On a computer, open the document and choose File > Page setup > Pages. Under Orientation, select Landscape, then click OK. If you cannot find the page controls, check whether the document is set to Pageless: orientation, paper size, and page color controls require Pages format.
Make the whole Google Doc landscape on a computer
- Open the document in Google Docs.
- Choose File > Page setup.
- At the top of the dialog, select Pages.
- Under Orientation, select Landscape.
- Click OK.
To make landscape the default for new documents, choose Set as default in the Page setup dialog. This changes the default settings for new documents; it does not mean that only the current document changes. Google documents these controls in its Page setup help.
Change paper size or page color
In desktop Google Docs, open File > Page setup and select Pages. Choose a value under Paper size or Page colour, then click OK. These are page-based settings, so use Pages format when you need page boundaries or print-oriented controls.

Make only one section or selection landscape
A document can combine portrait and landscape layouts, which can help fit a wide table, chart, or graphic. On a computer, use a section break to mark the boundaries of the part you want to rotate:
- Insert a section break at the point where the landscape section should begin, and another where it should end if the following content should return to portrait.
- Open File > Page setup or Format > Page orientation.
- Under Apply to, choose This section or This section forward, as appropriate.
- Choose Landscape, then click OK.
To rotate the entire document instead, choose Whole document under Apply to. Google also documents selecting text or an image, right-clicking it, and choosing Change page to landscape or Change page to portrait. These mixed-orientation instructions are for computer use; Google’s mobile page-setup instructions cover basic orientation, paper size, and color controls, not section-level orientation. Change page setup in the Google Docs mobile app
Android
- Open the document and tap Edit at the bottom right.
- Tap More at the top right, then Page setup.
- Choose Orientation, Paper size, or Page color, and make your change.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the document and tap More at the top right.
- Tap Page setup.
- Choose Orientation, Paper size, or Page color, and make your change.
Google’s mobile help says these page settings are unavailable in Pageless documents. To preview the document as pages, tap More > Print layout. Pages or Pageless: which format should you use?

Some elements, including headers, footers, and watermarks, are not visible in Pageless; they reappear if you switch back to Pages. Some features, including columns and page numbers, cannot be added in Pageless. On a computer, change the format through File > Page setup or the Format menu. If Orientation is missing
- On a computer, open File > Page setup and make sure Pages is selected at the top of the dialog.
- On a phone or tablet, check whether the document is Pageless; Google’s mobile instructions say page settings are unavailable in that format.
- If you want a continuous document rather than print-style pages, Pageless may be intentional. Switch to Pages only when you need page orientation, paper size, page color, or other page-based elements.
