The most useful way to text one-handed is to move the keyboard closer to your thumb. On Samsung Galaxy phones, turn on the keyboard’s One-handed mode; on other Android phones, look for a similar one-handed keyboard option or use Gboard’s Glide typing to enter words by swiping. Android’s system-wide One-handed mode is a separate feature: it brings upper-screen content within reach but does not change the keyboard.
Choose the feature that matches what you want to reach
| Feature | What changes | Where to look | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-handed keyboard | The keyboard narrows or shifts to one side, bringing keys closer to your thumb. | Keyboard settings; Samsung documents the option for Galaxy devices. | Availability and menus vary by device and operating system. |
| Glide typing | You slide a finger across letters to enter a word instead of tapping each key. | Gboard settings, if you use Gboard. | Google says not all languages support it. |
| Android One-handed mode | The screen’s upper content moves down to make it easier to reach. | Search Settings for “One-handed mode.” | Some instructions require Android 12 or newer; availability can vary by device. |
These features can complement one another, but they do different jobs. A smaller keyboard changes where you type; Glide typing changes how you enter words; Android One-handed mode changes screen reach. The official instructions do not provide comparable speed or accuracy measurements, so there is no documented basis for ranking them by performance.

Swipe across letters with Gboard
Gboard’s Glide typing lets you spell a word by sliding your finger from letter to letter and lifting when you finish. It can be useful when your thumb is already on the keyboard, but it does not shrink or reposition the keys.
- Open an app with a text field and bring up Gboard.
- Slide a finger across the letters in the word, then lift to enter it.
- If needed, open Gboard’s settings through Settings → System → Languages & input → Virtual keyboard → Gboard. The route can differ on customized Android versions.
Language support is not universal. Check Google’s Gboard Glide typing instructions for the feature’s current details.

Use Android One-handed mode to reach the upper screen

- Open Settings and search for One-handed mode.
- Turn on Use One-handed mode.
- Use the on-screen gesture to pull the top half of the display down when you need it.
Some of Google’s instructions apply only to Android 12 and newer. Depending on the device, you may also be able to add One-handed mode to Quick Settings as an accessibility shortcut. See Google’s Android One-handed mode help; manufacturer customizations can change the available menus.

What Samsung One Hand Operation+ does—and does not do
Samsung’s One Hand Operation+ adds configurable swipes from the sides of the screen for actions such as opening apps or triggering settings. It is an optional navigation aid, not a one-handed typing mode. Samsung says it is available on its smartphones and tablets, while its built-in One-handed mode instructions cover smartphones. You can adjust the gesture handles’ placement and size to suit your thumb and case, but the Galaxy Store listing notes that handles can interfere with touch input in some apps.
For details, consult Samsung’s One Hand Operation+ and One-handed mode guide and the Galaxy Store listing.
