To accept recurring donations through PayPal, set up a PayPal Donate button and let donors choose an automatic monthly gift. You can also use a hosted donation page, campaign, or shareable link. Recurring payments are authorized by donors; PayPal does not silently turn a one-time donation into repeat charges.
Choose a PayPal donation option
PayPal offers several ways to receive donations. Choose based on whether you have a website, how much customization you want, and where donors should begin:

PayPal describes its hosted donation page and link options as set-up routes that do not require technical skills. It does not identify one option as best for every organization.
Set up recurring donations with a Donate button
- Choose the website-button route. In PayPal’s donation tools, set up a Donate button and integrate it into your website, following the instructions shown for your account and market.
- Make the recurring option clear to donors. PayPal’s Donate button can support an automatic monthly donation. The donor chooses whether to make a recurring gift; do not describe a one-time donation as automatically recurring.
- Explain how donors can manage their gifts. Tell supporters they can use their PayPal profile settings to change or cancel their automatic payment. The organization also has profile controls for managing automatic payments.
- Test the donor journey before sharing it widely. Check that the button appears on your site and that its donation flow clearly communicates the recurring choice. Available controls can depend on your account and country.
PayPal Help puts the core setup this way: “To receive recurring donations, simply set up a Donate button and integrate it into your site.”

Choose an account that supports your setup
Account capabilities differ by market and donation route. PayPal’s US donation page says a personal account can create a donation page, while a business account offers more update and customization features. PayPal’s UK guidance describes a business account for setting up a website button. Do not assume that every personal account can create a website button: check the requirements shown for your country and account.
Charity status does not automatically guarantee special rates. PayPal says eligible charities may qualify for lower transaction rates, but eligibility needs confirmation and may depend on local rules. Check with PayPal for the requirements that apply to your organization.

Understand donation fees before publishing
PayPal says its donation page has no setup or cancellation fees, but transaction rates apply. The rate and any charity eligibility are market-specific and can change, so confirm the current terms for your account and country rather than relying on a rate quoted for another region.
