Launch installed Chrome or Edge with a browser channel
For most cases, a channel is the simplest way to tell Playwright to use a branded browser already installed on the machine. The import stays chromium; it is the launch option that selects Chrome or Edge. For example, save this as installed-browser.js in a project where the playwright package is installed, then run node installed-browser.js:

The requested browser channel must be installed and accessible to the operating-system user running the script. Playwright does not install these branded browsers by default. If you specify a channel that is absent, misspelled, or inaccessible, launch will fail rather than silently selecting a different installed browser.
Point Playwright at a specific executable
Use executablePath when a channel cannot select the browser you need—for example, a controlled local Chromium binary or an installation in an unusual location. Supply the path to the executable, not merely its containing directory:

executablePath: 'C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe'On macOS or Linux, use the path returned by the operating system for the browser installation. An absolute path avoids ambiguity: Playwright resolves a relative executablePath from the process’s current working directory, which may differ from the directory containing your script.

Compatibility trade-off
Playwright’s API reference advises using executablePath “with extreme caution.” Playwright is designed around the browser versions associated with its releases; an arbitrary executable may launch differently or behave incompatibly. If you choose a custom binary, pin the Playwright package version, record the browser version used, and validate the same setup in CI before depending on it. A successful launch on one developer’s machine is not proof that a separately updated browser will remain compatible.
Choose between the installed browser and Playwright’s browser
The right choice depends on whether you value a repeatable test environment, fidelity to a branded browser, or exact control over the binary. The supported channel approach is the convenient middle ground when the goal is to exercise installed Chrome or Edge. The explicit path gives more control but also transfers compatibility responsibility to you.

Use Playwright-managed Chromium for reproducible runs
If your actual requirement is “run Chromium reliably with this Playwright version,” rather than “run the desktop Chrome I already have,” install the matching Playwright-managed browser:
npx playwright install chromiumFor a Linux environment where browser system dependencies need installation too, use:
npx playwright install --with-deps chromiumThe general command npx playwright install installs the default supported browsers. This managed-browser route is usually the better foundation for CI because Playwright releases expect particular browser versions. A separately updated desktop browser can change outside your project’s dependency updates, making test behavior harder to reproduce.

Share or localize Playwright-managed browser binaries
PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH controls the storage and lookup location for Playwright-managed browser binaries. Set it consistently before installing and running tests if multiple jobs need a shared browser cache:

PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH=$HOME/pw-browsers npx playwright testThe same value matters in both commands: installation must put the browser where test execution will look for it. For a hermetic local install inside the project dependency tree, set PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH=0 while installing.
This variable applies to Playwright-managed browsers. It does not relocate the separately installed Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge applications selected by a branded channel, nor does it replace executablePath.

Common failures and how to fix them
- Unknown or unavailable channel: Check the spelling against the documented channel names, then verify the corresponding branded browser is installed for the same user or service account that runs Playwright. A browser installed for your desktop login may not be available to a CI account.
- Executable cannot be found: Check that
executablePathpoints to the browser executable itself and that the file exists. Prefer an absolute path; relative paths are resolved from the current working directory, not necessarily the script’s directory. - Permission or execution error: Verify that the process running Playwright can read and execute the binary. Check the actual account used by a service, container, or CI runner rather than relying on your interactive shell’s permissions.
- Custom binary launches but tests fail: The executable may not match the browser version Playwright expects. Reproduce with Playwright-managed Chromium, or pin and validate both the Playwright package and custom browser version as a pair.
- Linux launch fails because dependencies are missing: Where the environment permits system dependency installation, run
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium. If that is not permitted, arrange for the needed dependencies in the runner image through its normal provisioning process. - Browser missing from a shared cache: Use the same
PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATHvalue for the install and test steps. Confirm that the cache is available to the account executing both steps. - CI behavior differs from a workstation: Check whether CI is using a managed browser, a channel, or a custom executable. Make the choice explicit, ensure the required browser is present in the runner, and avoid relying on a developer’s auto-updating desktop installation for repeatable runs.

Practical reliability and cost considerations
Using installed Chrome or Edge can make a test closer to the branded browser environment you want to inspect, but it makes the run depend on that machine’s browser installation and, potentially, its enterprise policies. Managed Chromium trades that particular fidelity for a version relationship tied to the Playwright release. For a CI pipeline, decide deliberately whether browser-brand fidelity or reproducibility is the test objective; mixing an unpinned executable with an expectation of identical runs is a common source of avoidable drift.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting a Chrome channel install or update Chrome for me?
No. A channel selects an already installed branded browser; Playwright does not install Chrome or Edge by default. Install and update the browser through the operating system or your organization’s normal browser-management process.
Will a Chrome channel automatically reuse my existing Chrome profile?
The channel option chooses which browser executable to launch; it does not, by itself, specify a profile or guarantee reuse of an existing signed-in session. Treat profile configuration as a separate concern.
