology will pronounce it as the author intends.
Unicode characters in this block have compatibility decompositions to base Latin and Greek letters. That does not make the styled characters unsuitable for mathematics: converting them to base letters can erase distinctions that matter in an equation. The right approach depends on whether the text is prose or notation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For ordinary words, style regular text instead
- Replace decorative characters with ordinary letters. Keep genuine punctuation and any actual language or script content intact; change only the decorative substitutes.
- Apply the appearance in markup and CSS. For example, write
<span class="script-style">ordinary text</span>and style that span visually. The accessible text remains the same ordinary words. - Check where the text is used. Headings, links, buttons, and form labels should retain meaningful words. Also check that copied text and search or indexing behavior are useful.
- Explain meaning in text or structure. If the cursive treatment signals something beyond appearance, convey that meaning in words or appropriate structure too.
Do not use an ARIA label as a blanket repair for text whose underlying characters are wrong. Fix the text itself, then use semantic markup where it is needed.
For mathematics, preserve the distinctions
Do not replace mathematical script or other styled alphanumeric characters with plain letters just to make them easier to pronounce. In an equation, styling can distinguish variables with different meanings. Normalizing or flattening those characters indiscriminately may remove that information.

For web equations, use MathML rather than presenting an equation as decorative text. Section 508 guidance describes MathML as machine-readable markup that preserves mathematical structure and meaning, can scale and reflow, and can support navigation through an expression term by term. The actual experience still depends on the browser and assistive-technology implementation, so test the target environment.
For documents, use the equation and accessibility features appropriate to the authoring format, and test the exported document. Section 508 warns that Word equations and even expressions assembled from Unicode characters may not be read as intended by assistive technology.

Test the result with assistive technology
- Inspect the underlying characters. For prose, verify that the string contains ordinary letters rather than script-like mathematical code points. Do not judge by appearance alone.
- Test a relevant screen reader and browser combination. Include mobile assistive technology if people will use the content on mobile devices.
- Check the whole interaction. Confirm that links and controls announce meaningful names, copied text remains readable, and equations retain useful structure.
- Record the setup. Note the screen reader, browser, and versions tested. There is no universal pronunciation guarantee based solely on Unicode encoding, and behavior can vary.
Section 508 gives a specific example: NVDA reads 2+6=8 as “2 plus 6 equals 8,” but reads (2+6)² as “2 plus 6 2,” rather than “parenthesis 2 plus 6 parenthesis squared.” This example shows why correct character encoding alone may not communicate equation grouping; it is not a claim about every screen reader or configuration.
