If your Mac’s play/pause key pauses a browser video instead of the music player you meant to control, a media-key router can intercept the key event and send it to a chosen app. It is a software fix for an app-routing problem—not a new keyboard or a Spotify API setting. The exact rules macOS uses to choose a recipient are not established by the Apple documentation cited here, so a router is a practical way to set the target explicitly.
Why the play/pause key may control the wrong app
Mac users have reported cases where browser media responds to the play/pause key while Spotify is playing in the background. A 2018 Spotify Community thread uses the phrase “Keyboard media keys (play/pause) not working” for this sort of complaint, but a forum report describes a user experience; it does not establish a universal macOS routing rule. Apple’s MPMediaPlayback documentation describes controls a media-playing object can implement, including play, pause, stop and seeking. It does not explain how macOS chooses which app receives a physical keyboard media key. The evidence available here therefore does not settle precedence among browser media, the foreground app, active playback sessions and registered handlers.

A router is a utility that intercepts media-key events and forwards commands to a selected player. Two projects illustrate this approach: Mac Media Key Forwarder describes prioritizing iTunes or Spotify from the menu bar, while Mac Media Keys Forwarder describes built-in Spotify and Apple Music support plus custom-app options.

The newer project says it uses a CGEventTap to intercept keys and sends commands through AppleScript or keystroke injection. Its README specifies macOS 13.0 or later and says Accessibility permission is required. These are the project’s own published descriptions, not independent compatibility tests. Check the current release notes and requirements before relying on either utility.
What to check before installing one
- macOS compatibility: Mac Media Keys Forwarder’s README lists macOS 13.0 or later. Confirm the current version supports your installed macOS before downloading.
- Target-player support: Check whether your intended player is built in or can be added as a custom app. Mac Media Key Forwarder describes prioritizing iTunes or Spotify; the newer project describes Spotify, Apple Music and custom apps.
- Permissions: Intercepting keys may require Accessibility permission. The newer project explicitly says it requires it; the older project notes that some older installation setups may also require Accessibility and Automation permissions.
- Key-by-key behavior: The newer project says play/pause stays targeted to the selected app, but next/previous may fall back to normal system routing if that app cannot be controlled directly.
- Edge cases: Mac Media Key Forwarder warns that its event tap can cause issues in rare cases. Review the project’s caveats and instructions before enabling interception.
Why Spotify APIs are not a system-wide fix
Spotify offers playback controls through developer interfaces, but those interfaces operate within Spotify’s documented context; they do not establish a general way to intercept a Mac’s physical media keys. The Start/Resume Playback endpoint targets the user’s active device when no device ID is supplied and is available only to Premium users. The Web Playback SDK provides controls such as pause, resume and togglePlay for its supported browser player, including desktop macOS browsers. Neither replaces a system-level router. Choose the least complicated fix that addresses your case
If the problem is specifically that the physical play/pause key reaches the wrong player, a router that names the desired target is the relevant kind of solution. If you only need to control Spotify from a supported application or browser, Spotify’s own playback interfaces may be sufficient, but they do not solve general macOS key routing. No special keyboard or accessory is needed for the software-routing problem described here.
