To make your iPhone read the screen aloud, turn on Speak Screen in Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak, then swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen. You can adjust the rate while it reads, or set the general speaking rate with the slider in Read & Speak.
Turn on Speak Screen
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Read & Speak.
- Tap Speak Screen and switch it on.

Have iPhone read a screen aloud
Open the screen containing the text you want to hear, then swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen. The speech controls appear as iPhone reads. Use them to pause, resume, adjust the rate, move forward or back through the content, or select Speak on Touch and tap text to hear it.

Change the speaking rate
Adjust the rate during playback
While Speak Screen is reading, use the rate control in the on-screen speech controls to make the current playback faster or slower.

Set the general speaking rate
For the general spoken-content rate, go to Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak and drag Speaking Rate. Apple does not specify a numeric range for this slider in its guide.
Optional voice and language settings
Read & Speak also includes options for choosing a voice or dialect, setting a default language, enabling automatic language detection, and customizing pronunciations. These options are not required to enable Speak Screen.

Speak Screen is different from Siri’s speaking rate
The Speaking Rate setting described here applies to spoken screen content. Siri’s speaking rate is documented separately under Settings > Accessibility > Siri; changing one should not be confused with changing the other.
