Keep livekit.yaml outside the replaceable LiveKit container, then mount it into the container and configure the server to read that mounted file. LiveKit supports a production configuration file passed with --config, or YAML supplied through the LIVEKIT_CONFIG environment variable. The correct in-container path and Compose syntax depend on your service definition and LiveKit image version.

Why configuration disappears when a container is replaced

A file saved only in a container’s writable filesystem can be lost when Docker removes and recreates that container—for example, during an upgrade or a Compose recreate. Keep the authoritative configuration on the host or in explicitly persistent storage, and make sure the LiveKit process reads that copy.

LiveKit’s production VM workflow generates a deployment directory containing files such as docker-compose.yaml and livekit.yaml; its installation workflow places generated configuration under /opt/livekit. See the LiveKit VM deployment guide for the workflow and its deployment context.

Choose where Docker should persist the YAML

Option How it works Practical trade-off
Bind mount Maps a host file or directory into the container. Convenient when you want to edit, inspect, back up, or keep the YAML alongside the Compose project. Preserve the host-side file when replacing the container.
Named volume Docker manages a persistent storage location and attaches it to the container. Docker manages the storage location, but directly inspecting or editing a plain configuration file may be less convenient. Include the volume in your backup and migration plan.

For an operator-maintained text configuration, a bind mount is often the simpler choice. These are general Docker storage trade-offs, not a LiveKit-specific requirement or ranking.

Connect the host file to LiveKit

  1. Locate the Compose project. Put livekit.yaml in the project directory or another stable host-side deployment directory. If you are using LiveKit’s generated VM deployment, inspect the files and path created by that workflow rather than assuming a different layout.
  2. Inspect the LiveKit service. Check the image and version, current command or entrypoint, existing volumes, and environment variables in docker-compose.yaml. Do not assume a mount destination from another Compose example applies to your image.
  3. Mount the host configuration. Add a bind mount for the host-side YAML at the path you intend the container process to read. Choose a destination that matches the service’s configuration command and the image’s filesystem.
  4. Tell the server to use the mounted file. LiveKit documents passing a configuration file with --config. Alternatively, it supports providing the YAML body through LIVEKIT_CONFIG. Consult the LiveKit deployment and configuration documentation and adapt the existing service rather than copying an unverified universal command.
  5. Keep the host copy intact. Recreating or upgrading the container should not involve deleting the directory that holds your authoritative YAML. Back it up along with the rest of your deployment configuration.
  6. Check the result. Confirm that the mount points to the intended host file, the container path matches the server’s configuration argument, the file is readable by the process, and the YAML is valid. A persistent mount alone does not prove that LiveKit is loading the file.

Keep development and production setups distinct

LiveKit’s local guide starts the server in development mode with livekit-server --dev and directs readers to deployment guidance when customizing production settings. A local development launch is not a substitute for production configuration. For a production service, follow the deployment-specific guidance for configuration, TLS, firewall rules, and networking.

The official VM guide describes a particular deployment using Docker Compose and Caddy, with a domain and DNS records as prerequisites. Its generated files and /opt/livekit workflow are relevant to that setup; they should not be treated as a universal Compose layout for every LiveKit installation.

Configuration persistence does not expose network ports

A correctly mounted YAML file can still specify network settings that are unreachable from clients. Compose port mappings, host firewall rules, and the values in LiveKit’s configuration must agree. LiveKit’s ports and firewall reference lists API/WebSocket port 7880, ICE/UDP ports 50000–60000 by default, and ICE/TCP port 7881; UDP mux uses 7882 when configured. These are documented defaults, not a guarantee that a particular deployment has mapped or opened them.

The VM guide’s firewall recommendations apply to its Caddy-backed deployment. Use the port and firewall requirements for your own configuration rather than assuming that mounting the YAML opens network access.

Do not confuse Redis with configuration storage

Redis can be a production dependency in LiveKit configurations, including distributed deployments, but it does not make livekit.yaml persistent. Keep the configuration in host-side storage or a persistent Docker volume; configure and operate Redis separately according to the deployment you are using.

Common persistence failures to check

  • The file vanishes after replacement: it was stored only in the container, or the host-side directory was removed during deployment cleanup.
  • The file remains but settings do not take effect: verify that the service reads the mounted destination using --config, or that LIVEKIT_CONFIG contains the intended YAML body.
  • The container cannot read the file: check the host path, mount destination, and file permissions for the process running LiveKit.
  • Clients still cannot connect: validate the configuration’s network settings, Compose mappings, and firewall rules independently of file persistence.
  • A development setup behaves differently: distinguish the local --dev workflow from production deployment instructions before applying production configuration.
