Keep the trick-or-treat route clear, use battery-powered lights instead of accessible candles, protect outdoor electrical decorations with GFCI protection, and give pets a quiet place away from the front door. Before decorating, check every light set’s condition and confirm that its label allows outdoor use.
How do I make Halloween decorations safe for kids and pets?
Start with the route visitors will use, then check each hazard in turn. CPSC advises keeping walkways clear and choosing battery-operated lights or glow sticks over candles in pumpkins and accessible decorations. Its Halloween guidance also warns that children or pets can knock over candles (CPSC, published October 18, 2022).
- Walk the route at dusk. Check the lawn, steps, porch, and path to the door in the lighting trick-or-treaters will encounter. Remove or relocate low decorations, stakes, cords, and other obstacles; keep the route visible and uncluttered.
- Choose flameless lighting where people or pets can reach it. Battery-operated lights or glow sticks are safer choices for jack-o’-lanterns and accessible displays. If you use an open flame, position it away from combustible decorations and where a child or pet cannot brush against or knock it over. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Make powered displays suitable for outdoor use. Use GFCI-protected outdoor power, follow the product instructions, and route cords away from the walking path and pets.
- Inspect light sets before plugging them in. Look for cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Use safety-tested sets and discard damaged ones.
- Set up a pet retreat. Keep decoration cords and flames out of reach, and arrange a comfortable room away from the entrance for pets that may be stressed by repeated door activity.
Are Halloween lights safe outside?
Only if the particular light set is labeled and instructed for outdoor use. A battery-powered light is not automatically weather-resistant, and a light string should not be assumed safe for wet conditions just because it is sold as holiday décor. Check the package or manufacturer’s instructions for the exact item and follow them.
Use safety-tested lights and examine both new and previously used sets for damaged sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Do not use a damaged set. For outdoor electrical decorations, NFPA recommends GFCI protection and testing that protection before each use (NFPA, article dated October 8, 2025).

What GFCI protection means for outdoor décor
A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) helps protect against electric shock by interrupting power when it detects a ground fault. Use a GFCI-protected outlet or other GFCI protection appropriate to the setup, and test it before use as NFPA advises. NFPA also notes that under the U.S. National Electrical Code (NEC), outdoor GFCI receptacles in damp and wet locations must be weather-resistant; a weatherproof enclosure is required when a cord is inserted. Local adoption and requirements can vary, so follow applicable local electrical rules and the device instructions.
How can I keep cords from becoming a trip hazard?
Keep cords out of the path rather than relying on visitors to notice them. Walk the intended route at dusk and move cords, low decorations, stakes, and other obstacles away from lawns, steps, porches, and the approach to the door. Avoid routing a cord across a walkway; where a setup cannot be moved, follow the cord and product instructions and make sure the walking route remains easy to see and use.

How do I keep my dog or cat safe from Halloween decorations?
For pets unsettled by knocks, doorbells, costumes, or a frequently opening door, ASPCA recommends that all but the most social pets stay in a separate, comfortable room during peak trick-or-treat hours. Familiar toys can help distract them (ASPCA Halloween safety tips).

Why avoid open flames and damaged cords?
CPSC reports an average of 5,600 candle-related fires per year and 1,600 fires involving electrical cords or plugs per year, based on 2017–2019 data. These are general U.S. annual averages, not estimates of fires caused by Halloween decorations. They help explain why flameless lights, careful placement, and sound cords matter, but they should not be read as Halloween-specific risk figures.
