concise-md is a Python command-line tool that trims Markdown AI answers into three parts: a conclusion, selected code, and verification guidance. It uses local rules to extract and reorganize content rather than asking another language model to summarize it. That can save reading time, but it does not check whether the shorter answer is correct.

What concise-md does

The tool is aimed at a particular frustration: as its author puts it, “Reading it is the expensive part.” Long AI exchanges can take effort to work through, and asking for a shorter response may mean another round-trip. concise-md offers a post-processing step instead: give it a Markdown answer and it selects content for a compact view.

Its output is organized into three sections:

  • Conclusion: a sentence intended to capture the answer.
  • Minimal code: selected fenced code blocks, copied rather than rewritten.
  • Verification: prose or instructions about checking the result.

The project author describes it as a local, rule-based CLI with no LLM calls. The tool therefore avoids a second model-generated rewrite, but its output is only as useful as the source answer and the extraction rules.

How the filter chooses what to keep

Conclusion

The parser divides Markdown into heading-delimited sections, separates fenced code from prose, joins wrapped paragraphs, and splits prose into sentences. It first looks for a sentence containing markers such as “tl;dr,” “in short,” or “the standard approach.” If it finds none, it falls back to the opening sentence of the first section.

Code

The author says the filter can include up to three code blocks, with a limit of 25 lines per block. It is designed to preserve fenced code verbatim. A block beginning with “DON’T” is placed after the preferred example, rather than ahead of it.

Verification

The tool first looks for a section headed “Verification” or “How to verify.” If neither heading is present, it searches prose for words such as “verify” or “check.” This is a heuristic selection, not an assessment of whether the instructions are sufficient.

Short answers

When prose is under 10 lines and the answer contains at most one code block, the tool passes the input through unchanged. The author says already-concise answers returning unchanged is intentional.

How to run it on a Markdown answer

The documented example runs the CLI on a file named answer.md:

concise answer.md

The utility also accepts input through standard input, so the intended workflow can include piping Markdown into it. The available project description specifies Python 3.11 or newer and says the utility has zero dependencies; those are project-author statements, not independently verified installation or release details.

In the author’s illustrative CSV scenario, the point is to surface “twelve lines of code and one way to check it works.” That is an example of a compact result, not a general promise about output length or the right amount of code for every task.

Why extract code instead of asking an LLM to summarize?

The author’s rationale is that rewriting code can silently change its behavior. In one reported deduplication example, a rewritten snippet recalculated a duplicate count after the data had already been deduplicated, so it reported “removed 0 rows.” The author presents that as the motivation for carrying code blocks through unchanged; the example was not independently reproduced.

That design creates a useful distinction: concise-md can avoid introducing code changes during summarization, but it cannot establish that the original code works. The author explicitly warns that a wrong answer can become a shorter wrong answer and recommends running extracted code when using it for study.

What the reported results do—and do not—show

The project author reported the following figures in a 2026 DEV Community article. They describe the author’s examples and project claims, not independent benchmarks:

Reported item Author’s figure or result Qualification
CI tests 12 tests Reported for Python 3.11–3.13.
Sample-run time 0.02 seconds Reported for the described sample runs; not a cross-machine performance result.
English sample length 88 lines to 46 lines One sample, not a typical or guaranteed reduction.
Japanese sample length 57 lines to 26 lines One sample, not a typical or guaranteed reduction.

These examples indicate that the filter can shorten some answers, but do not predict how much it will remove from another document. The author describes the project as personal open source, with no warranty, and invites users to file an issue if something breaks.

Where concise-md can mislead or disappoint

  • It does not fact-check. It selects and rearranges text; it does not validate claims, code, or verification steps.
  • Its Markdown parsing is limited. The author describes a regular-expression parser rather than a full CommonMark implementation. Table rows are treated as prose and can lead to an odd conclusion.
  • Selection depends on wording and structure. An answer without the expected headings or marker phrases may yield a less useful excerpt.
  • Verbatim code is not verified code. Preserving a block protects it from this filter’s rewriting, not from errors already present in the answer.

It is best understood as a reading aid for Markdown answers with recognizable headings, prose, and fenced examples—not as a substitute for checking the answer or testing its code.
