If your Birkenstocks feel too tight, first open and comfortably readjust the straps, then check that your foot sits correctly on the footbed. A new pair that otherwise fits may become more comfortable with short, gradual wear at home. If pressure persists, reassess the size or width rather than trying to stretch the sandal: BIRKENSTOCK’s cited guidance does not recommend stretching tools, sprays or heat, and heat can damage cork and EVA components.
Check whether the sandal fits your foot
Stand with your foot placed naturally on the footbed. Your toes should not touch its edge; BIRKENSTOCK’s US fit guide suggests aiming for about ¼ inch of space around the foot. That is brand guidance, not a guarantee that every style will suit every foot. BIRKENSTOCK US Fit and Size Guide
Also consider width. The US guide describes regular width as suitable for medium-to-wide feet and narrow width as suitable for narrow-to-medium feet. BIRKENSTOCK’s UK FAQ says noticeable space at the sides may indicate that narrow is a better fit, while your feet should not slide up the sides of the footbed. If a sandal remains uncomfortably tight after placement and strap adjustments, check its size and width; break-in cannot be assumed to correct a mismatch. BIRKENSTOCK UK FAQ
Adjust the straps before wearing them
- Open all the straps before putting the sandals on.
- Set your foot on the footbed, then fasten the straps so they feel comfortable rather than tight.
- Check for pressure points and readjust if needed. BIRKENSTOCK’s US guide advises keeping straps loose at first to help avoid pressure points.
BIRKENSTOCK’s care guidance suggests about 5 mm of space between the front strap and the foot and about 10 mm at the second strap, with adjustment as needed. Treat those measurements as brand guidance, not universal targets for every foot or model. BIRKENSTOCK product-care guidance

Break in a new pair gradually
If the placement and fit look right but the sandals are new, start by wearing them at home for an hour or two. Keep the straps loose initially, then increase wear time as comfort improves. BIRKENSTOCK explains that feet adjust to the footbed and that the cork-and-latex footbed flexes and molds with use; it does not promise a set break-in timeline. Why stretching methods can be a poor choice
The cited BIRKENSTOCK guidance does not establish shoe stretchers, sprays or other physical stretching methods as suitable for these sandals. Avoid using a hair dryer, radiator, hot car or another concentrated heat source to try to loosen them: the brand warns that heat or extreme temperatures can damage cork footbeds and EVA soles. Water is not a safe shortcut, either. BIRKENSTOCK says most styles should not be immersed in water. If shoes get wet, let them air-dry slowly away from direct heat. BIRKENSTOCK product-care guidance

BIRKENSTOCK’s UK width FAQ mentions adding holes when a strap remains too loose. That advice addresses excess looseness; it does not make punching a hole a remedy for a strap that feels too tight. BIRKENSTOCK UK FAQ

Choose the next step based on what feels wrong
- Pressure from a strap: Open and readjust it until it feels comfortable, without forcing a tight setting.
- A new footbed feels unfamiliar: Try short periods of wear at home and increase them only as comfort allows.
- Toes touch the edge or the foot feels cramped across the footbed: Recheck the size and width options for your style.
- Discomfort persists: Stop treating it as a break-in problem and reassess whether that pair fits your foot.
