You can make money clipping videos, but views alone do not guarantee payment. The practical routes are eligible platform revenue, paid brand campaigns, or clipping services for creators. Before publishing, secure the rights to use the source footage, add meaningful original value, and confirm the rules and eligibility that apply to your account and country.
Three ways clipping videos can earn money
A clip is an edited excerpt from a longer video, stream, podcast, or other recording. The money may come from a platform, a client, or a brand; each route has different requirements.
| Route | Who pays | What determines eligibility or payment |
|---|---|---|
| Platform revenue | The platform, through its monetization program | Account eligibility, opt-in, eligible views, and compliance with monetization and content policies |
| Creator clipping service | The source creator or another client | Your agreed scope, rate, deliverables, usage rights, and payment terms |
| Brand campaign | A brand or campaign partner | Campaign-specific acceptance criteria, permitted content and platforms, deadlines, view rules, and payment terms |
These are not interchangeable. A creator may pay you to edit clips even if the clips do not earn platform revenue. A platform may share revenue with an eligible account without paying a separate clipping fee. A brand opportunity is not a guaranteed paycheck just because you make clips.
Can YouTube Shorts pay for clips?
Yes, if your channel is eligible for the YouTube Partner Program, you accept the Shorts Monetization Module, and the views qualify under YouTube’s rules. Only eligible Shorts views accrued after you accept the module can share in Shorts revenue. YouTube allocates a creator pool based on each monetizing creator’s share of eligible engaged Shorts views; creators keep 45% of their allocation. That is not 45% of all Shorts ad revenue or a fixed payment per view. See YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies.

Revenue comes from ads shown between videos in the Shorts Feed, rather than the long-form Watch Page ad model. Your actual earnings depend on eligible views and the pool allocation; a view count by itself does not establish that a Short earned money.
Why reposted clips may not qualify
YouTube identifies unedited clips from other people’s movies or videos, reuploads of another creator’s content, and compilations without original content as examples of non-original Shorts whose engaged views are ineligible. Artificial or fake views are also ineligible. A Short longer than one minute that contains claimed content is blocked and cannot monetize under the Shorts policy.
Copyright permission and YouTube monetization approval are separate questions. YouTube reviews reused content across Shorts and other formats, including commentary, clips, compilations, and reaction videos. Permission from the rights holder does not by itself guarantee YouTube Partner Program acceptance. YouTube’s policy says content should be original and “authentic”; on July 15, 2025, it clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its inauthentic-content policy, while saying the clarification did not change reused-content review. Review the YouTube channel monetization policies as well as copyright requirements before relying on clips as a business model.

Get rights and make the clip your own
Before editing someone else’s stream, podcast, or video for publication, get written permission or a campaign license. Do not assume that credit, a short excerpt, captions, or a creator’s public posting makes commercial reuse permissible. Your permission should cover the actual footage, edits, platforms, and commercial purpose you have in mind.
Put the license terms in writing
- Identify which source videos or streams you may clip, and whether the permission covers future uploads.
- Specify where you may publish the clips, whether paid promotion is allowed, and how long the permission lasts.
- Agree on permitted clip length, edits, attribution, and any required links or disclosures.
- Clarify who owns the finished edit and whether either party may reuse or license it elsewhere.
- For a campaign, record the campaign period, deliverables, accepted-view rules, exclusions, deadlines, payment method, and payment date.
Add meaningful original contribution
Make each clip useful as a standalone piece. Original narration, context, analysis, or a distinctive editorial structure can show your contribution more clearly than a bare excerpt. Captions, cropping, or reframing may help presentation, but none guarantees monetization or makes unauthorized use acceptable. Keep the permission record and the final edit together so you can identify what was licensed and what you changed.
Use Twitch clips carefully
Twitch’s clip tool supports clips up to 60 seconds and lets users share clips to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, or Snapchat. That sharing feature does not grant a blanket right to monetize someone else’s content. Streamers can control whether viewers may post clips from their channel elsewhere, and a channel owner or moderators may delete clips or issue a ban or timeout. Check the channel’s settings and the creator’s permission before cross-posting. See Twitch’s clip guide.

Can TikTok or brand campaigns pay clippers?
Brand work is a possible route, but do not treat it as an automatic per-view program. TikTok describes TikTok One as a creator-facing product for connecting with brand opportunities. That does not establish that every clipper qualifies, that a campaign is available in every country, or that any campaign will pay a particular amount. Check the live product requirements and local availability before applying.

Offer clipping as a service to creators
A direct client arrangement can be more predictable than waiting for platform distribution because the agreed deliverable and fee can be documented in advance. It is still only as reliable as the contract and the client’s payment terms. Agree on the number and format of clips, editing rounds, delivery schedule, publishing responsibilities, rights to source footage, attribution, ownership of the finished edits, and payment milestones before work begins.

Decide whether you are only editing files for the creator or also publishing them on your own account. If you publish, get explicit permission for the account, platforms, duration, and monetization use. If the creator wants clips posted to their own accounts, clarify who controls those accounts and who supplies any required access.
A practical workflow before you publish
- Choose the revenue route. Decide whether the clip is for eligible platform revenue, a paid campaign, or a creator/client service. Do not forecast platform income as if views automatically trigger payment.
- Confirm rights. Get written permission or a campaign license covering the source footage, destinations, edits, duration, attribution, and ownership.
- Check account and country eligibility. Review the current platform rules immediately before publishing. Requirements and availability can change; the official sources here do not establish current TikTok Creator Rewards thresholds or country availability.
- Create an original edit. Give viewers context or analysis, not just a repost. Verify that music and other included material are also cleared for the intended use.
- Document campaign conditions. Save the accepted-view definition, exclusions, deadlines, payment method, and schedule, along with proof of performance and acceptance.
- Review the result before scaling. Track the time spent editing, clips accepted, eligible performance, client payments, and any rights or moderation issues. Do not assume one successful clip predicts the next.
What earnings should you expect?
There is no reliable general per-view clipping rate established here. YouTube’s 45% figure is the creator’s share of an allocated Shorts pool, not a universal rate per thousand views. Campaign compensation depends on its own written terms, and service fees depend on what you and the client agree. Treat income examples without a defined platform, account status, country, rights arrangement, and time period as non-comparable.

For planning, separate revenue received from views generated. Record eligible or accepted views, the applicable campaign window, and payments actually made. Recheck platform terms and country eligibility before using old estimates to set prices or promise clients results.

Common problems and fixes
Views arrive, but there is no platform revenue
Check whether your account is eligible, whether you accepted the relevant monetization module, and whether the views occurred after acceptance and meet the platform’s definition of eligible engagement. Views do not automatically become payable.
A clip is removed or triggers a rights complaint
Pause further uploads using that material. Verify that the written permission covers the specific footage, platform, edit, and use. A permission to share privately or on one channel may not cover monetized cross-posting elsewhere.
You have permission, but YouTube monetization is denied
Permission does not settle the separate reused-content review. Revisit the channel-level monetization policy and whether the clips contain substantive original contribution rather than primarily repackaged footage.

A campaign disputes the results
Compare your records with the campaign’s written definition of accepted views, exclusions, deadlines, and reporting window. Preserve evidence of post URLs, performance, and acceptance rather than relying on a verbal estimate.
A Twitch clip cannot be cross-posted
Check the streamer’s clip-sharing settings and ask the channel owner for permission. Twitch’s cross-posting feature does not override the channel’s controls or give independent commercial rights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your clipping workflow also includes keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo can loop those videos from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; streams run at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
