To make one sleep video play again automatically in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, open its Properties, and enable Loop. The separate Restart playback when source becomes active option resets playback when the source becomes active; it does not replace looping.
Loop one sleep video in OBS
- In your OBS scene, add the video as a Media Source.
- Select the source and open Properties.
- Turn on Loop. OBS will play the file again when playback completes.
- Optionally turn on Restart playback when source becomes active if you want the video to begin at the start whenever that source becomes visible or active.
- Choose whether to enable Show nothing when playback ends based on what should appear if playback does end. This setting controls the display after the file ends; it does not make the video repeat.
The Media Source is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported video formats, but a listed extension does not guarantee that every codec or damaged file will play correctly. OBS Media Sources guide
Choose the right playback behavior
| What you want | OBS setting or source | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one video continuously | Media Source: Loop | Starts the file again when playback completes. |
| Start from the beginning when the source becomes active | Media Source: Restart playback when source becomes active | Resets playback on source activation; it is not a substitute for Loop. |
| Hide the source after playback ends | Media Source: Show nothing when playback ends | Changes what OBS displays after the file ends; it does not replay the file. |
| Cycle through a playlist | VLC Video source: Loop Playlist | Restarts the playlist when it runs out of media files. VLC must be installed for this source to be available. |
For a single sleep video, the built-in Media Source and its Loop control are the simpler route. For several files, use VLC Video and its playlist controls. OBS Media Sources guide
Troubleshoot a video that stops or disappears
The video plays once and stops
- Open Properties for the actual Media Source in the scene and verify that Loop is enabled.
- Do not rely on Restart playback when source becomes active to replay a file continuously; that option applies when the source becomes active.
The preview goes blank or holds on the last frame
Check Show nothing when playback ends. It determines whether OBS hides the source after playback ends or leaves the last frame visible; it does not control looping. If the source is supposed to repeat, check Loop separately.

A file will not play as expected
OBS lists several supported file formats, but the extension alone does not confirm that the file’s codec is compatible or that the file is intact. Try a known-good file in a listed format to help distinguish a playback-file problem from a source-setting problem. OBS Media Sources guide
An automation script hides and quickly re-shows the source
A timing edge case has been reported for automation that changes source visibility after a playback-ended event. In that specific scenario, the OBS issue discussion recommends waiting at least 60 frames after the event before changing visibility. This is a workaround for the reported automation case, not a requirement for ordinary Media Source looping. OBS issue #11040
