To make Selenium screenshots consistent, stabilize the browser and operating-system environment, use the same viewport and device scale factor, and wait for the page state you intend to capture—not just for navigation to finish. Then control animations and other changing content that is outside the test’s purpose, and review screenshot differences against a checked-in baseline.
Why Selenium screenshots change between runs
A screenshot records the rendered page at one moment. If the application is still updating, the browser configuration differs, or page content changes naturally, two captures can differ even when the test code has not changed. Selenium notes that a document reaching readyState does not mean JavaScript-driven application changes are complete; a race between the test and the page is a common source of flaky results (Selenium waiting strategies).
Rendering can also vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance advises running tests in the same environment used to generate their baselines (Playwright visual comparisons). A fixed viewport helps, but by itself does not guarantee pixel-identical output.
Keep the browser and capture environment fixed
Pin browser, driver, and operating system
Use the same browser binary and exact version locally and in CI, and keep the corresponding driver compatible. Chrome’s automation guidance recommends a version-pinned Chrome for Testing binary for deterministic automation runs (Chrome automation and testing). Run against the same operating-system or container image as the baseline environment; switching hosts can change font rendering and other pixels.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose one headless mode and capture geometry
Keep headless or headed execution consistent. Set the browser window dimensions explicitly before capturing, and configure the same viewport and device scale factor for every run. Store these values with the test configuration rather than inheriting a developer’s desktop window size. Also capture the same browsing context and region each time: Selenium’s WebDriver screenshot methods capture the current browsing context (Selenium working with windows and tabs).
Wait for the UI you actually want to capture
After navigating and performing the actions that reach the target screen, wait for an observable application condition: for example, the target element to be visible, a loading indicator to disappear, or the expected data to appear. Selenium’s explicit waits let a test poll for a condition instead of assuming that a fixed duration is enough. Use the condition that defines readiness for this page; a generic document-load event may happen before client-side rendering is complete.

A fixed sleep can be useful for diagnosing timing, but it is a weak synchronization strategy: it may waste time when the page is ready quickly and still be too short when the page is slow. Selenium documents its wait strategies at Waiting Strategies.
Make dynamic page content deterministic
Once the application is ready, identify content that can vary without representing a regression: animations, blinking carets, timestamps, rotating banners, randomized recommendations, or live data. Prefer to make test data and application state deterministic. If a region is irrelevant to the assertion, exclude or mask it in the comparison rather than changing the application behavior under test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not suppress animation or hide a region when its behavior is what the test is meant to verify. Playwright’s screenshot assertions disable animations by default and support stylesheets for filtering dynamic content, but those are Playwright-specific features, not Selenium capabilities (Playwright PageAssertions; Visual comparisons). In Selenium, implement any needed test-only styling or state control explicitly in your application or test setup.

Capture and review screenshots as baselines
For visual regression checks, save reference images alongside the test and review changes before replacing them. A new screenshot should not automatically become the baseline: doing that without review can normalize a genuine defect. Define an image-difference tolerance that matches the test’s purpose. A strict comparison catches small changes but can be noisy; a more permissive threshold filters harmless rendering variation but may conceal subtle regressions. Keep the chosen tolerance consistent and review borderline diffs.
- Fix the browser binary/version, driver, operating-system image, execution mode, viewport, and device scale factor.
- Drive the application to the required state and wait for an observable condition that proves it is ready.
- Control or exclude only the dynamic content irrelevant to the behavior being checked.
- Capture the same page region and compare it with a reviewed, version-controlled baseline.
- When a difference is intentional, update the baseline as a deliberate reviewed change.
Common causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot sometimes shows a spinner or partial page | The test captures after navigation but before client-side updates finish. | Wait for the target UI condition or for the loading indicator to disappear. |
| Text edges or layout differ between CI and a workstation | Different OS/container, browser build, headless mode, or rendering environment. | Run both against the same pinned browser and operating-system image, using the same mode. |
| Elements wrap or shift unexpectedly | Window or viewport dimensions differ. | Set dimensions explicitly and capture the same region at a fixed device scale factor. |
| Only dates, banners, or live values differ | Volatile content is part of the capture. | Freeze test data or mask the irrelevant region; retain it if it is under test. |
| Every run produces a new accepted baseline | Baseline updates are automatic or not reviewed. | Require review of visual changes before replacing the stored reference image. |

Does setting a fixed Selenium window size guarantee identical screenshots?
No. It controls capture geometry, but browser version, operating system, rendering mode, and page state can still affect pixels.

Should I use fixed sleeps to wait for a page?
Prefer condition-based waits tied to the UI state you need; a fixed delay does not establish that the application is ready.
