To make sugar in Minecraft, place one sugar cane in the crafting grid. Sugar is the output, and no other ingredient is needed. The recipe works in the 2×2 inventory grid as well as the 3×3 crafting table grid, so you do not need a crafting table to make it.
Crafting sugar step by step
- Make sure you have at least one sugar cane in your inventory.
- Open your inventory with the default E key in Java Edition, or open a crafting table and interact with it.
- Place one sugar cane in any slot of the crafting grid. The position does not matter for this recipe.
- Take the sugar from the output slot. Sugar cane is consumed one-for-one, so a single cane produces one sugar.
If you cannot find the recipe, open the recipe book (the book icon in the inventory or crafting table screen), search for “sugar”, and select it. The recipe book will fill the grid with the required ingredient when you select the result. Minecraft’s official crafting guide describes this recipe book behavior, and it is the most reliable check if your interface looks different from what is described here.
Getting more sugar cane
Sugar cane grows naturally in many biomes near water, but you can also plant it yourself. A sugar cane plant needs to be placed on a block that allows planting, such as dirt, grass block, sand, or red sand, and that block must touch water. Community reference pages for the Minecraft Wiki describe these planting rules.
- Plant the first cane on a valid block directly next to water.
- Stacks grow upward from the base. Each cane must sit on another cane or on a valid block.
- Growth speed depends on random ticks and conditions, so there is no fixed time you can rely on for planning.
Other sources of sugar
The Minecraft Wiki’s sugar reference lists two other routes to sugar. You can craft sugar from a honey bottle, and witches can drop sugar when defeated. These are useful backups if you cannot easily harvest cane, but sugar cane is the simplest and most consistent option.

Bone meal and edition differences
Bone meal behaves differently across editions. According to the Minecraft Wiki’s sugar cane reference, bone meal can be used to grow sugar cane in Bedrock Edition, but it cannot be used on sugar cane in Java Edition. If a tutorial tells you to use bone meal on cane, check which edition it is written for. Recipes for sugar itself are the same in both editions as described in these references.
What sugar is used for
Sugar appears in several food and brewing recipes. The Minecraft Wiki’s sugar reference and Minecraft.net’s “Taking Inventory: Sugar” article mention cake, pumpkin pie, and fermented spider eyes. Sugar is also an ingredient in the Potion of Swiftness. Check the recipe book for the exact ingredients in your game version, since recipes can change between updates.

Troubleshooting
- The sugar recipe does not appear: Make sure you are holding sugar cane in the grid, not another plant. Confirm you are on a version that includes this recipe, then check the recipe book.
- Cane is not growing: Confirm the bottom block is valid and touches water, and that the plant is not already at its maximum height.
- Bone meal has no effect on cane: This is expected in Java Edition, where bone meal cannot be used on sugar cane.
