OBS has no documented built-in setting that watches a YouTube channel for new uploads and adds them to a YouTube playlist. To automate playlist membership, a separate script or service must identify each eligible upload and call YouTube Data API’s playlistItems.insert method with the destination playlist ID and video ID, authorized through OAuth 2.0. OBS can be part of a larger workflow, but it does not perform that YouTube playlist operation by itself.
“Playlist” can also mean a local list of files played in an OBS scene. That uses OBS’s VLC Video source and does not change any YouTube playlist. The two setups are different, so choose the one that matches what you want viewers to see.
First decide what “YouTube live playlist” means

A YouTube live broadcast corresponds to a YouTube video resource; it is not itself a playlist. Playlist membership and live-broadcast management are separate operations (YouTube Live Streaming API overview).

Use this route when you want OBS to play a sequence of files stored on the computer running OBS. The source requires VLC installed. OBS documents loop and shuffle options for this local playback source (OBS media sources).

- Install VLC on the computer that runs OBS.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene where the videos should appear.
- Open the source properties and add the media files to its playlist.
- Choose whether to loop or shuffle the list, according to how you want playback to proceed.
- Preview the scene and confirm the files play in the intended order before starting a broadcast.
This list is local to the OBS source. A newly uploaded YouTube video will not appear in it automatically; adding a file to the local list and adding a YouTube video to a YouTube playlist are different tasks.
For a YouTube playlist: automate playlist insertion through the API
YouTube’s Data API provides playlist and playlist-item resources. The insertion call needs the destination playlist ID and the ID of a video that should be added. The write request requires OAuth authorization for an account allowed to manage that playlist (YouTube playlist implementation guide; YouTube Data API reference).

- Identify the destination playlist. Use the authenticated channel’s playlists and select the playlist whose ID should receive the uploads. Do not substitute the channel ID or a live broadcast ID for the playlist ID.
- Decide which uploads qualify. A separate script or service must receive or discover each new video ID and apply your rules—for example, whether private, scheduled, or otherwise ineligible uploads should be skipped. The API insertion reference explains how to add an identified video; it does not prescribe a turnkey channel-upload trigger or filtering policy.
- Authorize the write operation. Set up OAuth 2.0 authorization for the Google account that can edit the target playlist. An unauthenticated OBS connection or stream key does not grant permission to edit playlist membership.
- Call
playlistItems.insert. Submit a playlist item withsnippet.playlistIdset to the destination playlist ID andsnippet.resourceIdset to an object whosekindisyoutube#videoand whosevideoIdis the new video’s ID. - Handle the result. Confirm the API request succeeded and that the item appears in the intended playlist. Retain enough state to avoid repeatedly inserting the same upload if your automation processes an event again.
The API also documents listing and deleting playlist items, so an authorized integration can inspect or change playlist membership. The exact method details and request fields are in the YouTube Data API reference.
Where OBS can fit—and where it cannot
OBS supports Python and Lua scripts, and external applications can interact with OBS using its built-in WebSocket endpoint (OBS Developer Guide). Those are integration points for controlling or coordinating OBS; they do not detect channel uploads or replace the OAuth-authorized YouTube API insertion request.

For example, an external workflow could coordinate a streaming setup and separately call YouTube Data API to update a playlist. Keep the responsibilities distinct: OBS handles the production or playback setup, while the API call changes YouTube playlist membership.
Do not confuse playlist automation with broadcast automation
The OBS forum listing for Live Stream Segmenter describes broadcast operations, including automatic broadcast renewal using YouTube APIs. It does not claim to add newly uploaded videos to a YouTube playlist, so it is not a playlist auto-population solution.

The listing identifies version 1.1.4, created January 13, 2026, for OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It lists a livestream-permitted account, a Google Cloud project with YouTube Data API v3 enabled, and an OAuth 2.0 desktop client as requirements. Check the current listing for changes before installing it.

Common problems and fixes
- The video is not added: verify that the automation has the correct video ID and destination playlist ID, and that the API request uses the documented
playlistItemfields. - The request is rejected for authorization: authorize with OAuth 2.0 as an account that can manage the target playlist. A YouTube stream key is not playlist-edit permission.
- The playlist item is added, but OBS does not play it: API insertion changes YouTube playlist membership; it does not add a local media file to an OBS VLC Video source. Configure that source separately if local scene playback is also needed.
- A plugin renews a broadcast but no playlist item appears: broadcast renewal and playlist insertion are separate operations. Use an API integration that explicitly calls
playlistItems.insertfor the playlist task. - New uploads are missed or the wrong uploads are included: the upload-discovery and qualification step belongs to your separate automation. The cited API insertion instructions do not define a turnkey trigger or filtering rules, so verify the behavior of the trigger you choose.
